November 11, 2011, marked the one-year anniversary of The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico, set between a two-mile stretch of private beach and El Yunque, the only rain forest in the U.S. national forest system. The former coconut plantation lies a convenient 20-minute drive from the airport yet provides a secluded atmosphere packed with opportunities to keep everyone entertained.

A stroll through the 483-acre grounds reveals thick stands of native seagrape and almonds, palms and flamboyant trees, nature trails, lakes, and river channels. Guests plunge into everything from eco-tours to kayaking on the Espiritu Santo River to a children’s program, Remède Spa, athletic club, tennis center, pool with cabanas, and championship golf designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. A boathouse takes care of snorkeling, diving, water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, and fishing. Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurant Fern caters to guests in an epicurean mood, while the restaurant Molasses serves a more casual menu of clubhouse and island fare.

The St. Regis Bahía Beach Resort was awarded the “Development of the Year Award” by the Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit (CHRIS), which focuses on hotel and tourism investment opportunities in the Caribbean and is held annually in Miami, Florida. The Resort competed with other new developments in the hospitality business for the Award, including the Hyatt Regency Curaçao Golf Resort, Spa & Marina and the W Vieques Retreat & Spa in Puerto Rico. A total of 350 developments participated in the conference, including investors, developers, hotel managers, bankers, property executives, real estate agents, and national press.

Fern was recently included in Wine Spectator’s Restaurant Wine List Awards by receiving its coveted Award of Excellence, given to the restaurant after evaluating the wine selections offered and their strength and prices. To qualify, the restaurant submitted a wine list that included vintage, non-vintage, rosé and white selections, all from Spain, France, Italy, and California, among other regions.
