Under four generations of family ownership since 1928, The Cloister at Sea Island, a coastal Georgia landmark, rests securely in the hearts and minds of discriminating travelers the world over.

For planners seeking a destination unto itself, Sea Island excels in recreational pursuits, with golf as its number-one draw. In fact, Golf Digest recently ranked Sea Island as the best destination for business meetings and golf in America. Its pair of 18-hole courses offer a challenge for every ability. As for the meetings portion of the equation, The Cloister holds 17,000 square feet of indoor space so impressive it earned a spot in Meeting & Conventions magazine's Hall of Fame. Additional event space at the Beach Club offers a private oceanfront alternative ideal for both indoor and outdoor affairs. A staff experienced in hosting high-level meetings coordinates all the details of catering and event support.

Beyond legendary golf, groups can take advantage of the 65,000-square-foot, Mobil Five- Star Award–winning spa and fitness center; horseback rides on the beach; tennis; shooting and fishing; marsh kayaking; and nature tours, all of which can be arranged for individuals or groups. When it's time to retire, the 175 rooms and suites lavish guests in luxury. Standard features include hand-woven Turkish rugs, 45-inch LCD TVs, high-speed Internet access, and deep-soaking tubs.

The resort hit the ball out of the park for us, so the amount of positive feedback from those who attended is no surprise. I was told by our Vice President of Sales that the event surpassed his highest expectations. This couldn't have been achieved without the commitment to customer satisfaction exhibited by Sea Island's staff.

This property is stunning. The guest rooms are spacious and appointed with top shelf products. The butler service is over-the-top. I had my butler unpack for me, and everything was organized, pressed and put away. The spa was wonderful and beautiful. The Golf Learning Center is one of the best I have ever seen. My group consisted of top tier investment bankers, very affluent and well traveled. They thought the Cloister was one of the most beautiful properties we have used anywhere in the world.

Sea Island Resorts' Green Initiatives
Posted 12 May, 2009 by Catherine Denham
Since Howard Coffin founded Sea Island Company in 1926, family ownership and management of the company have maintained a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and careful, measured growth, helping to nurture the unique atmosphere that residents and visitors of the Golden Isles cherish.

Sea Island Company has been a strong proponent of careful planning and zoning. Just after the establishment of the Company, Coffin funded a survey creating the first planning and zoning controls in Glynn County, making Glynn only the second county in the nation to have such guidelines at the time. Today, the Company continues to champion low-density, high-quality development.

The planting of live oaks - the state tree of Georgia and the Southern symbol for strength - has been a meaningful way to commemorate special guests and visitors to The Cloister since President Calvin Coolidge visited in 1928. These commemorative oaks help conserve energy, improve air quality and reduce storm water runoff and soil erosion, in addition to being historical markers highlighting various celebrations in Sea Island's 80+ year history.

As an early and constant supporter of the St. Simons Land Trust, Sea Island Company has donated, via a voluntary nightly contribution added to guests' bills, over $770,000 (as of December 2008.) The Land Trust is dedicated to preserving the island's natural and scenic character and enhancing the quality of life of the island community for present and future generations.

Guest Areas
All cleaning products are environmentally friendly.
Low-water use toilets.
Environmental linen exchange option (groups may elect not to have room linens changed on a daily basis).
Pitcher water service available upon request for group meetings (versus bottled water service).
Lights in meeting rooms and restrooms set to motion sensors.
Photo cells utilized for exterior lighting.
Automatic door closures are on all outside doors.

Landscaping and Outdoor Areas
Oyster Shell Recycling Program; oyster shells are used for walking paths on golf courses as one example.
Weeds are controlled with landscape cloth and mulch.
Electric (versus gas) golf carts used to carry baggage and guests to rooms and on the golf courses.
Filtered water offered in lieu of plastic water bottles for drinking water on all golf courses.
Irrigation water for golf courses is drawn from retention ponds.
Timers set for all sprinklers, which are monitored for leaks daily.
Rain sensors gauge water needs.
Pavers on streets allow water to sink into the ground, circumventing runoff into nearby streams.
Designated no-treat/buffer zones around marsh banks, lake banks and environmentally-sensitive areas, helping to prevent chemicals from seeping into these areas.
Slow-release fertilizers vs. quick-release fertilizers, which quickly seep into water areas.
Minimal amounts of restricted-use pesticides.
160 manmade bird boxes on the golf courses. The bird population is maintained by the varied plant list and excellent water quality of the many lakes surrounding the boxes.

Kitchens and Laundry
Energy-efficient laundry and kitchen equipment.
Partnership with Sapelo Farms, a local family-owned farm run by a mother-daughter duo. Sea Island contributes its organic waste to the farm for compost purposes. Sea Island procures locally grown produce when possible in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint.
Cotton table linens used in place of paper products.

Community Involvement
Partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources; program in place to protect the threatened loggerhead sea turtles nesting on Sea Island's beach.
Donor relationship with the St. Simons Land Trust, resulting in donations amounting to more than $770,000 since November 2001.

Sea Island Company is mindful of its responsibility to present and future generations to be wise stewards of our coastal habitat and the diverse natural wonder that thrives in this region of coastal Georgia. The Company has advocated protection of its surroundings for more than 80 years, a tradition that will continue well into the future.

The Cloister at Sea Island becomes Triple Mobil Five-Star Award Winner
Posted 22 Jan, 2009 by Catherine Denham
SEA ISLAND, GA (Jan. 22, 2009) - Today, a galaxy of stars were swept up by Sea
Island Resorts when Mobil Travel Guide honored the historic, family-owned Georgia
resort with four Five-Star awards. The Cloister at Sea Island made Mobil Five-Star
history when it garnered three of the awards for the hotel itself, its signature restaurant,
the Georgian Room, and the world-class Cloister Spa. In addition, The Lodge at Sea
Island Golf Club maintained its Five-Star distinction for the ninth consecutive year.
The Cloister Spa is the only Mobil Five-Star spa in Georgia and one of only eight so
recognized in the U.S. and Canada. The Georgian Room shares its status with only one
other restaurant in the state and 19 other restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. This
extraordinary recognition by Mobil comes just three years after The Cloister's complete
resort rebuild.
Criteria to earn a Mobil Five-Star rating are stringent, based on more than 750 standards
for hotels, more than 250 for restaurants, and more recently 450 different guidelines for
spas, making it the most rigorous and comprehensive in the industry. To achieve Mobil
Five-Star status, properties must then meet or exceed Mobil's bar-setting service
standards, which are determined through an unannounced, undercover service evaluation
conducted by Mobil Travel Guide's expert inspectors.
"Winning four Mobil Five-Star awards is an incredible achievement," said Bill Jones III,
chairman and CEO, Sea Island Company. "Beautiful buildings alone do not achieve this
level of recognition. People - our employees - make the difference, by providing the
genuine, heart-felt service and authentic Southern hospitality that distinguishes Sea
Island."
The Cloister is no stranger to Mobil's Five-Star awards. Prior to the resort's recent
rebuild, the hotel held the distinction for 22 years. Resuming its place among America's
most extraordinary resorts, The Cloister offers unparalleled levels of service and
hospitality generations have come to expect.
With rich stories and artifacts that date back more than 80 years, Sea Island is the
unequivocal grande dame of historic American resorts. Lured by privacy, value,
impeccable service and comfort, generations of families and noteworthy guests return to
Sea Island year after year.
Commemorating its Mobil Travel Guide historic achievement, Sea Island has created a
Five Star Celebration package. The three-night package, available at either of Sea
Island's Five-Star properties, features a $500 gift card, which can be used for any of the
activities enjoyed by generations of families, including rounds of golf, dining in the
Mobil Five-Star Georgian Room and rest and relaxation at The Cloister's Mobil Five-Star
Spa. Rates for this special value, which is valid Jan. 23 through March 31, 2009, begin at
$525/night and may be booked by calling 888.SEA ISLAND (732.4752) or online at the
resort's web site at www.seaisland.com. Reservations must be made before February 28,
2009.

SEA ISLAND, GA (May 19, 2008) - Buoyed by Sea Island's legendary golf courses, The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club was voted the #1 golf hotel in the "World's 50 Best Golf Hotels" U.S. category by Golf Digest Index, one of the country's leading golf lifestyle quarterlies.

The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club was named tops in the U.S. in four categories - best hotel, hotel rooms, dining and top service - as well as #4 in the U.S. for "top wine and drinks" among the World's 50 Best Golf Hotels. The Cloister at Sea Island was named #3 in the U.S. category among the World's 50 Best Golf Hotels.

The Golf Digest Index spring edition ranked 25 U.S. properties and 25 international properties among its World's 50 Best lists based on surveys of Golf Digest's 800-plus Course Ranking Panelists and a select group of international golfers. A hotel must have on its property or be affiliated in the immediate area with exceptional levels of golf while featuring the "added element of luxury" that elevates it above other global destinations.

Other recent Sea Island golf accolades include Golf Magazine's 2008 list of North America's 10 Best Golf Resorts; Travel + Leisure Golf's 2007 and 2008 top golf community awards; Golf Digest's biennial 2006-2007 #1 Golf Resort in North America; and being selected as the best overall U.S. resort for golf, lodging, dining and activities as determined by GolfOdyssey.com, for 16 years an insiders' guide to sophisticated golf travel.

Located on Georgia's coast, Sea Island has charmed guests since 1928 and is renowned for its luxury golf, resort and real estate experiences. Beginning in the late '90s, Sea Island Resorts embarked upon a $500 million renaissance that razed and rebuilt the resort and transformed three of its legendary resort golf courses (Seaside, Plantation and Retreat).

What remains unchanged behind the luxurious facilities, stack of accolades and exquisite golf is Sea Island's palatable charm, character and enduring traditions that grace guests with an intrinsic, soulful experience as storied as this true American icon. Beyond the magnificence of Sea Island Resorts and its two intimate hotels, The Cloister and The Lodge, is an enviable community comprising three private clubs and five top-rated golf courses, all part of Sea Island Company.

Golf Magazine Names Sea Island One of North America's 10 Best Golf Resorts
Posted 24 Apr, 2008 by Catherine Denham
SEA ISLAND, GA (April 8, 2008) - Sea Island Resorts aced another elite golf ranking last last month, garnering a spot on Golf Magazine's inaugural list of top 10 golf resorts in North America.

Golf Magazine, one of the country's leading golf and travel publications and part of the SI Golf Group, bestowed Sea Island with the publication's first-ever Platinum Medal Award for being chosen as one of North America's top 10 golf resorts based on course design, playability and luxury accommodations. It was the first year Golf Magazine recognized the elite group of 10 resorts topping the magazine's biannual list of 75 "Best Golf Resorts."

Other recent Sea Island golf accolades include Travel + Leisure Golf's 2007 and 2008 top golf community awards; Golf Digest's 2006-2007 #1 golf resort in North America; and being selected as the best overall U.S. resort for golf, lodging, dining and activities as determined by GolfOdyssey.com, for 16 years an insiders guide to sophisticated golf travel.

Although this was the 20th anniversary of Golf's list of best resort awards, it was the first time the magazine gave avid golfers the opportunity to vote through the publication's website, Golf.com. The publication did not rank the top 10 golf resorts in any particular order.

Golf recognized Sea Island as a "family-owned retreat that has transformed itself into a terrific 21st Century resort rather than remain a relic of a bygone era."

Located on Georgia's southern coast, Sea Island has been charming guests since 1928 and is renowned for its luxury golf, resort and real estate experiences. Beginning in the late '90s, Sea Island Resorts embarked upon a $500 million renaissance development that revitalized the resort and transformed three of its legendary golf courses (Seaside, Plantation and Retreat).

Mobil Travel Guide Bestows Prestigious Awards On Sea Island Resorts
Posted 29 Feb, 2008 by Catherine Denham
SEA ISLAND, GA (Jan. 28, 2008) " For the seventh consecutive year, The Lodge at Sea Island has been awarded Five Stars by Mobil Travel Guide while The Cloister Hotels two-year-old Georgian Room joins only 17 other restaurants in the U.S. and Canada to boast the coveted Five Stars.

"I am extremely proud that our employees, service and facilities have been recognized with two separate Mobil Five-Star awards," said Bill Jones III, Chairman and CEO of Sea Island Company, and fourth-generation head of the legendary family-owned Sea Island Resorts that opened in 1928. "Winning one award, as The Lodge has since it opened, is exceptional. Winning two is quite rare. We have asked our employees to aim for the very high goal of achieving four Five-Star awards in the future, and we are working toward that at The Cloister and The Spa, as we continue settling into these new resort buildings."

At the forefront of Sea Island Resorts $500 million renaissance, The Lodge opened in 2001 while the Georgian Room debuted as the quintessential dining experience for The Cloister in the spring of 2006. The 65,000-square-foot spa and fitness center opened that fall. Both The Cloister and its Spa were recognized with Mobil Four-Star designations in 2007.

The Lodge provides an intimate 40-room English manor for Sea Island Club golfers and guests. Surrounded by the sandy Atlantic beach, world-class Sea Island Golf Learning Center and lush Plantation and Seaside golf courses, The Lodge named Top Small Hotel by Zagat Survey was among the rare resorts to receive both the annual AAA Five- Diamond and Mobil Five-Star ratings so early in its existence.

The Lodges ethereal serenity includes a personal 24-hour butler welcoming guests to the grace, quality and members lifestyle that few experience, all in a resort setting. The richly wooded Lodge includes two restaurants, wine cellar, spa, extensive antiques, golf shop and must-see 10,000-square-foot mens locker room. From The Lodge terrace, guests are treated to a bagpiper performing a traditional Scottish sunset serenade, marking the end of each golf day.

The Georgian Rooms unsurpassed gastronomic celebration is achieved through the flavorful menu of refined American cuisine created by Chef Scott Crawford and exquisite wines from The Cloister Cellar chosen by Sommelier Thomas Roberts.

Too many people relax after receiving such an award, thinking theyve made it. We are very humbled and see it as a great responsibility, said Crawford, whose tenure at West Coast, Northeast and Southern restaurants includes five prior Mobil Five-Star or AAA Five-Diamond honors. Now expectations of our diners go up. We work very hard to make sure we are five-star every night, with every guest.

Since 1958, the Mobil Travel Guides ratings process has been regarded as the most rigorous and comprehensive in the industry with more than 750 standardized criteria for hotels, more than 250 for restaurants, and some 450 different criteria for spas.

Travel + Leisure Golf Names Sea Island America's Top Golf Community
Posted 14 Feb, 2008 by Catherine Denham
SEA ISLAND, GA (Feb. 5, 2008) - Sea Island is not only a great place to visit on vacation, it's also a great place to live, according to the editors of Travel + Leisure Golf who recently named Sea Island Resorts the country's premier golf community of 2008.

It was the second consecutive year Travel + Leisure Golf has designated Sea Island the top golf community in the U.S. Golf Digest named Sea Island the #1 golf resort in North America in December, 2006.

During the past 80 years, Sea Island has become renowned for providing the finest golf, resort and real estate experiences. Located on Georgia's southern coast, Sea Island is home to a legendary luxury resort that's been charming guests since 1928. Beyond the magnificence of Sea Island Resorts is an enviable community made up of three private clubs, two magnificent lodging facilities, The Cloister and The Lodge, and five top-rated golf courses, all part of Sea Island Company.

Accessible to guests staying at Sea Island Resorts, Sea Island Golf Club features the acclaimed Seaside, Plantation and Retreat courses amid some of the country's most scenic landscape. For even greater exclusivity, the private clubs and communities of Frederica and Ocean Forest each features its own world-class golf course.

Ocean Forest has been a perennial top 100 golf course since opening in 1995. The new, meticulously planned Frederica development features 18 holes designed by Tom Fazio, a network of interconnected waterways stocked with freshwater bass, a boathouse, guesthouse, swimming pool, tennis courts and a wood stork rookery, all reserved for property owners. Spotlighted by Travel + Leisure Golf, the low-density 3,000-acre Frederica development is a further testament to Sea Island's tradition of serving as a wise steward of the land for both present and future generations.

Centerpiece to Sea Island Resorts and its three golf courses is The Lodge, overlooking the St. Simons Sound and the Sea Island Golf Learning Center. Sea Island's Learning Center is the only facility in America to employ three of Golf Digest's top 50 teachers providing personalized instruction for all levels of players from high handicappers to attending PGA Tour players. A staff of top professionals develops comprehensive, multi-disciplined programs for each golfer, including club fitting, swing and short game analysis, mental approach, and golf fitness.

Opened in 2001, The Lodge provides an intimate 40-room respite for Sea Island Club golfers and guests. Surrounded by the lush Plantation and Seaside golf courses, the elegant English manor Lodge, named "Top Small Hotel" by Zagat Survey, is among the rare resorts to receive both the annual AAA Five-Diamond and Mobil Five-Star ratings during its first year of operation.

The Lodge's ethereal serenity, foreshadowed by the majestic Avenue of Oaks entrance, includes personal 24-hour butlers who welcome guests to the grace, quality and members' lifestyle that few experience, all in a resort setting. The Lodge first floor not only serves as the Sea Island Golf clubhouse, it is also home to the golf shop and must-see 10,000-square-foot men's locker room and rejuvenating spa services, impeccable dining venues at Colt & Alison, the Oak Room, and the Wine Cellar, which features 1,800 of the finest vintages, boutique wines and classic favorites.
