THE RITZ-CARLTON, SARASOTA EARNS
Posted May 2, 2008
SARASOTA, FL " December 19, 2007 - The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota has been recognized for its environmental performance with the Department of Environmental Protections Green Lodging Certification. The DEPs Green Lodging Certification program evaluates how a facility manages water conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction and indoor air quality in their commitment to protect and conserve Floridas natural resources. It is a voluntary, non-regulatory program established by the State of Florida to reward environmentally conscious facilities (i.e. green hotels) in the lodging industry. The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota was named a Green Lodge for meeting or exceeding the requirements set by the program while demonstrating a dedication to continually improve its environmental performance. The Sarasota property is the first Ritz-Carlton to receive this recognition.

This designation reinforces our reputation and commitment to be known as a positive, supportive member of our community and sensitive to the environment, said James McManemon, general manager. This effort was one hundred percent driven by our employees who can be credited with taking the important measures to raise awareness, improve efficiencies and create a healthier environment for both themselves and for our guests.

In 2003 The Ritz-Carlton Energy Action Conservation Team (REACT) was implemented to address the protection of our environment by conserving natural resources. The REACT Team, consisting mainly of engineers, would meet a minimum of once per month to review utility consumption and costs as well as continue coming up with ideas to drive conservation issues. As more employees expressed their desire to get involved and expand efforts, a homespun organization, the Green Team evolved. The Green Team meets once a week and is comprised of individuals from all parts of the hotel including housekeeping, engineering, kitchen, front office, maintenance, sales, human resources and upper management. The Green Team is responsible for ensuring that all environmental practices, in which the hotel is participating, are being performed in a timely and accurate fashion.

To be considered for Floridas Green Lodging certification, lodgings must complete and submit an application for admission and implement core activities. Once core activities are complete, properties request an on-site certification review in which the resort will undergo a thorough inspection by one of the DEPs trained, professional assessors. With the addition of The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, the program has designated over 70 hotels and has more than 230 applicants.
