Napa’s The Meritage Resort and Spa Earns 2013 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence
Posted June 3, 2013
Honored as a Top Performing Hotel as Reviewed by Travelers on the World’s Largest Travel Site
NAPA, Calif. (June 3, 2013) – The Meritage Resort and Spa today announced that it has received a 2013 TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments worldwide that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor. Only the top-performing 10 percent of businesses listed on TripAdvisor receive this prestigious award.

To qualify for a Certificate of Excellence, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers on TripAdvisor, and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months. The Meritage Resort has a four rating and more than 500 reviews on the site.

This award couples with the announcement by TripAdvisor in May 2013 that Napa was rated number 16 in its 2013 Travelers' Choice Destination, the highest ranking wine region in the awards.

“The Meritage Resort and Spa is pleased to receive TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence,” said Michael Palmer, general manager for The Meritage Resort and Spa. “This is a testament for the high quality service our entire staff offers and the memorable experience they create for our valued guests. NAPA, Calif. (August 10, 2011) – As The Meritage Resort and Spa prepares to add an additional 12,500 square feet of meeting space and 165 guestrooms in spring 2012, it has joined Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI). Meritage Resort and Spa Teams Up with Clean the World Campaign

Unused Soap and Amenities Help Save Lives Around the World
NAPA, CA - July 26, 2011 - In conjunction with Preferred Hotels Group, The Meritage Resort and Spa has teamed up with the Clean the World campaign to help save the lives of children around the world. Every day in the United States alone, one to 1.5 million bars of soap are thrown away along with other bathroom amenities like shampoo. These unused soaps and bathroom amenities can be sanitized and distributed to millions around the world to help stop the spread of and deaths from diarrheal disease and acute respiratory infections.

Every year 3.5 million children under the age of five die because of two deadly diseases: acute respiratory injection (pneumonia) and diarrheal disease (cholera). The most tragic part of this statistic is that up to 65 percent of these deaths could be prevented through simple hand washing with a bar of soap. Clean the World has teamed up with more than 260 hospitality partners across the nation to recycle their unused soap and bathroom amenities. Once collected and sanitized they distribute them to those in need in more than 50 countries worldwide, including some of the poorest regions in Africa, the Caribbean and Central America.

The Meritage Resort and Spa’s partnership with Clean the World will initially support 131 children with enough soap and 65 children with enough bottled amenities for an entire year. When the resort’s 165 room expansion is complete in Spring 2012 those numbers are expected to more than double. Soap will be provided to an estimated 266 children and 132 will receive bottled amenities each year. Not only will this effort help children around the world, but it will also help to remove approximately two tons of waste from our landfills each year.

“This program doesn’t just protect the environment, it saves lives,” said Sheri Thomas, director of sales and marketing for The Meritage Resort and Spa. “We are proud to be able to partner with Clean the World to help prevent needless illness and death around the world.”

This is part of The Meritage Resort and Spa’s continued effort to be a more environmentally-friendly resort. In addition to recycling soap and bathroom amenities, the resort utilizes compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout the property and places recycle bins next to every trash can on the premises – including guest rooms. It has also replaced all paper products with recycled paper products where possible, including facial tissue, toilet paper and paper towels. The resort also uses reusable tote bags and compostable to-go containers, biodegradable silverware and greenware plastic cups and plates rather than traditional plasticware.

Meritage Resort and Spa Hires New Executive Chef
Posted July 26, 2011
Self-taught Chef Brings New Flavor to Siena
NAPA, CA - July 26, 2011 - The Meritage Resort and Spa has hired Michael Collins as its new executive chef. Chef Mike, as he prefers to be called, began at the end of May and is in charge of all hotel food operations, including the signature Siena restaurant and banquets. As The Meritage Resort and Spa’s expansion readies for its Spring 2012 grand opening he will also develop menus and themes for its new Crush Ultra-Lounge and Café. He is currently working to add some new flavors to the Tuscan-inspired Siena restaurant, making it a place where both area residents and resort guests can feel welcome.

Chef Mike grew up in Sacramento, California, and learned to cook by watching his Sicilian mother and grandmother dish up spectacular Christmas Eve dinners and nightly meals that were just as tasty. When he was 12 his mother took a traveling sales job. With a father whose idea of cooking was making a sandwich, Chef Mike was determined to make meals just like his mother and grandmother had. By age 16 he was helping at local restaurants, and at age 18 he became a professional chef and completed a culinary apprenticeship at the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia. In his nearly 25-year career he has taken various chef positions at four and five star resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Arizona, Louisiana, Maui, Utah and throughout California.

Just a few days after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Chef Mike began consulting with and later accepted the challenge of being the Executive Chef at the historic Windsor Court Hotel. He was tasked with reopening all culinary operations at the world class hotel, while revamping the menu at its fabled restaurant, The New Orleans Grill. While Chef Mike ensured that every guest had the perfect meal, he will never forget meeting with then President Bush on several occasions and preparing many meals for him and his staff during their visits to the city.

Now back in California, Chef Mike is getting reacquainted with the tastes of the Napa Valley and is working on updating the Siena menu, keeping many of the dishes that residents and guests love while bringing his own unique creations to diners’ plates. He envisions the menu as one that blends Italian and Californian influences, combined with light cooking methods to produce rustic dishes that are full of bold yet simple flavors. Chef Mike is working to train his sous chefs to cook by taste, rather than recipe, a skill they will continue to need as the restaurant strives to purchase as many local ingredients as possible, including eggs, fresh produce, meats and seafood.

“My goal with Siena is to make it friendly to both travelers and Napa residents,” said Chef Mike. “My vision is to create dishes and an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable coming in, relaxing and eating fabulous food that is also friendly to their pocketbooks.”

Chef Mike now lives in Napa, with his wife and eight-month-old daughter. He is an avid golfer and fisherman. When not in his chef’s jacket, you may be able to find him on the greens of nearby Chardonnay Golf Club, Eagle Vines Golf Club and Silverado’s two golf courses.

“This program doesn’t just protect the environment, it saves lives,” said Sheri Thomas/Michael Palmer, director of sales and marketing/general manager for The Meritage Resort and Spa.

It has also replaced all paper products with recycled paper, including facial tissue, toilet paper and paper towels. Meeting planners also have the option to use recycled paper for handouts and can utilize biodegradable silverware and greenware plastic cups and plates rather than traditional plasticware.
