ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (February 1, 2013) – The eighth annual Borgata Winter Poker Open came to a conclusion today, announcing the winner of its WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship event which saw 1,042 participants generate a prize pool of $3,438,600.
Andy Hwang, a 27-year-old poker professional from Houston, Texas, outlasted an immense field of amateur and professional players to take home over $730,000 and add his name to the distinguished list of Borgata Winter Poker Open Champions including Joshua Mancuso (2012), Vadim Shlez (2011), Jeffrey Madsen (2010), Steven Weinstein (2009), Gavin Griffin (2008), John Hennigan (2007) and Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi (2006).
"I've always heard good things about Borgata tournaments,” said Hwang, who traveled to Borgata to play in the series’ Six-Max and Championship events. “The structures of the tournaments are very good."
This year’s Winter Poker Open began in record-breaking fashion, as the tournament’s $560 Big Stack No Limit Hold’em opening event saw the largest turnout in the history of East Coast poker – a record-breaking 3,871 participants entered into the first event, generating $1,935,500 in prize money.
Borgata’s partnership with the World Poker Tour has proven to be extremely successful, as this year’s championship event marks the fourth consecutive turn-out of over 1,000 participants, dating back to September of 2010.
“We continue to be thrilled with the huge turnouts and number of big-name players WPT events are attracting at Borgata,” said WPT CEO Steve Heller. “Over the past few years, Borgata events have drawn some of the largest fields in WPT history. It’s obvious that Borgata’s reputation and attentiveness to its players mark it not only as a favorite tournament destination, but also as one of our premier partners. We’re very proud of our decade-long relationship with Borgata, and we look forward to setting even more records in the years to come.”
