The Grand Del Mar Joins The Climate Registry
Posted March 4, 2014
San Diego Luxury Resort Continues Its Focus on Reducing Environmental Impact

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (March 4, 2014) – Joining the ranks of the country’s leading supporters of sustainability, The Grand Del Mar has been named a member of The Climate Registry and recognized as a “Cool Planet Project Success Story” by this Los Angeles-based nonprofit, the leading voluntary greenhouse gas registry in North America.

Setting consistent standards to calculate, verify and report greenhouse gas emissions into a single registry, The Climate Registry helps organizations measure and reduce CHG emissions. As a member, the resort joins a community of nonprofit, corporate, government, academic and industrial organizations from across North America – all committed to sharing best practices and reducing energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are proud to be affiliated with The Climate Registry, as well as its Cool Planet Project, which offers an opportunity for SDG&E business customers to take action on climate change,” said Tom Voss, president of The Grand Del Mar. “Our sustainability efforts have expanded considerably since the resort opened more than six years ago.”

Since it opened in 2007, The Grand Del Mar has made it a priority to reduce its carbon footprint through an aggressive energy reduction strategy. In 2012, the hotel hired James Tosh, a full time sustainability manager, to focus on reducing the resort’s environmental impact while enhancing energy efficiency. Highlights of the resort’s sustainability program include:
• Using the most energy efficient lighting available, including compact fluorescent, high-efficiency light bulbs in all guestrooms and corridors.
• Replacing over 5,000 standard incandescent bulbs with high efficiency LED bulbs. In 2013, the hotel replaced its standard mechanical thermostats with state-of-the-art “smart” thermostats which can detect when a room is unoccupied and communicate this information directly with the property management system.
• Utilizing zero-emission utility carts; The Grand Golf Club’s fleet features the energy efficient “Precedent i2” electric golf carts by Club Car.
• Instituting a carpool program which saved employees 900 car trips to and from work in 2013.
• Taking advantage of recycling programs, earning the resort nods as “Recycler of the Year” from the City of San Diego in both 2012 and 2013.
• Replacing 15 fountain and pool pumps with high efficiency variable-frequency drive (VFD) pumps. In some cases, the hotel saw energy savings in excess of 80%.
The hotel is currently retro-commissioning all the buildings on property to ensure all systems are working as efficiently as possible.

According to Voss, these projects have resulted in considerable energy reductions totaling more than three million pounds of carbon dioxide – or the equivalent of taking 286 cars off the road.

“We are continually looking for ways to reduce our energy consumption and encourage our staff to make their own lifestyle changes as well,” he said.

The Grand Del Mar Voted #1 Hotel In U.S. By Tripadvisor, Earns Trio Of Forbes Five-Star Designations
Posted January 22, 2014
San Diego Resort Retains Both Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond Rankings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Continuing to gain national and international acclaim, The Grand Del Mar has been voted the number one hotel in the United States, the number one luxury hotel in this country and the number 11 luxury hotel worldwide by readers of TripAdvisor, the popular travel booking and review website. Additionally, the San Diego resort was ranked the number 14 hotel worldwide – based on more than 700,000 hotels evaluated in the website’s annual Travelers’ Choice awards.

The TripAdvisor awards coincide with today’s much anticipated release of the coveted Forbes Travel Guide rating. For the third consecutive year, The Grand Del Mar has achieved a trio of Five-Star awards from the venerable travel guide for lodging, The Spa at The Grand Del Mar and for Addison, the resort’s signature restaurant.
These awards come on the heels of William Bradley, executive chef of Addison, winning the second annual Culinary Masters Competition by Robb Report, an international luxury lifestyle magazine.

"Our resort just celebrated its six-year anniversary, and we are more than honored to have received such remarkable recognition in a relatively short amount of time,” said Thomas Voss, president of The Grand Del Mar.

In addition to its TripAdvisor status, The Grand Del Mar is the only resort in San Diego, and one of a handful of hotels in the country, to receive three Five-Star designations from Forbes in 2014.

This marks the third year that The Grand Del Mar has attained Five-Stars for lodging; the fourth year that The Spa at The Grand Del Mar – a 21,000-square-foot, Renaissance-inspired resort showpiece – has received Five-Stars; and the sixth year that its highly acclaimed signature dining venue, Addison, has earned the sought after designation.

Further affirming its status as one of the country’s leading luxury hotels, the resort retained its AAA Five Diamond rating for the fifth straight year, while Addison earned the AAA Five Diamond distinction for the sixth consecutive year.

“Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond rankings set the industry standard for excellence, while the TripAdvisor accolades comes directly from our guests,” Voss added. “The combination of these awards is a powerful testament to the hard work of our very talented and gracious staff."

Now in its 12th year, the annual TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards are based on the global site's millions of user reviews of hotels collected in a single year. All are broken down into the following categories: top hotels, luxury, bargain, service, small hotels and B&Bs and inns.

Formerly known as Mobil Travel Guide, Forbes Travel Guide has set the gold standard for the hospitality industry since 1958. All 2014 Four- and Five-Star winners are featured on www.forbestravelguide.com, which details the rigorous inspection process. Only properties that meet Forbes’ stringent hospitality standards achieve a Five-Star, Four-Star or Recommended rating.

Also representing the upper echelon of the hospitality industry, the Five Diamond award is American Automobile Association’s top ranking and reserved for properties with the highest degree of service, quality, ultra-luxurious facilities and top-notch amenities. Resort To Donate Percentage of Group Booking Proceeds To Charity

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (February 9, 2009) - The Grand Del Mar - the breathtaking resort and spa just north of San Diego - has announced the creation of two forward-thinking programs designed to support sustainability: a new eco-minded outdoor team building session for groups of all sizes, as well as an ongoing fundraising effort for The California Native Plant Society, which works to protect and preserve the state's indigenous plants.
Native Plant Restoration Program For Groups of Any Size
According to The Grand Del Mar's onsite naturalist, Dylan Jones, the Native Plant Restoration Program - the resort's newest option for groups - focuses on the neighboring Los Peasquitos Canyon Preserve, a stunning coastal canyon rich in local natural history, and brimming with flora, wildlife, flowing creeks and waterfalls. Accommodating up to 100 participants, the program encompasses a guided hike and/or mountain bike adventure into the heart of the nearby preserve, followed by an afternoon of planting native foliage. Working with resort staff as well as the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department rangers, team members will work together to help rejuvenate the preserve's natural habitat, planting multiple species of indigenous plants, shrubs and bushes, such as Sycamore, Coastal Live Oak, California Buckwheat, Scrub Oak, Toyon (Christmas Berry), and California Sage Brush.
"The park is extremely popular with the public and very well-worn in areas," said Jones. "This program will help infuse new life into the canyon, while providing an exhilarating team building experience for group members." In fact, Jones noted, participants will emerge from the session with a sense of camaraderie - and the knowledge that they have contributed their time and hard work to restoring one of the region's most important natural habitats.
The cost for the program, which includes an interpretive hike into the canyon focusing on native plants and the associated wildlife connections, plants, tools, water, backpack and snacks, is $159.00/per person, with a minimum of 20 participants.
Group Donation Program Benefits The California Native Plant Society and Other Causes
To further support native plant life, The Grand Del Mar is glad to donate three percent of a group meeting's proceeds to The California Native Plant Society to help San Diego public schools plant onsite gardens, upon request by the meeting planner. According to Rob Stirling, director of sales and marketing, proceeds from this fundraising endeavor will help purchase plants for schools throughout San Diego County. "If the participating meeting planner has a charity or non-profit that they would prefer to support, The Grand Del Mar will make the donation to the organization of their choice instead," Stirling said. "Either way, it's a win-win, the meeting planners and the resort both contribute to a worthy cause."
About The Grand Del Mar

The Grand Del Mar Earns Top Honors in Two Annual Readers' Choice Surveys
Posted April 6, 2009
SAN DIEGO, CA (October 21, 2008) - Continuing to garner critical acclaim, The Grand Del Mar - San Diego's opulent new luxury resort - has received top honors in two leading industry publications, including Cond Nast Traveler, which ranks the property as one of the "Top 100" resorts in the world in its Annual Readers' Choice Awards issue.

The annual survey, in which more than 32,000 readers rate the world's top travel experiences (including hotels, resorts, cruises, islands and cities) appears in the November 2008 edition of Cond Nast Traveler and lists The Grand Del Mar amongst the world's top resorts, ranking it number four amongst 75 Top U.S. Mainland Resorts. The survey is described as "the
largest independent poll of consumer preferences in the U.S."

The 21st Annual Reader's Choice issue ranks 1,000 global travel experiences - from Baden-Baden to Bora Bora - and comes on the heels of the magazine's 2008 "Hot List," the industry's definitive guide for the world's most exciting establishments, which showcased The Grand Del Mar as a "Top New Hotel."

"To be recognized twice in six months in Cond Nast Traveler is a huge honor, especially since the resort has only been open for a year, and the magazine is recognized as one of the country's premier travel publications," said Tom Voss, president of The Grand Del Mar.

Adding to the resort's extensive list of kudos, The Spa at The Grand Del Mar was named "Favorite New U.S. Spa," by SPA magazine in its Silver Sage Readers' Choice Awards issue, which hits the newsstands in late October.

The resort's ultra-luxury spa venue was ranked number one amongst five other recently opened U.S. Spas: Golden Door Spa, Naples Grande Beach Resort, Naples, Florida; Rock Spa, Hard Rock Hotel, San Diego, California; Willow Stream Spa, Fairmont, Newport Beach, California; and Spa Solage, Solage Calistoga, Calistoga, California.

According to the magazine's editor in chief Julie Sinclair, more than 59,000 votes were cast for the magazine's second annual Readers' Choice Awards. The November/December 2008 issue recognizes the top five favorites in each of 17 categories, including Affordable Spa, Cruise Line Spa, Destination Spa, Eco/Green Spa, Hot Springs Spa, Medical/Wellness Spa, New U.S. Spa, Spa for Couples, Spa for Cuisine, Spa for Traveling Solo, and Resort or Hotel Spa in
Continental U.S., Canada, Mxico, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and Hawaii & South Pacific.

Embracing the creative spirit of the Renaissance with a full slate of rejuvenating natural therapies, The Spa at The Grand Del Mar has consistently garnered rave reviews from the public and press alike, and was also named one of the "Top New Spas" in Cond Nast Traveler Magazine's 2008 "Hot List."
