Two years after being forced to close due to earthquake damage, The Mauna Kea reopened with a traditional Hawaiian blessing and welcomed its first guests to experience a multi-million dollar investment in redesigned, spacious guest rooms, new restaurants, a new spa, and an extensive makeover of the legendary golf course complete with a new clubhouse.

The Dec. 20 date represents a soft opening, with a full opening planned for March.

The 258-room resort was closed in December 2006, two months after an earthquake caused structural damage. The hotel has rehired many of its former employees.

When the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel originally opened in 1965 at a cost of $15 million, it was the most expensive hotel ever built in Hawaii at the time.
