Arizona Biltmore Shifts into High Gear for Second Year of Thrilling Super Car Driving Tours

PHOENIX – September 24, 2015: The Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort has brought back the super car ultimate driving experience – with even more high-gear excitement for 2015-2016.

The Waldorf Astoria Driving Experience puts guests behind the wheel of some of the world’s most exclusive super cars on a thrilling Arizona driving tour, and for the second season the program has been expanded with more tour dates – including, for the first time, tours in January, when the spotlight of the car world is on Phoenix. Leading collectors and devotees descend on the city for the quintessential annual car auctions and the glamorous Arizona Concours d’Elegance at the Arizona Biltmore.

“Aficionados of iconic, ultra-performance vehicles will be immersed in an adrenaline-rush experience that includes driving three different super cars,” said Arizona Biltmore General Manager Sheila Foley. “We’ve charted a breathtaking, bespoke itinerary that plies stunning desert and mountain roads guided again by Belgian racing champion Didier Theys.”

The Waldorf Astoria Driving Experience will be offered at the Arizona Biltmore on:
• October 30 - November 1, 2015
• November 6 - 8, 2015
• November 20 - 22, 2015
• January 15 - 17, 2016.

On every date there will be morning, afternoon and evening sessions, with each tour lasting two-and-a-half hours. The vehicles will be a Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren MP4-12C and Porsche GT3. On some dates, one of the cars may be substituted with a Lamborghini Gallardo. All participants will have a turn at the wheel of each of the super cars. Prior to setting off, participants will receive an introduction to the cars and a presentation on the driving itinerary.

Theys, who will be at the helm of the lead car when Arizona Biltmore guests put the rubber to the road on the scenic driving tour of Arizona, has won the checkered flag on multiple occasions including the 24 Hours of Daytona twice, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Sports Racing Prototype driver championship of the Grand-American Road Racing Association. He has also been a three-time podium finisher at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Waldorf Astoria Driving Experience is $999.00 per couple, excluding accommodations.

Iconic Arizona Biltmore Transformed by Major Restoration

Polished and refined, the Arizona Biltmore shines brighter than ever.
Iconic Arizona Biltmore Transformed by Major Restoration

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Oct. 27, 2014: The legendary Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort (www.arizonabiltmore.com) has completed a major renovation that has significantly enhanced the guest experience and restored the iconic property’s competitive position in the Phoenix/Scottsdale luxury resort marketplace.

The multi-million-dollar renovation has created modern, refined accommodations and public spaces while preserving the historic architecture and design that distinguish the grand dame of Phoenix. Guest rooms and suites, the spa and salon, and meeting spaces – including ballrooms, pre-function rooms and the Mystery Room, the Prohibition-era “speakeasy” that is used for themed events – have been re-mastered with a sophisticated new look that recalls the seductive style of the resort’s early years. The redesign is chic and contemporary, while continuing the original Frank Lloyd Wright style of organically incorporating the natural environment.

The revamp of the landmark property also comprised rebuilding and redesigning the 15 cabanas at the Paradise Pool that now feature luxurious new interior décor and an array of amenities, from flatscreen HDTVs to full baths. Refinements were also made to the service culture and communications tools were re-imagined, including instituting True Waldorf Service, new uniforms for the front-of-the-house team, a new website and a glossy new, comprehensive history book that recounts the storied lore of the famous property.

“The renovation of our historic property has recaptured our premier status in the Phoenix-Scottsdale resort marketplace by merging classic luxury with chic modern sanctuary,” said Sheila Foley, General Manager. “Our guests are now enjoying aesthetically re-mastered accommodations and world-class facilities in an ambiance of classic elegance reinvigorated by modern interpretations.”

In the guest rooms, a soft color palette of mist, linen and latte created a light and cheerful ambiance, juxtaposed with contrasting warm wood colors that emulate the natural tones of the surrounding desert. Specialty glass tops on bureaus in a thick mist color bring the soothing atmosphere of a desert oasis indoors. Echoing the distinctive use of metals in the original hotel design, bronze and gold metal accents in the guest rooms evoke a distinguished vintage ambiance. A particularly memorable feature, bringing a special touch of elegance and grandeur, are the mist-colored wall coverings embossed with a metallic Frank Lloyd Wright design, echoing the historic pattern on the Biltmore Blocks used to construct the entire resort.

Frank Lloyd Wright drawings of the hotel gardens, blended with geometric shapes, were the innovative inspiration for the new carpet in the corridors, creating an avant-garde historic interpretation. This contemporary merging of Wright designs and geometric patterns was the theme as well for the Frank Lloyd Wright and McArthur ballrooms, which were refreshed with new carpet, wall coverings, artwork and furniture. The ballrooms and their pre-function areas also were enhanced with technologically advanced production, signage and lighting capabilities.

The renovation was directed by Santa Barbara-based Smith & Firestone Associates (SFA), a leading international luxury hospitality interior design firm. www.SFAdesign.com

Arizona Biltmore Hosting 2nd Annual Arizona Concours d’Elegance
Posted August 22, 2014
Featuring Classic and Exotic Automobiles

PHOENIX, August 22, 2014: Following a successful and inspiring inaugural Arizona Concours d’Elegance held last year at the historic Arizona Biltmore, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, the iconic grand dame of Phoenix will host the 2nd annual Arizona Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, January 11, 2015.

“With our warm and sunny winter weather in Phoenix, and our historic architecture dating from 1929 that perfectly complements and enhances the vintage experience of the Concours d’Elegance, everyone can look forward to a spectacular day of dazzling automobiles and reliving history,” said Arizona Biltmore General Manager Sheila Foley.

America’s most celebrated architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was also a dedicated car enthusiast. In tribute to his influence on the landmark design of the host hotel (Wright was the consulting architect of the Arizona Biltmore), the 2015 Arizona Concours d’Elegance will feature The Cars of Frank Lloyd Wright. Among the vehicles will be his 1937 AC 16/80 “Ace” roadster (pictured here, with Wright and wife Olgivanna wearing sporty fabric helmets and goggles, in a photo taken in 1948). Wright drove the Ace roadster during his winter stays in the Phoenix area.

In addition to The Cars of Frank Lloyd Wright, three other classes will be specially featured at next year’s event: Pre-1965 competition Ferraris; classic American luxury brand Pierce-Arrow; and the cars of Carrozzeria Ghia, the Italian design house that celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2015.

In 2015, 80 exceptional automobiles spanning the history of motoring will be on display at the Arizona Biltmore’s expansive central courtyard of verdant, manicured grass areas and colorful flower beds. Judges will pick winners in 17 different specialty classes – from antique and full classic to sports cars and exotics – as well as select the coveted Best of Show winner.

Well-known veteran Concours judge John Carlson will again serve as chief judge. Keith Martin, publisher of Sports Car Market and American Car Collector magazines, also will return as the event’s host and emcee.

The 2nd annual Arizona Concours d’Elegance will be a charity event as in 2014, with proceeds benefitting Make-A-Wish Arizona, the founding chapter of the national organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. www.wishaz.org.

Concours d’Elegance tickets are $75. Tickets may be purchased at the event or in advance at www.ArizonaConcours.com.

For car aficionados who attend the event, the Arizona Biltmore will be offering special room rates. For more information and reservations, call 800-950-0086 or 602-955-6600, or online at www.arizonabiltmore.com.

Concours d'Elegance, a French phrase meaning a “competition of elegance,” dates back to 17th century Paris when the aristocracy would parade horse-drawn carriages in the parks during summer weekends and holidays. As carriages gave way to automobiles, the events evolved into competitions among owners of prestigious cars. The Arizona Concours d’Elegance is modeled after the great Concours of Pebble Beach in California and Villa d’Este in Italy.
