The veteran chef arrives at the newly re-designed oceanfront restaurant
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (July 24, 2018) – The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay – the San Francisco Bay Area’s only oceanfront spa and golf resort – is pleased to announce the appointment of Alain Zhang as Chef of The Conservatory, the resort’s acclaimed restaurant featuring homegrown, handcrafted California cuisine. Zhang joins the award-winning resort from The Ritz-Carlton Sanya, Yalong Bay, where he served as Chef de Cuisine for Sand restaurant.

Zhang was raised in Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, China. Surrounded by cooking throughout his childhood – his mother’s exceptional cooking was famous around town and his aunt and uncle owned a restaurant in Ordos – Zhang knew at an early age that he wanted to pursue a career in the culinary arts.

After completing his general education and working in his aunt and uncle’s restaurant for a year, Zhang began his formal culinary career as a cook at the Portman at Inner Mongolia International Hotel, Hohhot before working his way up to Chef de Partie. For the next five years, Zhang continued honing his gastronomic skills before advancing to Sous Chef as part of the opening culinary team at Shangri-La Hotel Hohhot at Xin Café, the first restaurant in the capital to feature an open-theatre kitchen concept inviting diners to view the quality of ingredients that go into every dish.

Looking to expand his culinary scope internationally, Zhang joined the opening team of Quest Restaurant at Jumeirah Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi as Chef de Partie. During his year there, the fine-dining Pan Asian cuisine restaurant won the “Best Newcomer Restaurant Abu Dhabi” and “Best Chef” awards in 2011 and 2012 by What’s On Awards Abu Dhabi.

Shortly after, Zhang sought out new opportunities in his homeland with a continued focus on fresh regional ingredients, including serving as Chef de Cuisine at Le Meridien Qingdao where he crafted menus and oversaw all culinary outlets. In 2014, he accepted a Sous Chef position at Sand restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Sanya, Yalong Bay before being promoted to Chef de Cuisine.

Zhang looks forward to developing relationships with the local farmers and fishermen of the Half Moon Bay coast to source the finest produce and sustainable meat and seafood that is, and will continue to be, at the heart of The Conservatory menu.

In his spare time, Zhang loves to travel and visit parks and beaches. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife and two children.

The ultra-luxe treatment was created exclusively for the resort by Linda Ross, one of the most sought-after skincare specialists in Beverly Hills. Ms. Ross’ beauty products are handcrafted in micro-batches, using premium ingredients designed to transform skin back to a youthful glow.

The Rodeo Facial begins with a gentle cleansing foam, followed by a microdermabrasion scrub that reveals softer, luminescent skin and enhances absorption of beauty products. A protein and vitamin-rich skin tightening mask is then applied, stimulating blood flow to the surface of the skin and encouraging cell regeneration. Returning for its second year, The Global Cuisine Series at the iconic resort is an epicurean weekend retreat offered once a month exclusively to Ritz-Carlton Rewards, Marriott Rewards and SPG Rewards Members. The one-night package features an overnight stay in a Coastal View room, an intimate hands-on cooking class with the famed chef for up to 16 guests and is followed by a wine-paired luncheon where guests have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sit down with and get to know the guest chef.

Boasting a modern beach house aesthetic and a new vibrant menu curated by Executive Chef Xavier Salomon, the newly transformed restaurant combines fresh, homegrown cuisine and carefully crafted cocktails for an elevated, yet relaxed dining experience.

The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay unveils a new outdoor venue – the Mar Vista Lawn. Featuring 7,500 square feet of flexible open air space, the Mar Vista Lawn is adjacent to the Northern California resort’s private Ocean House and steps away from its main building.

A perfect alfresco space for cocktail receptions, themed dinners, wedding ceremonies and receptions, Mar Vista Lawn features a large grass space and an intimate seating area with Adirondack chairs and gas burning fire pits. Mar Vista Lawn makes for amazing team bonding experiences including wine workshops or cooking classes.

The wine workshops range from wine blending to aroma and color identification workshops. In the wine blending session, participants create their own blends in a sophisticated, yet fun atmosphere. Characteristics of each grape are discussed showcasing as what each grape brings to the blend, and successful winemaking techniques. Participants experiment with different proportions, making a unique blend to take home. In the color identification program, wines are served in black wine glasses and guests try and identify the color, while in the aroma identification session, resort guests are guided by a sommelier as they sharpen their identification skills and have fun learning to recognize common wine aromas. The cooking classes are a fun and tasty experience where guests work in small teams to create culinary masterpieces. From casual cooking to “Iron Chef”- style challenges are offered.

HALF MOON BAY, CALIF. – May 6, 2015 – Infusing a fresh, comfortable elegance into its interiors, The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay – the San Francisco Bay Area’s only luxury oceanfront resort – has completed an extensive refurbishment of its 261 guestrooms, Guest House rooms and Guest House luxury suites.

The redesign and renovation project includes the enhancement of all of the rooms and suites in the private Guest Houses and the standard guest rooms and one-bedroom suites in the resort’s main building.

Inspired by the cool tones of grey and blue from the neighboring Pacific Ocean, mixed with beachside accents such as pickled wood entry floors and driftwood inspired night stands, the enhanced guestrooms radiate a sense of a California coastal estate.

The journey begins in the guestroom corridors with ocean colors and muted orange hues that are found in a patterned carpet reminiscent of kelp mixed with a mid-century graphics. The spacious accommodations welcome guests with lined-in paneled walls painted in a crisp white finish. Plush draperies and rich carpeting surround the room in cool grey and blue muted hues. Improved technology is featured throughout the guestroom including multiple plugs for powering any device, and generous built-in storage encases the HDTV, laptop safe and hanging closet and drawers.

The end result is an atmosphere of understated, timeless elegance reflecting the tranquil beauty of the Pacific Ocean and Northern California coastline.

For an added level of luxury, The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge was also enhanced. Located on the fifth floor with stunning views on the Ocean Lawn and the Pacific coastline, a separation wall in the lounge was removed to open the space up and provide more direct views of the ocean. The feature fireplace wall had an artistic treatment of etched glass added to allow for increased visibility and impact. Unique lighting and more tones of grey and blue reminiscent of the ocean waves create a relaxed atmosphere. Half Moon Bay, Calif. – March 2, 2015 – A new workout program, SURFSET, launches this summer at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. Guests staying at the coastal resort, located just south of Mavericks, the famous surf spot where waves can crest at more than 25 feet and top out at 80 feet during the winter months, can enjoy the physical benefits of surfing without battling big waves.

SURFSET is all about getting away from the traditional static workout and challenging the body in new ways. Every exercise on the SURFSET board is designed to engage the core and stabilizer muscles and shock the system to create real change inside and out, giving a lean surfer look to the body. Paddling a surfboard builds shoulder definition, strengthens the lower back muscles and increases cardiovascular fitness. Duck-diving through waves builds arm strength. The pop-up maneuver engages the core and pectoral muscles and helps build explosive power. The process of standing and riding a wave increases leg strength, flexibility and engages all of the postural muscles.

SURFSET is offered to resort guests every Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The class is presented outside on the bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, creating even more of a surf-style experience. Participation in the group class is included in the daily resort fee and private sessions are available for $130 per hour.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers a lavish setting to indulge in relaxation and rejuvenation. The Spa features 16 treatment rooms, including two couples rooms and three facial rooms, as well as a co-ed Roman mineral bath. Guests can enjoy signature face and body treatments, including the Pumpkin Body Peel, inspired by Half Moon Bay’s location in the ‘Pumpkin Capital of the World.’
