CHICAGO — The historic Drake Hotel will celebrate its 90th birthday with the completion of interior renovations.

Since 2007, the hotel has renovated and enhanced many of its aesthetic attributes, while maintaining the classic charm it is known for worldwide.

Most noticeable are the installations of luxurious gold and royal blue carpet throughout the hotel public areas and guest rooms with beautifully coordinated window and wall treatments. New 42 inch LCD HD flat screen televisions, credenzas and plush ergonomic desk chairs have been installed in all 535 guest rooms, as well. Additional aesthetic improvements and technological advancements are set for completion in 2010.

Fine china, marble tables and upholstered chairs are among new elements in the completely remodeled Palm Court Tea Room, which has served afternoon tea for over 50 years. The Cape Cod Room, famous for its Bookbinder Soup and themed décor, sustains much of its iconic character, but has added more historic memorabilia from years past.

CHICAGO — The historic Drake Hotel will re-open the doors to the classic Coq d’Or bar and lounge on March 1st after a month’s worth of restoration and aesthetic enhancements.

A Chicago institution, the Coq d’Or bar, located on the arcade level of the Drake Hotel, played a memorable role in the history of the city when it became the second bar in Chicago to serve drinks to guests on December 6, 1933, the date which marked the end of 14 years of Prohibition in the state of Illinois.

For the 78 years to follow the bar became a favorite haunt of Streeterville residents, as well as of reporters, politicians, and entertainers and to this day still evokes, and will evoke, the feeling of a bygone “gentleman’s drinking room”.

On February 1st, the Drake closed the doors of Coq d’Or to simply refresh the look and feel of this classic bar and lounge so it can continue to be the Real Chicago hotspot and meeting place for years to come. Enhancements in bar equipment, lighting, furnishings and cabinetry are just some of the details that were a focus of this update. Menus are also being reevaluated and will be introduced in the months to follow the re-opening. Weekend evening entertainment will be reintroduced immediately with a new sound system.

The Coq d’Or is set to open its doors once again to Chicago patrons on March 1st, 2011.
