WASHINGTON D.C. (December 11, 2008)â€"The legendary Jockey Club, for decades considered the “place to be” in Washington, D.C. has returned â€" and with it returns the elegant, classic fare and impeccable service that made The Jockey Club one of the most beloved dining destinations in our nation’s capital. After an extensive multi-million dollar restoration that embraces its rich history, The Fairfax at Embassy Row, home to The Jockey Club, has also reemerged as one of Washington D.C.’s preeminent luxury hotels.
During its four decade reign The Jockey Club hosted eight different Presidents and their First Ladies. Today The Jockey Club has reopened its doors to a new generation of Washington leaders and the world’s power brokers. Martin Garbisu, a leading personality in The Jockey Club’s original incarnation, is back as Maitre d’ to welcome guests to the return of a legend.
Authentic cuisine is a top priority at The Jockey Club. Chef Daniel Bruce of the Boston Harbor Hotel oversaw the recreation of The Jockey Club’s menu, reviving classic dishes enjoyed by decades of diners while elevating the cuisine to a new level of excellence. To facilitate the grand re-opening of The Jockey Club, Chef Bruce collaborated with Executive Chef Richard McCreadie, who now leads the culinary team at The Fairfax at Embassy Row, The Jockey Club and Fairfax Lounge. These two renowned and seasoned chefs worked closely together to re-open The Jockey Club and offer inspired dishes that pay homage to the restaurant’s storied history.
The menu reinterprets The Jockey Club’s traditional cuisine with modern presentation and innovative ingredients. The menu features classic dishes such as SautĂ©ed Dover Sole MeuniĂ©re, Jockey Club Chicken Salad, Long Island Duck a l’Orange and Strawberries Romanoff. The new Jockey Club also features breakfast, brunch and lunch options perfect for business breakfasts and power lunches. Another new and improved feature of the revitalized Jockey Club is the wine list. With his passion for food and wine pairing, Chef Bruce has found an imaginative way to celebrate the international flavors of the neighborhood â€" The Jockey Club wine list emphasizes the many countries represented along Embassy Row.
Internationally celebrated designer Nina Campbell directed the renovation and revival of The Jockey Club decor. In keeping with the Fairfax’s multimillion dollar restoration, the design plans for The Jockey Club incorporated signature elements that had historic value. The original bar, a gorgeous piece of carved walnut that was storied to have once decorated a church, was found and refinished. The art nouveau lighting fixtures also reflect the past. From each coffer hangs a gorgeous ceiling pendant crafted from onyx and amber, casting the room with a rich glow.
Through the seating structure, the room is segmented into smaller separate dining areas, which convey a sense of intimacy even when crowded, but still offer seats to see and be seen. The Jockey Club’s signature red and white tablecloths and red leather banquettes have returned. Campbell’s team understood that for The Jockey Club to be successful upon its grand reopening, it would require a stamp of approval from the Washington Insiders who remembered it well, and it would also need to appeal to a younger generation experiencing it for the first time.
