Austin walks away from weird with the opening of Hotel Van Zandt
Posted June 25, 2015
Austin walks away from weird
This October, Austin will have their first Kimpton Hotel and Restaurant, a high quality luxury hotel chain without a hint of the quirky weirdness this Texas capitol is known for. Situated on Lady Bird Lake, Hotel Van Zandt and Geraldine’s -- led by Executive Chef Frank Mnuk of the famous Uchi Restaurants -- pays homage to the history and culture of its Rainey Street home ... so maybe their will be something weird there after all!

Chef Mnuk’s menu will offer contemporary Austin fare inspired by the local culture such as Crispy BBQ Pork Ribs with pickled watermelon salad and Green Garlic Monkey Bread with burrata. Another unique feature of the menu is the “Feasts.” With an advance reservation, diners can order a family-style dining experience with seasonal dishes such as Braised Beef Osso Bucco, Whole Roasted Porchetta, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Beef Rib Roast.

Plus with Geraldine’s location on the fourth floor of the hotel, the restaurant serves as the perfect oasis from the bustle of the city, with incredible views of Lady Bird Lake and live music each evening.

How Austin's new Hotel Van Zandt hopes to hit the high notes this summer

Austin's new Hotel Van Zandt
For the moment, the JW Marriott in downtown Austin is the latest cool spot. The bars — especially the outside bar at Corner, the hotel’s American bistro — are the place to see and be seen.

But there’s more competition on the horizon.

Just a hunch, but Hotel Van Zandt’s opening in late July will probably draw the crowds given the celebrity riff in its name and its location in the popular Rainey Street District that's filled with hot nightspots.

Kimpton Hotels will operate the hotel and that company has a reputation for design, innovation and appealing food and beverage options.

I met with the new General Manager Joe Pagone to talk about his career and plans for making Hotel Van Zandt a favorite for locals and tourists, alike. An exclusive interview with him appears in Austin Business Journal's May 22 weekly print and digital edition.

Pagone also shared the latest renderings of the 319-room hotel, which will have two restaurants and a pool deck overlooking Lady Bird Lake. Click the photo on this page to see how noted New York designer Mark Zeff envisions the space.
