Building a Winning "Team" at the TradeWinds
Posted May 2, 2011
ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. – From glow-in-the-dark volleyball tournaments to a “survivor-style” stay alive challenge, the TradeWinds Island Resorts on St. Pete Beach “serves up” the ultimate in unique group activities on a gorgeous stretch of pristine beach. Groups large and small are invited to roll up their sleeves, kick off their shoes and compete against the CEO in one of the many team-building activities created by the TradeWinds Action Zone.

“We have the ability to cater to small groups of 10 or large conferences of 1,000,” said Doug DeGroot, director of activities. “No matter what the activity or group size, the programs always succeed in bonding groups together and bringing out an incredible amount of creativity. It’s truly amazing what some groups come up with and how enthusiastic they are about their projects!”

Corporate competitors can “go for the gold” in the TradeWinds traditional Beach Olympics. The event begins with a warm-up cheer and stretch session followed by five or six events including an obstacle course, fire brigade relay, aqua blast, team jog, crazy balloon games and tug o war. Referees, opening ceremonies and five “silly awards” are all part of the festivities. Meeting attendees can capsize the CEO during a telling team-building project called Build Your Own Boat Regatta. Using minimal supplies provided by the resort, teams are required to design and build a human powered boat capable of racing the designated circuit. Each team names their boat, designates a captain and first mate, introduces their vessel and performs a team cheer.

The TradeWinds own version of Family Feud allows attendees to show their smarts and keep the crowd roaring with laughter. Guests can fulfill their dreams of being a contestant on a game show with the TradeWinds 1970’s style host who keeps the action going for two full hours of competition.

The team-building fun and excitement continues once the sun sets over the Gulf with the NightSpiker Volleyball Tournament. Team members can paint themselves or their superiors for “war” with special glow-in-the-dark paints. The beach volleyball court is illuminated with black lights and other special lighting to glow late into the evening. Additional Glo-Games available for play include 9-hole mini-golf, tennis, soccer and ping-pong. Beach volleyball tournaments can be designed in the day or night, specifically to fit any groups needs. The activities department is also happy to “tee off” the group by arranging a Golf Tournament on one of many courses located just minutes from the TradeWinds. Choices include par three, executive courses and championship par 72s.

Planners can also select from a variety of activities ranging from face painting and Hula Hoop contests to bingo and relay races in the Beach Party Kit. Additional TradeWinds activity programs include a caricature artist, henna tattoo artist, and hair braiding.

Those groups that only have a few minutes to put their “head in the game” have the opportunity to select from a wide variety of break out session activities including the Water Tower Challenge where teams have to construct a water tower to hold their “cities” water supply and B-I-N-G-O with not one, but eight special versions.

The casually elegant TradeWinds Island Resorts offers more than 80,000 square feet of meeting and function space, are located directly on the sugary white sands of the Gulf of Mexico and are easily accessible by automobile or airplane. The resorts offer access to two properties in one with limitless beachfront recreation, sumptuous dining and golf privileges at some of the area’s world-class courses.

TradeWinds Island Resorts Magnificent Island-Style Meetings
Posted March 1, 2010
A Meeting Paradise: Hosting more than 700 meetings and social functions annually, the TradeWinds Island Resorts – the TradeWinds Island Grand and TradeWinds Sandpiper Suites – can accommodate groups from 10 to 1,000. The TradeWinds provides business travelers access to 15 restaurants and lounges, limitless beachfront recreation and exceptional sporting activities. Guests at both resorts enjoy complete charging privileges at each individual property.

The Setting: Situated along sugary white sands on the island of St. Pete Beach, the TradeWinds Island Resorts offer the perfect surroundings for ease of learning, team building, brainstorming and creativity.

Going Green: The TradeWinds Island Resorts have both been designated as Two Palm Certified Green Lodges by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The properties were recognized for their efforts in conserving natural resources. The voluntary, non-regulatory Florida Green Lodging Program works with the lodging industry to reduce waste and minimize pollution.

Air Travel Access: Tampa International Airport (TPA) consistently ranks as one of the world’s top airports, offering nonstop air service to over 69 cities and easy connections to every major city in the world. TPA received the 2008 IATA Eagle Award for airports from the International Air Transport Association.

IATA is an international industry trade group representing 230 airlines, comprising 93 percent of the world’s scheduled international air traffic. The award is for outstanding performance in customer satisfaction, cost efficiency and continuous improvement. Tampa International Airport is once again named among the Top Ten U.S. Airports by the readers of Conde Nast Magazine. It is located 30 minutes from the resort, and offers extensive ground transportation, including most rental car companies, commercial taxi and shuttle companies.

St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport
Located just 25 minutes from the resort, the St. Petersburg-Clearwater airport is serviced by several different international and domestic airline carriers. Car rental, shuttle and taxi transfers are available.

Both airports offer multiple direct flights daily from major and secondary cities. The TradeWinds Island Resorts are an easy drive via the Interstate – it is the quickest beach exit from the Tampa International Airport.

Theme Parties and Team Building: From the Gasparilla Shipwreck party, based on the popular Tampa Bay festival, complete with costumed pirates, cigar rollers and water guns, to a beach cookout with NightSpiker beach volleyball and fireworks on the shore, the TradeWinds Island Resorts has the capability and the creativity to meet special requests for almost any group – large or small. Additional innovative themes include Everglades Party, Havana Nights, Casino Royale/Monte Carlo and Jurassic Adventure. Groups can also cruise to a nearby “deserted” island for a private party.

The full-service recreation staff specializes in coordinating unique, invigorating programs around coffee breaks and leisure time. Team-building activities such as Beach Olympics and “boat building” are friendly competitions, great for breaking down barriers and building camaraderie. Golf, tennis and fishing tournaments can also be customized for any group’s needs.

Service Team Approach: The tremendous group market success enjoyed by TradeWinds Island Resorts is due in part to the individualized attention given to meeting planners and attendees through separate sales, group reservations and convention services departments. Together, these departments expertly coordinate every detail, from arrival to departure, including all functions, activities and events associated with every group to achieve the overall experience desired by the meeting planner. A service assurance agreement is also included in the contract.

Business Services: Both TradeWinds Island Resorts have business centers that include copying, faxing and computer use. High-speed wireless Internet is available in guest rooms, meeting rooms, the lobby and in additional public areas. In addition, the in-house audio/visual service company and convention service managers are on-call 24 hours a day.

TradeWinds Island Grand Updates Guest Rooms
Posted January 12, 2010
Refurbished Rooms to Feature Flat Screen TV's; Classic West Indies Decor
The TradeWinds Island Grand Resort – a beachfront resort located directly on the Gulf of Mexico on St. Pete Beach, just 30 minutes from Tampa.

Guest rooms and suites at the TradeWinds Island Grand are currently undergoing a $10 million facelift. The interior renovation, which began in December, will be done in phases and therefore be restricted to a small portion of the 20 acre resort to avoid any disruption to guests. All beachfront accommodations including rooms, one-bedroom suites and penthouses in the 288-room Jacaranda building will be completed in early March 2010. Remaining Jacaranda building guestrooms are scheduled for renovation later in 2010. All 584 of the TradeWinds Island Grand’s rooms are expected to be updated and completed by late 2011. In addition, exterior walkway carpeting will be replaced with an upgraded, textured surface to give the corridors a more upscale look to match the guestroom changes.

The rooms will move away from the current casual Florida feel and reflect a more upscale look with custom-made dark wood furniture and décor reminiscent of a classic British West Indies plantation. New lighting and bed linens with new pillow shams, lightweight coverlets and the now popular bed scarves are included. In addition, the carpet is being replaced and new natural stone travertine will appear in lieu of floor tile. The rooms will also receive flat screen HD televisions and detailed and unique nature-themed artwork. The color palette throughout the rooms will reflect the classic feel of the tropics with cool sage greens and warm orange and gold tones, merging the personality of the rooms with the recent $2.5 million meeting space renovation that was completed at the end of 2008.

The first phase of the TradeWinds Island Grand guestroom renovation is scheduled for completion in March 2010.

Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast just 30 minutes from Tampa International Airport, the TradeWinds Island Resorts – the Island Grand and the Sandpiper – are located just steps from each other along a strand of beach directly on the Gulf of Mexico. The resorts offer access to two great properties in one with limitless beachfront recreation, 84,000 square feet of function space, sumptuous dining, fantastic family activities and programs and golf privileges at some of the area’s finest public and private clubs.
