WHALES, WONDERS, AND WYLAND AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, LAGUNA NIGUEL
Posted January 16, 2015
The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel is proud to join with renowned marine life artist Wyland for “Whales, Wonders, and Wyland.”
The collaboration includes an overnight experience, a display of more than twenty-five Wyland original paintings, limited editions, and sculptures throughout the resort, as well as an exclusive reception for guests to meet Wyland and enjoy a special multi-media retrospective of Wyland’s Whaling Wall public mural project. Wyland is also the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Festival of Whales, taking place in Dana Point the first two weekends in March.

Wonders of Wyland Reception
The Wonders of Wyland Reception will be held Friday, March 6, 2015. The evening will include film highlights from Wyland’s thirty-year campaign to create 100 life size marine life murals in more than 12 countries around the world. Spanning the sides of skyscrapers, sports arenas, and structures, these landmark public murals have captured the imagination of millions and helped inspire a new generation to become better stewards for our environment. The evening presentation will share the story of Wyland’s epic campaign, from its humble beginnings to the final, all-encompassing project for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Through original video footage and photographs, guests will get an up-close look at the murals and one man's dream to change the landscape of art - and to create a gentle reminder to communities around the world that everyone, everywhere can make a difference. The Wonders of Wyland Reception will also feature Wyland painting twelve original sumi brush paintings to be auctioned off that evening. Sumi brush paintings are done in traditional Chinese brush-style with black ink on paper. The reception is $125 per person, with $25 of the ticket price going to support the Wyland Foundation. Reservations are required for the reception.

Whales, Wonders, and Wyland
The “Whales, Wonders, and Wyland” overnight experience is offered nightly through April 30, 2015 and includes overnight accommodations, two tickets for a whale watching excursion with Dana Wharf, a special Wyland gift while on the whale watching cruise, an in-room Wyland amenity, a personal note from Wyland and resort fee. The experience starts at $620 per night.

Guests who attend the Wonders of Wyland reception and book the “Whales, Wonders, and Wyland” overnight package that evening will also receive a Wyland coffee table book.

The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel continues to redefine guest experiences by creating distinctive, unforgettable and epic memories. The resort is kicking off 2015 with 52 Bucket List experiences for guests to enjoy while visiting the oceanfront resort and Southern California and both of these Wyland experiences are on the list. One epic experience will be added to the #BucketList each week via the resort’s social media channels including Facebook and Twitter. Guests are invited to follow the Bucket List through #RCMemories #BucketList and are invited to share their Bucket List ideas.

Known as the Whale Capital of the West, scientists believe that Dana Point may serve as a reference landmark for whales along the Pacific Coast and is a famous gathering area for feeding. The area attracts not only marine mammals to Orange County, but marine biologists and whale lovers from around the world. From January through April, California Gray Whales embark on the longest migration of any mammal on the planet. They leave their nutrient rich feeding grounds in the cold Arctic, and follow the coastline to the calm, warm waters of Southern California and Baja where they mate and bear their young. This 12,000 mile migration brings much of the pod past Dana Point. The Gray Whale is a dark slate-gray color, but also has characteristic gray-white patterns caused by the accumulation of marine parasites on their skin. They typically measure 30 to 45 feet as adults and weigh about 22 to 35 tons. Gray Whales do not have a dorsal fin like other whales; instead they have a series of "knuckles" along the after portion of the back. Other whales including Fin, Minke, Humpback and False Killer Whales are occasionally seen in the waters off of Dana Point.

About Surfing
Dana Point has a surfing history to rival anywhere outside Hawaii. Hobie Alter opened the very first retail surf shop in Dana Point in 1954. Surfer Magazine began in Dana Point, and to this day, still calls it home. Dana Point was also once home to a very special wave. That wave broke at the Dana Point Cove and was known as the “Killer Dana.” The break got its name because it came out of deep water and broke close to the rocks which lined the beach. In the days before leashes, wipeouts were sure to bring at least a few dings - if not worse. Although the waves in Dana Point, especially at Salt Creek Beach, remain some of the best in Southern California, the “Killer Danas” were reduced when a breakwater was installed when the Dana Point Harbor was built in 1966.

Blue Whales
From May through November, Blue Whales congregate in Dana Point to feed on four to six tons of krill a day in our abundant waters. Blue Whales are the largest mammals ever to roam the earth. They are steel gray in color and are long and streamlined. Their dorsal fins are extremely small, and each whale has a unique fluke that is as wide as a wingspan on a private jet plane. Blue Whales are rorqual whales, a family of baleen whales with pleated throat grooves that expand when the animal takes in water while feeding. Blue Whales can be up to 100 feet long, weigh as much as 150 tons and have been found in every ocean of the world. They are solitary mammals, however they are occasionally seen feeding in loose groups where food is abundant.

Gray Whales
From January through April, California Gray Whales embark on the longest migration of any mammal on the planet. They leave their nutrient rich feeding grounds in the cold Arctic, and follow the coastline to the calm, warm waters of Southern California and Baja where they mate and bear their young. UNMASKING THE ARTIST AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, LAGUNA NIGUEL
Posted April 2, 2014
A Photo Exhibition by Artist Charley Akers
What started as a simple creative endeavor for Asheville, NC-artist Charley Akers has turned into a tribute to Festival of Arts artists with a photography exhibition at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel.

For the third consecutive year, the exhibit features a selection of Aker’s photographs, complemented by a piece of art by the artist depicted in the portrait. Aker’s unique black and white portraits capture the essence of each artist, while also highlighting their craft. The exhibit includes portraits of southern California artists Ron Azevedo, Marlo Bartels, Paul Bond, Antje Campbell, Russell Jacques, Susan Jarecky, Christopher Jefferies, Murray Kruger, Tom Swimm, Hannah Harris and Rachel Young, each of whom have also been selected to showcase their art at the 2014 Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. The exhibit will be on display from May 8 to August 30, 2014.

Each portrait is captured with a style that often has Akers compared to his greatest influence, Yousuf Karsh. The iconic images of many of the greats, such as Hemingway, Churchill and Einstein, were captured by Karsh and are still held up as the purest representation of these individuals. Akers follows suit in his remarkable ability to disarm the subject and catch a singular moment of who the artist is at their core. Step two for Akers is the integration of artist and art through technology, illuminating the passion and craft of the creator. After a 35-year corporate photography career, Akers’ enthusiasm and drive have allowed him to launch into this new artistic style with the eye of an expert and the heart of an artist.

“In any product or resort shoot I am given every element. What to shoot, where to shoot, when to shoot and how to shoot,” said Akers. “With these portraits, I hold the creative control which allows me the freedom to get to know my subjects and bring the essence of who they are into the camera lens for the world to see.”

“In addition to his obvious talent, work ethic and originality, Charley has a contagious personality,” said internationally recognized painter and sculptor Russell Jacques. “It is one of the best photos ever taken of me.”

For more than 15 years, The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel has been the official hotel partner of Pageant of the Masters and Festival of Arts. In addition to showcasing the incredible works of several of the festival artists, the resort makes the Pageant a first-class experience through packages that feature incredible seats and exclusive offerings. The Behind the Velvet Rope Experience features ocean view overnight accommodations on The Ritz-Carlton Club Level, two premium seat tickets to the Pageant, a guided docent tour of the Festival, a backstage tour of the Pageant for $1,475 per night. A CENTURY OF SALES EXPERIENCE CREATES UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE MEETINGS AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, LAGUNA NIGUEL
Posted August 21, 2012
A meeting, conference or event at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel is exciting, innovative, and rewarding for attendees. It is also a gratifying experience for the meeting planner because no detail is spared and no questions are left unanswered. This exceptional service delivery comes from a sales team that has more than a century of combined experience with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC.

From Leslie Peterson, Director of National Accounts who has been at the resort for nearly 14 years, to Catering Sales Manager Arkadiusz Kurowski who joined the resort a few months ago, the sales team inspires trust with each and every planner they work with. “It’s because of this experience, level of training and professionalism that planners are instilled with the utmost confidence that their program at our luxury resort will be seamless,” says Shannon Gilbert, Director of Sales. “Partnering with our meetings and special events managers also increases a planner’s confidence that no detail will be overlooked and their event will be a huge success. Our sales managers also feel that it is important to partner with their clients to reach a common goal and that being flexible and anticipating the planner’s needs are key ingredients to a successful program,” added Gilbert.

Holding a meeting at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel begins long before the meeting actually materializes. It’s in this pre-event stage that the sales managers have the opportunity to provide one-of-a-kind experiences for the planners. The resort had the privilege to host a site inspection for three meeting planners from a major financial institution who were considering the property an incentive program. During a brainstorming session, it was mentioned that the Academy Awards were being held that Sunday. Linking this idea to the client’s incentive program to “honor their Best of the Best,” it was decided to create an amenity themed around the Best Picture nominations hoping the combination would be a WOW for the clients. An amenity basket was created with small items representing the property that linked each movie nominee with reasons why the group should book their business at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. Also included in the baskets were the top ten reasons the oceanfront resort was the premiere location for their event. The welcome card stated, “The Oscars are Sunday honoring this year’s best of the best in film. Honor your Best of the Best by hosting your Incentive Awards at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel.” The planners were overwhelmed. The head planner commented it was the most unique and memorable amenity she has ever received in all of her years of planning. The sales efforts earned The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel the business.

Other priorities from the sales team include offering solutions and making sure the planners know that the ladies and gentlemen at the resort will move heaven and earth to make their program a success. “I offer solutions to a meeting planner’s needs by presenting the value of a Ritz-Carlton experience,” says Ralph Behrsin, Director of National Accounts.

Planners often comment on what a positive experience they had booking and hosting a meeting or event at the resort. Following a large meeting at the resort, Barry Caldwell, Director of Sales, Boeing Airplanes, said, “The meeting we had at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel was one of our best! Truly everything... beginning with the greeting at the front door, to the front desk, to the guest rooms, meetings rooms, the food and the Staff were absolutely “10’s. It was a customer experience almost as exhilarating as flying on a 787 Dreamliner...you keep wanting to come back.”

The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel offers nearly 30,000 square feet of meeting, conference and banquet function space. With eighteen unique meeting rooms, the resort can accommodate gatherings ranging in size from ten to 700. The Pacific Promenade is a stand-alone ballroom that offers guests sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and 5,400 square feet of unobstructed space. The resort’s indoor meeting space is complemented by nearly 54,000 square feet of incredible outdoor space featuring garden courtyards, pool terraces, and expansive lawns with memorable views of the Pacific Ocean.

The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel premiered as the first luxury resort along coastal Orange County in August 1984. THE RITZ-CARLTON, LAGUNA NIGUEL ENHANCES ECO-SAVVY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WITH NEW ORGANIC GARDEN
Posted March 2, 2011
As part of Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment, The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel has partnered with ValleyCrest Landscape Companies to create an Outdoor Learning Center. The Center highlights a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as a Green House and life-size game board.

“It was a natural fit to partner with ValleyCrest for our Outdoor Learning Center,” says Ritz-Carlton, General Manager Bruce Brainerd. “ValleyCrest shares our desire to become advocates of protecting and preserving the planet for future generations and, just like The Ritz-Carlton, part of their mission is to embrace environmental stewardship,” he added.

The organic garden features California pepper trees and fruits trees including lemon, orange, grapefruit, plum, peach, loquat and fig. Various lettuces, tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, squash, and watermelons are all planted in raised beds. Rosemary, thyme, basil, parsley, mint and chives are also highlighted in the garden. Native plants, such as Evergreen Currant, Douglas Iris, Chalk Dudleya, Coral Bells and California Wild Lilac, have been incorporated into the garden and grow beside plants that were used many years ago by the Native Americans that lived in the region. These native plants include White Sage, Cleveland Sage, California Sagebrush, Lemonade Sumac, Creeping Manzanita, Spiny Rush and Deergrass. As the fruits, vegetables and herbs mature, they will be incorporated into the menus in Raya, the resort’s new restaurant concept by Chef Richard Sandoval.

The greenhouse showcases the growth of native species of plants as well as organic, healthy vegetables that are used in the organic cooking activity, Ambassadors in the Kitchen. Participants discover that organic gardening can be easy and fun, and it yields produce that is the most local that you can get. The greenhouse also serves as a perfect example of how the “greenhouse effect” works, and how it relates to our global climate and the interconnections between human action and the preservation of our environment. Rain gutters on the Greenhouse collect moisture that is used to irrigate the garden and an underground cistern collects runoff that is used in the greenhouse and the garden. On the complimentary Garden Tour, guests have the opportunity to explore the garden and learn about the greenhouse.

The Outdoor Learning Center is incorporated into several of the Ambassadors of the Environment eco-excursions. Gardening Gurus allows guests to discover the real story about organic gardening, composting, and the wonderful world of plants. A Vegetation Vacation starts with a hike in the Dana Point Preserve where guests discover the native plants and animals of the Dana Point coastal region. Upon returning to the resort, guests enjoy a gardening experience in the organic garden. Ambassadors in the Kitchen offers a tour the organic garden where guests learn about the benefits of sustainable gardening and eating organic foods. Then they don their chef hat and learn about cooking with organic ingredients.

The Center’s life-size game board is a fun and interactive way to teach guests about sustainable living. The game is divided into nine sections – energy, water, biodiversity, food, waste, toxic waste, transportation, homes and buildings, and being an Ambassador of the Environment. Guests are the game pieces and they roll giant die to move forward. They read questions from the Sustainable Living cards and if they answer correctly, they advance in the game. At the conclusion of the game, participants discuss what they learned and talk about each section and how it relates to their life and sustainable living.

“ValleyCrest is proud to support efforts to protect and improve the environment through innovative organic gardens and sustainable landscape programs such as what The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel has created,” said Roger Zino, president of ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance, which has taken care of the property’s landscape needs since 1997. “These eco-conscious efforts showcase fun and relevant ways to educate guests and incorporate more sustainable practices into their travel experiences.”
