The hotel is great. Historic hotel in downtown Portland, close to lots of restaurants and shops. The only negative thing I would comment on is that one or two of the conference staff were pretty grumpy. But, that was just one or two. Most of the staff was great.

Outstanding service the staff provided me in hosting the Antique Toy Club of America convention (May 2nd - May 6th 2012). The ATCA members were impressed with the charm of the hotel and loved the locations in the heart of downtown Portland. I received many compliments on the choice of the hotel.
All of our functions at the Hotel went smoothly. Service and attention for the Wednesday evening reception were truly outstanding. The quality of the hors doeuvres was excellent. Sheila did a good job in advising me and telling me about past convention favorites.
The banquet dinners also went quite smoothly and the folks enjoyed the meals. The staff was great in helping us set up the banquet room to meet our needs and adjusted it well to a last minute change.
Mike Roland was of great help in setting up and negotiating a favorable rate for the buses. Blue Star did a very good job for us with comfortable clean buses and good drivers at a competitive price.
I would recommend The Benson Hotel for anyone planning a convention in Portland. I'm glad that I chose this hotel.

“While this is a milestone for The Benson Hotel, it’s our valued guests and the Portland community who have made the past century so legendary,” said Ron Gladney, General Manager of The Benson. “We’re proud to be one of Portland’s treasured icons and look forward to continuing the tradition of providing impeccable service and exquisite accommodations for the next 100 years.”
Simon Benson, a Portland lumber baron and philanthropist, fulfilled his dream of building a world-class hotel in Portland, with what is now The Benson Hotel. Under his vision and direction, the hotel opened March 4, 1913 as the New Oregon Hotel, an "annex" to the Oregon Hotel. In fact, heavy doors engraved with "OH" can still be found in the hotel. Always a visionary, Simon Benson equipped The Benson Hotel with the latest innovations of the day, including automatic door switches, circulating ice water and electric lights in the guestroom closets. Now, with its extinct Circassian walnut walls and columns, classical coffered ceiling, exquisite Austrian crystal chandeliers and cast-iron railing along a sweeping Italian marble staircase, the property exudes the unique and exotic glamour of another era.
The Benson Hotel offers more than 18,000 square feet of event space, from the executive style Regency Boardroom, to the elegantly appointed Crystal Ballroom and opulent Mayfair Ballroom. It’s no wonder it has been a favorite of heads of state, key business leaders and blushing brides for the last century – decades of memorable experiences have been created at this historic hotel – a tradition that Coast Hotels will strive to uphold for generations to come.

The Benson's Historical Facts
Posted August 16, 2013
Simon Benson, a Portland lumber baron and philanthropist, fulfilled his dream of building a world-class hotel in Portland, with what is now The Benson Hotel. Under his vision and direction, the hotel opened March 4, 1913 as the New Oregon Hotel, an "annex" to the Oregon Hotel.
Always a visionary, Simon Benson equipped The Benson Hotel with the latest innovations of the day, including automatic door switches, circulating ice water and electric lights in the guestroom closets.
With its now-extinct Circassian walnut columns, classical coffered ceiling, exquisite Austrian crystal chandeliers and cast-iron railing along a sweeping Italian marble staircase, the property exudes the unique and exotic glamour of another era.
When it first opened, guests of the hotel were greeted each morning with a complimentary cup of hot clam nectar - a tradition that has since been replaced with a fresh cup of coffee.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the exterior, the magnificent, 50-foot glass and steel marquee above the hotel’s main entrance, collapsed in 1937 under the weight of the snow from one of Portland’s heaviest blizzards to date. A similar but much sturdier model now stands in its place.
After a major renovation in 1991, celebrating the 140th anniversary of Simon Benson’s birth, September 9 was declared “Simon Benson Day” by former Mayor Bud Clark, and the week declared “Simon Benson Week” by former Governor Barbara Roberts.
In addition to the magnificent Benson Hotel, Simon Benson provided Portland with 20 beautiful bronze drinking fountains fondly known as Benson Bubblers.
Every seated president since William H. Taft has stayed at The Benson Hotel, as well as many notable celebrities, sports stars and music legends.
