OD The Sea Turtle Makes a Splash at Shark Reef Aquarium
Posted October 7, 2013
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 7, 2013) – Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay welcomes OD the sea turtle, its newest family member, following a cross-country journey to Las Vegas that grabbed heartstrings and headlines nationwide. After a standard quarantine period, the estimated 50-year-old, 320-pound rescued sea turtle was officially put on display in the 1.3-million gallon Shipwreck Exhibit at Shark Reef Aquarium this morning.

“Shark Reef Aquarium guests can visit OD while learning about the turtle’s wild habitat and the impacts humans have on endangered green sea turtles,” said Adrienne Rowland, director of Shark Reef Aquarium. “We are honored to offer OD a permanent home and are committed to creating an enriching environment for his continued health.”

OD was first found in 1999 near Atlantic Beach, North Carolina with a lung infection. After recovering, he was tagged and released back into the ocean. In 2008, the tagged turtle was found floating near French Reef in the Florida Keys where he was treated at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital. Due to a collapsed lung, OD was unable to be rereleased and needed a permanent home.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay offered OD a home inside the Shipwreck Exhibit where he joined two additional green sea turtles and 22 other species including sharks, rays, fish and more. OD flew from the Florida Keys to Las Vegas courtesy of FedEx on July 25. Upon arrival at Shark Reef Aquarium, OD was taken to the dedicated animal quarantine facility, a standard industry procedure for new animals.

Jack Jewell, Shark Reef Aquarium’s general curator said, “OD’s well-being came first. The quarantine process ensured that he acclimated to his new home. He was under the care of our aquarist and veterinary teams who prepared him for a long future at Shark Reef Aquarium.”

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is among the most prestigious animal facilities in the world and is the first and only Nevada institution accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the most respected industry organization in the world. More than 2,000 animals are displayed at Shark Reef Aquarium, featuring 100 species, including 15 species of sharks. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. King of Pop tribute at Mandalay Bay
Posted August 27, 2013
Cirque du Soleil recently premiered "Michael Jackson One" in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

"One" is different from "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour," a traveling arena show staged in the style of a rock concert. Both performances are collaborations between Cirque du Soleil and the estate of Michael Jackson.

"One" is both a celebration of and tribute to the "King of Pop" with several acrobatic acts and dance numbers set to the musician's biggest hits, including "Beat It," "Black or White," "Thriller" and "Billy Jean."

The show bounces between Jackson's upbeat hits and ballads.

Cirque's accompanying acts feature slack lines, aerial artists, pole dancers and acrobats that perform from harnesses high above the audience.

The show's choreography plays extensively with shadows and light, and, at one point in the show, Jackson appears as a 3-D hologram on the stage, performing with the dancers.

Performances of "One" are currently Saturdays to Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Starting Sept. 3, performances are Saturdays to Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. There are no performances on Thursdays and Fridays.
Ticket prices start at $69; tickets can be purchased by calling (877) 632-7400 or (800) 745-3000, online at www.cirquedusoleil.com/mjone or www.mandalaybay.com or at any MGM Resorts International box office.

Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay in Midst of Major Facelift, its First in 14 Years
Posted January 21, 2013
By Ron Sylvester, Las Vegas SunMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News
Jan. 21, 2013--By most measures, Mandalay Bay had a banner year in 2012.

It sold out its convention center. The Shark Reef aquarium set an attendance record with 900,000 visitors. Carlos Santana signed a residency at the House of Blues.

That wasn't good enough.

Owner MGM Resorts International embarked on a massive renovation of the 3,000-room resort, the first since it opened in 1999. Construction began late last year and is expected to be completed by summer.

"I've got more construction walls than I have real walls," Mandalay Bay President Chuck Bowling said.

Many of the resort's original venues haven't changed in 14 years.

A second phase of construction, slated to start this summer, will rebrand The Hotel as the Delano Las Vegas, with a projected 2014 opening date. MGM officials would not disclose the cost of the projects.

Bowling recently sat down with VEGAS INC to discuss the changes.

Why embark on such an ambitious project now?

Coming out of this recession, the biggest question was: What does Mandalay Bay stand for, and how are we going to separate ourselves from the competition?

We have to create our own demand.

As we go back to redefining the resort experience, we knew there was a couple of elements we weren't pristine at. There were some shortfalls, so we were able to reinvest in it.

What did you think was lacking?

We have a great entertainment footprint. We have the events center. We have the beach and our concerts, where you can sit out in your shorts under the stars and listen to great music. We have the House of Blues. But we didn't have that A-list show. One of the things that frustrated all of us was seeing people catch cabs to go to another show somewhere else in town.

So we were fortunate to create the partnership with Cirque du Soleil and the Michael Jackson estate. On May 23, we're going to open what we hope is one of the most amazing shows (a full-time-residency production dedicated to the King of Pop), not only in Las Vegas, but around the world. We think that's really going to cement our entertainment.

The other long line getting out of here was going to find great nightlife. We did not have that. Many years ago, Mandalay Bay had Rumjungle, but that closed.

We went out on a search and came to an agreement with the Light Group, one of the leaders in nightlife. They partnered with Cirque du Soleil, and in March, we're going to open Light (Cirque's first standalone nightclub, which will feature acrobatic performers.) You're going to have this experience that is above you and around you. It's going to be very different.

What about the hotel rooms?

We have three hotels (Mandalay Bay, The Hotel and the Four Seasons). Some of the amenities at the Four Seasons weren't up to snuff, so we did this amazing renovation. That was finished last month.

Another thing it didn't have was a great lobby-lounge experience. We're in the process of opening a lobby-lounge this spring where locals and power brokers can come. It will be indoor/outdoor with fire pits, like you'd find at Red Rock or Green Valley Ranch. That's going to really cement our five-star level.

We also have The Hotel, which has a very high occupancy rate. But I had always referred to The Hotel as the Abbott and Costello brand: What hotel are you staying at? The Hotel. What hotel? The Hotel!

We partnered with the Morgans Hotel Group, which has one of the great brands in the Delano. It's very popular in South America, which is one of our fastest growing markets. It will open in the first quarter of next year.

(No changes are planned for the rooms at Mandalay Bay.)

Are you renovating the restaurants and casino?

We've worked with the Light Group on several new restaurant concepts.

We've got a great new Japanese restaurant. Chef Akira Back, from Yellowtail, will design the menu. We're still working on the name, but that will open in April.

Where Red, White and Blue was, the Light Group is going to open Citizen's Kitchen and Bar, a casual breakfast, lunch and dinner bar and bistro. They also went into Red Square, which was popular, and remade the menu and vodka locker.

We are also planning to redo Mizuya, and we are redoing Shanghai Lilly. We're still working on designs for those right now.

The casino hadn't been touched since the day we opened. We're completely renovating it, with new carpet, chairs and music.

Then we have all these other things going on behind the scenes. We also are partnering with Light to bring in a day club at the South Lagoon pool that will open this summer. We've got a new food court coming in this summer with more branded names.

Things have been happening so fast, our plans are still coming together. We think it will be the most talked-about resort in Las Vegas.

How do operate with all the construction?

In most hotels, you close one restaurant, and that's all you've got. Even though I took out three restaurants at once, I still have 17 more to offer.

People walk up to the construction walls and see Light, Cirque and Michael Jackson. We want them to say, 'Hey, I've got to come back.' From a marketing standpoint, we want to say, "Thanks for staying with us, but come back in June and you won't believe it."

The Bellagio and MGM Grand, other MGM Resorts International properties, underwent major renovations recently, too. What's the strategy? Why so many upgrades?

Our company was in the best shape going into the recession. We invested minimally during the recession, and that left us a good position to come out of it strong. Now we're investing more back into our properties.

The beauty of our company is all the properties have their own niche. Each of us have our own market position.

Are the renovations a sign of confidence that the economy has rebounded?

Certainly, the economy is getting better. But we've got a long way to go.

The interest in Las Vegas isn't waning. We were knocking on the door of 40 million visitors this year. There's a huge opportunity for international tourism that's continuing to grow.

That's why this the right time. As Las Vegas continues to recover, we want MGM and Mandalay Bay to be positioned to get their fair share of the business. We think these investments will make sure we attract people here for the first time and give us the best opportunity to bring back people who haven't seen us in a while.

The main thing is, once we get them here, give them no reason to go anywhere else. Whatever experience you want to do, you can find all under one roof.

How did Mandalay Bay stay competitive during the downturn?

We knew what business we were in. We've got a resort built around the convention business. We try to stay focused on that.

It was tough during the early part of the Obama administration because people said, "I can't hold my meetings in Las Vegas. I can't sell that boondoggle."

We had to remind them that we host some of the most prestigious corporate licensing in the world. We host some of the top Fortune 100 meetings, as well. We use conventions to fill mid-week and still create that tourist or vacation destination on the weekend.
Four MGM Resorts International Properties Awarded Highest Green Key Meetings Rating
Posted November 14, 2012
Elite recognition in sustainable hotel operations
LAS VEGAS - Nov. 14, 2012 - Green Key Global, the largest international certification body evaluating sustainable hotel operations, has awarded the prestigious “5 Green Keys" rating to four MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) properties for its Green Key Meetings Program, including Bellagio Resort & Casino, ARIA Resort & Casino, Mandalay Bay Resort and MGM Grand Las Vegas. The four MGM resorts are the first in the United States to receive "5 Green Keys" for meetings, and among an elite group of only six total in North America.

MGM Resorts remains one of the most productive meeting and convention destinations in the world, offering award-wining experiences throughout its three million square feet of meeting and convention space. In addition, each of the 11 MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas as well as Reno and in Tunica and Biloxi, Mississippi and in Detroit, Michigan has taken substantial steps in their commitment to sustainability.

“Green Advantage is MGM Resorts International’s platform to ensure that environmentally-conscious decisions are at the forefront of our business operations and facilities. We are pleased to have earned the five-key distinction from Green Key Global, validating the significant efforts of our team to build a world class green meeting program,” said Cindy Ortega, Senior Vice President & Chief Sustainability Officer.

The designation of 5 Keys is awarded to hotels that exemplify the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility in relation to their meetings and convention facilities and practices.

“Now, more than ever, the Meeting Planner community is seeking innovative, sustainable solutions when hosting their events,” said Michael Dominguez, Senior Vice President of Sales for MGM Resorts International. “As this is an integral part of the meeting planner organization's objectives, we are extremely proud to be a solution provider meeting environmental expectations while still providing world-class, award-winning service,” Dominguez added.

Green Key Meetings is a comprehensive assessment tool for eco-friendly resorts and hotels that hold meetings of any size. It is designed to provide Travel, Meeting and Conference Planners with a sense of a hotel’s level of commitment to environment issues. Overall, the Green Key Eco-Rating Program has more than 2,850 member hotels and is the foremost “green” ranking and audit program in North America.

“As the first U.S. chain to introduce the Green Key Meetings Program to its portfolio, MGM Resorts has demonstrated that practicing environmental stewardship need not affect the quality of an event but can, in fact, enhance its success,” said Tony Pollard, Managing Director of Green Key Global. “That these four Las Vegas properties have all achieved the highest rating is a testament to their dedication to sustainability within all aspects of their operations.”

Green Key Meetings ranks venues on a level of 1 to 5 keys, with 5 being the highest ranking. Keys are awarded based on how properties perform in six conference and meeting areas: Core Areas (carbon, energy, water, waste, air quality), Communication (information, training), Activities (purchasing, auditing, community), People (health), Exhibitions, and Audio/Visual. The Green Key Meetings properties and rankings are listed at http://www.greenkeyglobal.com/greenkeymeetings.asp.

MGM Resorts’ approach to sustainability focuses on five core areas - natural resources conservation, sustainable construction and renovation, waste management, sustainable supply chain and education and communication. This strategic framework of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainability forms the company's sustainability platform, called Green Advantage. Green Advantage is fundamentally changing the way MGM Resorts, its properties and its 62,000 employees do business.

The Meeting and Convention spaces across MGM Resorts are extending the level of environmental commitment through substantial initiatives for implementing sustainable features. By example, meeting spaces are retrofitted with light sensors and energy efficient lighting and custom programs to deactivate heating, ventilation and air conditioning while spaces are not in use. Comprehensive recycling programs also divert 37.9 percent of all materials from landfills each year. Resorts also offer specialty menus featuring wide selections of organic, sustainable and Fair Trade products as well as additional options for meetings to reduce water consumption.
In 2011, MGM Resorts International was awarded 12 Green Key Hotel rankings for designation of green business operations. At the core of CityCenter, ARIA Resort & Casino was awarded LEED Gold certification for sustainable design and construction from the U.S. Green Building council.

We all share in our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Brian Robison, Vice President & General Manager of The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. “To have the first public electric car charging station on the Strip is an honor for us and a convenience for our like-minded customers. We hope they get a real ‘charge’ out of shopping with us.”

To take advantage of this new amenity, drivers simply pull into one of the two specially designated parking spaces reserved exclusively for personal electric vehicles and plug into the easy-to-use PEP Station to charge their vehicle. Each station has a touch-screen interface that guides users through steps to safely charge their electric vehicle.

Two celebrities of the sustainability world were on hand to mark the occasion and assist with a debut of the charging facility.

-Chef Rick Moonen, best-selling author and one of the world’s leading advocates for the use of sustainable seafood in the food industry

-The Nissan LEAF, one of the most sought-after vehicles on the road today and, according to USA Today, the top-selling electric vehicle in the U.S. for the first six months of 2011

“I couldn’t be more proud that Mandalay Place is first with this forward-thinking program,” said Chef Moonen. “Someone has to take the leadership role and I’m happy MGM Resorts is willing to move toward a better way of doing things.”

Chef Moonen, known for his appearances on national television programs like Bravo’s “Top Chef,” also operates the two rm seafood restaurants inside The Shoppes at Mandalay Place.

MGM Resorts energy experts say this is an important first step that reflects the Company’s continued commitment to environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry.

“Consumer demand for this type of equipment is just in its earliest stages, but like anything new, its growth must be fostered by those who believe in it most,” said Cindy Ortega, MGM Resorts Sr. Vice President of Energy and Environmental Services. “Now is the most important time for companies like MGM Resorts to show our support, so others - consumers, car manufacturers and rental car agencies - feel comfortable enough to enter this important emerging market.”

MANDALAY BAY BECOMES ONE OF ONLY SIX US RESORTS TO EARN HIGHEST RATING FROM GREEN KEY GLOBAL ECO-RATING PROGRAM
Posted November 17, 2010
MGM Resorts International Continues Environmental Leadership in Hospitality Industry

LAS VEGAS - November 17, 2010 - MGM Resorts International, a global leader in bringing sustainability to the hospitality industry, announced today that the Green Key Global Eco-Rating Program elevated Mandalay Bay Resort to its highest, Five Key rating. Mandalay Bay joins only six other US resorts to achieve this honor.

Designed specifically for hotel operations, the Green Key Eco-Rating Program is a comprehensive environmental audit and is the first of its kind to rank, certify and inspect hotels and resorts in North America based on their commitment to sustainable "green" operations.

Mandalay Bay's sustainability status was raised by Green Key following the implementation of new green practices into the resort's internal sustainability program.

The recognition of the program's highest award now gives MGM Resorts International three of the six properties in the United States to have received five keys under the program, which evaluates hotels based on their commitment to sustainable operations. ARIA and Vdara at CityCenter are the other MGM Resorts properties to have received the recognition.

"Achieving leadership in environmental responsibility is about maintaining a commitment to continuous improvement in our every day operations," said Chuck Bowling, President and COO of Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. "While receiving Four Keys in July was a significant honor, we were not satisfied and knew our team at Mandalay Bay was capable of meeting the standards for Five Key recognition. We met these standards by bolstering our commitment to transparency in our overall operations, gaining better insight into our sustainable supply chain, engaging employees, and increasing guest outreach and education. Our sustainability program has fulfilled one of its goals, and now it is time to continue building on this terrific achievement as focus on the next set of goals and priorities for 2011."

Some of the new features of the Mandalay Bay sustainability effort include incentivizing employees for their environmental innovation through awards and recognitions, including suppliers' environmental policies, into the process of making purchasing decisions, providing more in-room information for guests about the property's environmental goals and performance, and putting into place new procedures to reduce energy usage in Housekeeping operations.

MGM Resorts International reported in 2009 that Mandalay Bay's electricity consumption was reduced by 4.9% from 2008 levels, saw a 51.3% decrease in its natural gas bill compared to 2008 spending, lowered water consumption by 4.7% between 2008 and 2009, and reduced property-wide waste by 18.7%
"The team at Mandalay Bay proactively sought to identify additional opportunities to make its operations more environmentally friendly," said Cindy Ortega, Senior Vice President of the Energy and Environmental Services Division at MGM Resorts International. "Having this type of leadership in place is a real game changer for us. In all of our efforts, our properties focus on five key pillars of sustainability - energy and water conservation, green building, recycling and waste management, sustainable supply chain management, and outreach and education. This enables us to focus on consistently setting a new standard of sustainability in the hospitality industry while providing our guests with the same, high-quality experience they have come to expect from us. Achieving Five Keys is a significant accomplishment for Mandalay Bay and we are very proud of our Green Wave team members and their commitment to environmental responsibility."

Other MGM Resorts International properties also submitted Green Key evaluations. Bellagio, Excalibur, Luxor, MGM Grand Las Vegas, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York and MGM Grand Detroit all received Four Keys. Circus Circus Las Vegas earned Three Keys.

The latest recognition of Mandalay Bay is just one of many that the Company and its properties have received this year for their sustainability efforts. It recently received recognition convention industry honors from Gold Platter and Gold Key, and in October, Newsweek named MGM Resorts International to its 2010 Green Rankings list as the highest-rated company in the gaming hospitality space. During the same month, Travel + Leisure honored the Company with one of its Global Vision Awards for its leadership in harnessing travel to positively impact the world, as demonstrated by CityCenter, which, at 18 million square feet and, is the world's largest sustainable mixed-use development. In 2009, CityCenter opened as the nation's largest green development, earning six LEED Gold Certifications from the US Green Building Council.

MGM Resorts International Named As Recipient Of 2010 Travel + Leisure Global Vision Award

MGM RESORTS INTERNATIONAL NAMED AS RECIPIENT OF
2010 TRAVEL + LEISURE GLOBAL VISION AWARD

Prestigious Award Recognizes CityCenter
for Pioneering Achievements and Contributions
to Improve the World Through Sustainable Travel

LAS VEGAS - November 11, 2010 - MGM Resorts International, a global leader in bringing sustainability to the hospitality industry, announced today that Travel + Leisure named the Company as a recipient of its 2010 Global Vision Award for the contributions CityCenter is making to improving the world through travel. CityCenter garnered six LEED Gold Certifications, and at 18 million square feet, is the largest environmentally sustainable, mixed-use construction development in the world.

"We are extremely proud of this award and honored that Travel + Leisure has recognized the quality and leadership that MGM Resorts International represents when it comes to environmental sustainability," said Cindy Ortega, Senior Vice President of the Energy and Environmental Services Division at MGM Resorts International. "CityCenter is a perfect example of how we are driving a new paradigm of sustainability in Las Vegas and the hospitality industry in general, and we remain committed to improving these efforts at all of our properties each and every day. Most importantly, this award is a true testament to the talent of our employees who are personally driving our environmental responsibility vision forward."

The 2010 Global Vision Award is one of several impressive industry awards that the Company has received for its sustainability efforts. Earlier this month, Newsweek named MGM Resorts International to its annual Green Rankings list as the highest-rated company in the gaming and casino space. In July of this year, the Green Key Global Eco-Rating Program recognized 12 MGM Resorts properties for their exceptional efforts in "greening" their business operations. This includes ARIA Resort & Casino, Vdara Hotel & Spa and Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, which are three of only four properties in the United States to have received 5 Keys, the highest honor of the Eco-Rating Program.

Travel + Leisure's annual Global Vision Awards honor the companies and organizations that are harnessing travel to positively impact our world. According to the 2010 Global Vision Awards, MGM Resorts was honored because, even though Las Vegas may seem like an unlikely paragon of sustainability, CityCenter is anything but conventional. This leadership is reflected in CityCenter's cutting-edge green-building techniques and how it is giving classic Vegas luxuries a new twist. But the sheer scale of CityCenter's accomplishments is what is most notable. The development's efficiency initiatives alone save an estimated 94 million kWh of energy and 50 million gallons of water each year, making it a clear leader in improving the world through sustainable travel.

The winners of the Global Vision Awards were chosen by an esteemed panel of seven judges, including Nobel-prize winning economist Dr. Joseph Stiglitz; model, designer, and goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organization Liya Kebede; and Oscar-winning documentarian (The Cove) Louie Psihoyos. The winners are recognized in five categories-conservation, sustainability, preservation, development, and leadership-and represent the latest and best examples of the power of travel as an engine of positive change.
