Boston, MA – December 18, 2013 – Starwood Hotels and Resorts is pleased to announce the appointments of Michael C. Jorgensen as new general manager and Frank Guzzi as hotel manager for the 793-room Westin Boston Waterfront. Collectively, they have more than 45 years of experience in the hotel industry, each working with some of the world’s leading hotel brands. The announcement was made by Doug Wilkins of Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
“Michael and Frank not only bring an impressive skill set to The Westin Boston Waterfront,” says Wilkins, “but they also have extensive knowledge of Starwood’s philosophy when it comes to achieving overall guest satisfaction. Likewise, their recent experience in the Boston marketplace is a solid asset to working so closely with the teams at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center [BCEC] and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority [MCCA].” The Westin Boston Waterfront is directly connected to the BCEC.
Michael Jorgensen was most recently General Manager of the 803-room Westin Copley Place Boston in Back Bay where he was named 2013 “General Manager of the Year” by the Massachusetts Lodging Association. During his tenure at Westin Copley, the hotel earned various awards and accolades, including the AH&LA Stars of the Industry award for “Special Events, Ongoing, Large Property.” Under his leadership, the Westin Copley was also named “Westin Hotel of the Year” by Starwood Hotels and Resorts in 2008.
Prior to his arrival in Boston, Jorgensen served as General Manager of the Westin St. Louis, which like the Westin Copley, is a Four Diamond hotel that was consistently ranked among the top ten for Guest Service and / or Meeting Planner Indexes. Jorgensen has more than 13 years of experience with Starwood Hotels and Resorts in these two roles as a general manager for Westin Hotels.
Prior to joining Starwood, Jorgensen was Vice President and General Manager for The Drake Hotel in Oak Brook, Illinois and also worked for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts for nearly a decade in various management and rooms division capacities. In addition, he has operational experience with Hyatt Hotels Corporation on his resume. Originally from Connecticut, Jorgensen graduated from the University of New Haven with a BS degree in Hotel Administration.
“I’m thrilled to join the Westin Boston Waterfront and excited to call the growing South Boston neighborhood my new home away from home,” Jorgensen said. “The hotel is an exceptional product in a thriving section of the city and boasts an environment and team of associates with a multitude of backgrounds and cultures. Coming to work here each day is a pleasure, and Frank and I are excited to make a positive impact on a hotel that is already a leader in the city.”
As a general manager, Jorgensen fosters a culture of accountability for achieving success and surpassing guest expectations through leadership by example, and he notes that Frank Guzzi “lives and breathes this philosophy as well.”
Guzzi has an extensive sales and marketing background, capped by his recent role as Director of Sales and Marketing for one of Starwood’s other Boston properties, the Sheraton Boston Hotel. In this capacity, he worked closely with the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority to help market the Sheraton’s connection to the Hynes Convention Center and their role as a partner in 3-2-1 Connect Boston. He also worked with Jorgensen at the Westin Copley Place as the hotel’s Director of Sales and has held numerous sales positions with local Marriott hotels and Marriott International. Guzzi is a graduate of the Whittemore School of Business Management at the University of New Hampshire.
