Elite Overview
From the editors of Elite Meetings
William Jennings Bryant pronounced The Grove Park Inn “built for the ages” when it opened in Ashville, North Carolina, in 1913. He was right. Subsequent decades found everyone from Harry Houdini to Eleanor Roosevelt and George Bush inspired by the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson and others inscribed on the lobby's granite walls.
Groups visiting the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa today still find inspiration in the lobby but also in the Grand and Heritage Ballrooms, venues with more than 25,000 square feet of space for modern trade shows and exhibits. The 42 conference rooms meet every need, from theater and classroom seating to boardrooms and banquets. An award-winning spa and restaurants, 512 luxurious guest rooms, a sports complex, and Donald Ross golf headline a long list of incentives—rivaled only by the timeless beauty of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

TEN UNITED STATES PRESIDENTS STAY AT THE GROVE PARK INN RESORT & SPA
Posted April 28, 2009
ASHEVILLE, NC (January 5, 2009) The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa has been the Choice of United States Presidents for over eight decades. Perhaps they are drawn by the pure Carolina mountain air, impeccable service, unequaled cuisine, Donald Ross golf course and world class spa or perhaps the lure is that staying in such a majestic place does in itself make one a part of its legendary history.
Recently, our President Obama selected The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa for a four day stay while he prepared for his second debate with Senator John McCain.
The roster of United States Presidents is impressive
William Howard Taft - 27th President of the United States (3/4/09 to 3/3/13)
Woodrow Wilson - 28th President of the United States (3/4/13 to 3/3/21)
Calvin Coolidge - 30th President of the United States (9/3/23 to 3/3/29)
Herbert Hoover - 31st President of the United States (3/4/29 to 3/3/33)
Franklin D. Roosevelt - 32nd President of the United States (3/4/33 to 4/12/45)
Dwight D. Eisenhower - 34th President of the United States (1/20/53 to 1/20/61)
Richard M. Nixon " 37th President of the United States (1/20/69 to 8/9/74)
George H. W. Bush - 41st President of the United States (1/20/89 to 1/20/93)
William J. Clinton - 42nd President of the United States (1/20/93 to 1//20/01)
Barack H. Obama - 44th President of the United States (1/20/09 to Present)
Federal agencies controlled the property from 1942 to 1946 during which time the State Department used the Inn as an internment center for Axis diplomats. Philippine government officials were in exile at this time and were also located in one of the guest cottages. The United States Navy has also used the Inn as a rest and rehabilitation center. Substantial renovations began in 1955 when Charles A. Sammons purchases the property; the most recent wings were added to the Inn in 1984 and 1988. A major expansion, completed in February of 2001, added a spa to the grounds. Renovation efforts are ongoing.
The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa is one of the Souths best-loved resorts. Built in 1913 with granite stones mined from Sunset Mountain, the resort overlooks the city of Asheville, N.C., and provides majestic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With its distinctive undulating red clay tile roof and original Roycroft furnishings and fixtures, The Grove Park Inn captures the essence of the Arts and Crafts movement. Throughout its massive lobby, words of inspiration from noted authors and anonymous sources are etched in stone.
