Top U.S. Beach and Island Adventures Await Guests at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne
Posted August 13, 2009
As Miami's only island destination, The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne offers myriad recreational options that take advantage of its oceanfront setting and natural beauty of neighboring parks. The pristine sands and turquoise waters of Crandon Beach have consistently been ranked among Dr. Stephen "Beach" Leatherman's America's Best Beaches, the only South Florida location to capture the 2008 honor. Just 300 feet offshore lay the world's largest underwater sea grass meadow and the tip of the world's third largest coral reef, which stretches through the Florida Keys to Dry Tortugas. Guests can get an up-close look at these environments and surrounding marine life through kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boating, Hobie cats and sail boats. They may also catch glimpses of sea turtles during nesting season March through October.

On land, Key Biscayne is home to the 500-acre Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, comprising of the southern third of the island. Here, visitors can tour the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse, the oldest in South Florida, and ascend the 109 step to the top for sweeping views from Coral Gables to South Beach. Adjacent to the lighthouse is a replica of the lighthouse keeper's 1825 cottage and cookhouse, now a mini-theater to provide visitors an introduction to the history of the landmark structure. Visitors can also fish, picnic or walk along the Key Biscayne Heritage Trail. For those that want a more to explore the island more extensively, bikes and red car buggies are available for rent at the resort.

On the Northern end of the island is Crandon Park and Marina, where through the concierge, guests can make arrangements for boating excursions including the Open Fishermen deep-sea fishing tours for up to eight people; boat tours around the Intracoastal, Bay and ocean for up to six people; and cabin cruisers for a more intimate tour through the Intracoastal, Bay and nearby Mangroves. For larger groups, the Great White catamaran can hold up to forty five people for an afternoon for a complete tour through Miami waters. Each of the boating excursions offers an optional detour to Monument Island or Pelican Island for picnic or barbeque lunch. Wave runners and sailboats are also available for rental.

THE RITZ-CARLTON SPA, KEY BISCAYNE FEATURES OCEAN-INSPIRED THERAPIES WELLNESS CLASSES & MEN'S MENU AT A TRUE SPA RETREAT
Posted August 13, 2009
Detoxifying salt water from the Atlantic, vitamins and minerals extracted from the sea and exfoliating elements of island sand combine to create one of South Florida's most renowned spa getaways at the oceanfront The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Key Biscayne. The Mobile Four Star, 20,000 square-foot spa haven is a destination within itself with new ocean-inspired therapies, a Men's Menu and signature packages offering a total body experience.

Tranquil shades of soft sand-colored hues, the scent of mango candles and a soothing water wall mark the entrance to the 21 treatment rooms, private ladies' and gentlemen's lounges, full service salon, ocean-view wellness center and relaxation solarium where luxurious extras include complimentary muffins, pastries, fresh fruits, teas, juices and elixirs presented at various times throughout the day. Champagne and red and white wines are offered in the salon. In addition, after each spa treatment, guests are offered a "Detox cocktail" of water infused with detoxifying ingredients.

The Spa offers more than 60 individual treatments and seasonal packages throughout the year. Signature therapies that harness the energy of the sea-meeting-sand include:

Sea Holistic
Combines sea elements with naturally healing medicinal herbs to relax the body and impart exquisitely silky skin. After algae oil and salt gently polish the skin, steamed and fragrant linen bundles filled with marine salt crystals and medicinal herbs - such as lavender, eucalyptus or lemongrass - deliver deep warmth throughout the massage. Specific movements taken from Thai massage techniques are combined with trigger points and stretching to unwind areas of tension and restore balance to the body. 75 minutes/$205

Organic Coconut Series
At the heart of Key Biscayne's beautiful ever-changing landscape is the coconut. The island was once home to the largest coconut plantation in the United States from 1908-1933, when more than 36,000 coconut palms swayed over the Northern two-thirds of the island. The Spa commemorates this historical designation with organic coconut-based therapies by Eminence that incorporate the many health and beauty benefits of this sweet smelling seed.

Signature Coco-Luscious Body Treatment
A combination of raw sugar cane granules and rich virgin coconut oils creates a natural exfoliation, while a mango pineapple cocoon wrap rich in enzymes helps dissolve dryness, fine lines and pigmentation. An antioxidant moisturizing body butter enriched with virgin coconut and grape seed oils is then applied to return firmness to the body and impart smooth, radiant skin. 60 minutes/$170

Tropical Coco-Luscious Facial
A gentle exfoliation comprised of the perfect skincare trifecta: pineapple enzymes work to refine skin tone, chamomile calms inflammation and an antioxidant booster of vitamins and green tea combat free radicals. The healing qualities of rich mango and virgin coconut oils then return deep lasting hydration and a tropical glow, all while the sweet scents whisk your senses to a tropical oasis. 50 minutes/$145

Tropical Coco-Luscious Manicure/Pedicure
Soak away your cares in a warm coconut milk-infused bath followed by a refining coconut sugar scrub. A purifying and hydrating mango pineapple enzyme wrap will ensue to help remove all traces of roughness from hands, feet and lower legs. Purifying and healing aloe then help soothe and alleviate the effects of UV damage, while an extra-rich tropical body butter ensures lasting hydration. Your nails are now ready for buffing and your choice of polish. Manicure, 50 minutes, $70/Pedicure, 60 minutes, $85

Oceanside Cabana Massage
Any massage can be transformed into the ultimate luxurious experience in the comfort of the oceanfront cabana with sounds of ocean waves lapping against the sand and balmy breezes to set the mood. 50 minutes and up/additional $40 to massage type selected

Key Biscayne Signature Body Package - Designed to rebalance, restore and revitalize, using seawater nutrients, plant essences and balms formulated with semiprecious gemstones and crystals to restore the body's vitality. This luxurious and exclusive treatment begins with a marine crystal-infused bath followed by a therapeutic body wrap, top-to-toe exfoliation and a decadent 42-Movement Minerale body massage. Two hours/ $375

The Legend package: In 1513, Ponce de Leon landed at Key Biscayne and searched for the elusive Fountain of Youth. The Spa honors this legend with an Age Zone Treatment that uses ingredients to impart unprecedented anti-aging and hydrating effects and a Vie Age Concept Exfoliating Massage, combining Lomi Lomi techniques, Lymph Drainage Massage, Shiatsu pressure points and African Reflexology, creating a "youthful" body experience. Two hours/$350

"For centuries, mineral rich elements from the sea have provided therapeutic healing benefits that detoxify and renew skin cells," said Trudy Miller, Spa Director at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne. "With the Atlantic Ocean just steps away from the spa, we are creating a rejuvenating experience that provides a true reflection of our tropical surroundings."

Personalized treatment regimens by Eminence, Phytomer, SkinCeuticals and Payot offer the ultimate in luxurious face and body skin care. Specialized products are available for home maintenance at the resort's Spa Boutique.

The spa's 21 treatment rooms include five facial rooms, a couples suite, oceanfront massage cabana, hydrotherapy suite and deluxe suite that contains an Aquarian tub, Vichy steam shower and massage treatment table.

Tennis magazine has recognized the stellar facility as one of "The 50 Greatest U.S. Tennis Resorts" and ranked it number three in the United States in "game arranging," a category that identifies the country's best tennis resorts for players who want to be matched with others at their skill level.

The Tennis Center features one hard court and 10 soft clay Hydrocourts for a total of eleven courts, which are lit at night. Designed by tennis legend and ESPN commentator Cliff Drysdale, its practical and innovative features include using stucco columns and soft nets as fencing, tall hedges as natural windscreens and underground irrigation systems to keep the clay courts moist throughout the day. Completing the facility is a Pro-shop with the latest lines of sporting goods.

Davison will also join Drysdale to head several "fantasy" clinics at guests' requests, entitled "Legends of Tennis," which has drawn the celebrated likes of Roy Emerson, Kathy Rinaldi and Marty Riessen.

Court fees are $15 per person per day and include preferred play time, a can of balls, soft drinks and towels. Daily shot clinics are $35 per person for one-and-a-half hours. Private lessons range from $95 per hour with one of the USPTA pros to $300 per hour with Resident Pro Cliff Drysdale. Racquet rentals are available at a $7 daily fee.

About Cliff Drysdale
Mr. Drysdale has an impressive resume as a tennis player, commentator, director and stadium designer. One of the first players to ever use a two-handed backhand, his 33 singles titles rank him among the top 50 players of all time. During the height of his playing days, he held the national singles championships of Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland and South Africa. Mr. Drysdale played a major role in the development of professional tennis by being elected to serve as the first president of the ATP in 1972-73, and was a player representative on the Men's Tennis Council from 1974-81. He also served four years on the National Executive Committee of the United States Tennis Association and six years on the National Board of the United States Professional Tennis Association.

About Owen Davison
Australian Owen Davidson is one of just 12 people to have won a personal Grand Slam. In fact, his 15-year career is highlighted by 12 titles.
His partnership with Leslie Turner and Billie Jean King produced the personal Grand Slam in 1967, as Davidson captured the Australian, French, U.S. Open and Wimbledon championships. "Davo" went on to win the Australian Open doubles with Ken Rosewall in 1972, and the U.S. Open doubles with John Newcombe in 1973. Davidson won the mixed doubles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open four times each. His four Wimbledon conquests captured him the title as male player with the most mixed doubles crowns at the All England Club. He is one of five men who have won the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament four times.

Davidson was a valued member of five championship Australian Davis Cup teams from 1962-1967. Although doubles is his forte, he also plays an impressive singles game. A career highlight came in 1966 at the Wimbledon semi-finals, when he narrowly lost a thrilling five-set match to, eventual champion, Manolo Santana.

The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne: Home to the Country's First and Only Tequilier
Posted August 13, 2009
The old salt and lime method of drinking tequila now means nada, thanks to the mastery of a well-versed Tequilier who works exclusively at Cantina Beach, Miami's only coastal Mexican-inspired restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne. Trained in the Tequila region of Mexico, the Tequilier is the authoritative voice on the 85 plus premium Agave tequilas offered at the restaurant, from white to golden and everything in between.

Mingling and musing with guests on the vast qualities of North America's first distilled drink, he makes suggestions on how to create the perfect margarita, recommends particular varieties to pair with culinary selections, provides guests with best tasting practices and shares the rich history of making tequila.

"Our goal is to make ladies and gentlemen comfortable with something they've never tried before, while also providing them with a memorable experience," said Derek Flint, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne. "Our tequilier is a huge success among our guests and locals who visit the restaurant."

A relaxed ambiance by day and romantic retreat by night, Cantina Beach is situated under a thatched-roof palapa built by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians with plush lounge chairs, a fire pit, tiki torches and bar overlooking the ocean. Menu highlights include tacos al pastor, shrimp quesadillas, fresh ceviches and tableside guacamole.

Complimentary tequila tastings are conducted at 6 p.m. daily with the Tequilier, who also provides fun facts about the three styles of tequila -Blanco, Reposado and Aejo- and how to pair them with the restaurant's incomparable cuisine.

Cantina Beach is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. For more information, please call (305) 365-4286.

The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne Renovates Guestrooms Modern Accents Reflect Oceanic Elegance
Posted August 13, 2009
Miami's only AAA Five Diamond resort has revealed a fresh look with enhancements to its 450 guestrooms designed to reflect the property's tropical ambiance and distinction as the island's only luxury resort. Sumptuous touches including mother-of-pearl wall coverings, colorful silk fabrics, Exotic Brazilian hardwood entryways and custom-designed furniture and lighting with jewel-like finials were designed and created by Kay Lang + Associates and Ernesto Cercas Architects to combine the island's rich history with modern grandeur. New technology includes plasma televisions outfitted with jack packs that allow guest to view input from their MP3 players, laptops and CD/DVD players on the TV display panel.

With a palette of warm sunset colors punctuated by cool water tones, the dcor mimics the movement of the ocean, as seen in the rippled patterns and multi-layered texture of fabrics and the wave-like curves of the custom-made furniture. Anchoring each guestroom is one king or two double beds topped with luxurious Frette bed linens and a tropical batik-inspired throw blanket, in which guests can envelop themselves on the adjacent chaise. Additional oceanic accents include oversized padded teak headboards, woven grass accessories, custom-made pendant sconces and lamps accented with glowing sea glass-like finials. Ceiling fans of wooden leaf-like blades create a natural airflow.

The bathroom is a haven of luxury with a striking mother-of-pearl wall covering offset by a brushed silver mirror. A complementing mirror of mother-of-pearl inlayed in a second wooden frame hangs over the spacious bathtub, ideal for a rose-petal or lemon-scent bubble bath drawn by the resort's Bath Butler.

Residences incorporate the new dcor with a slightly different color palette of blue and green tones. Residence kitchenettes are updated with granite countertops, iridescent glass back splashes and fine wood cabinetry. Living and breakfast area furnishings echo those in the guestrooms with plush cushioning and teak and bamboo accents.

The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne Blends Global Flavors for Stellar Ocean View Dining Experience
Posted August 13, 2009
The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne is a dining destination within itself, blending global flavors to create innovative "around the world" culinary experience with signature restaurant Cioppino, Dune Oceanfront Burger Lounge on the sand, oceanfront Cantina Beach and the sultry RUMBAR.

Cioppino
With flavors reminiscent of a quaint repast in Siena, a seafood feast on the island of Elba, or a superb dinner overlooking the Arno in Florence-Cioppino, the signature restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne features beautifully simple Tuscan cuisine in sensuous and stunning surroundings. Creamy burrata mozzarella and fresh fish such as salmon, tuna and branzino are flown in twice a week from various exotic locales, while myriad olive oils and aged Balsamic vinegars from Tuscany combine to create an authentic regional flavor in all dishes. Menu highlights include the restaurant's signature dish, Cioppino Mare e Fetunta, which features fresh branzino, mussels, calamari, shrimp and clams in a light tomato broth with Fregola Sarda accompanied by grilled crostini; Branzino alla Grillia, a Mediterranean sea bass with oven roasted lemon and panzanella salad; and the Riseria Merlano Risotta, an ever-changing flavorful dish combining daily special ingredients with Italy's first and only DOP rice. The resort's Sommelier oversees an extensive wine list showcasing fine, boutique and vintage wines, each the best within each category and region and the perfect complement to the cuisine.

Dune Oceanfront Burger Lounge
The newest dining addition to the resort, Dune Oceanfront Burger Lounges channels an afternoon in St. Tropez with its chic tranquil setting and mouthwatering menu. Guests can relax on plush lounges, cushioned beds, VIP cabanas or tables on the sand with unobstructed ocean views. The menu adds an international twist to an otherwise American concept with unique burger combinations, such as the Kobe Beef sliders, Ahi Tuna Burger and the Oregonzola burger, all complemented by the expansive beverage menu that includes Jeroboams of champagne and ros wines, specialty champagne cocktails and freezes, sangrias and beers from around the world. A dedicated Club level staff serves five complimentary culinary and beverage presentations daily. Brain Breaks' at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne Help Meeting Attendees Combat Fatigue
Posted July 13, 2009
As "keeping attendees interested and energized" is one of the top concerns cited by meeting planners, The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne launched a new Brain Break meeting package program, which incorporates nutritional, spiritual and physical elements and includes stair steppers and stationary bikes in the back of meeting rooms for attendees to get a quick burst of energy to carry them through the day.

Meeting participants start their morning with a sunrise, oceanfront Sun Salutation on the beach by a certified yoga instructor, who then returns to lead the group in gentle stretching and breathing to ward off post-lunch doldrums. To combat drowsiness, attendees can hop on a stationary bike or stepper, which are placed throughout the back of meeting rooms. Heavy carbs are replaced with healthy snacks including granola and energy bars, trail mix combinations, frozen yogurt and fruit, which are all accompanied by spring and vitamin waters and green teas to energize the mind and stimulate creativity.

"Retreats are extremely important to companies and associations, as they provide rare opportunities to gather the best minds across the organization into one place to strategize, train, and interact with fellow employees across the state, country or globe," say Derek Flint, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne. "We see the Brain Break package as a way to maximize participant engagement and productivity over this valuable time period, and ultimately contribute to a successful meeting."

The Brain Break meeting package is $18 per person and $150 per yoga instructor (recommend one instructor per 25 guests). Package add-ons including Wii Fit stations in meeting break areas and spa teasers in-between presentations are available for additional fees.
