When Terranea opened in 2009, guests found that California's newest coastal destination resort resembled a carefully tended seaside estate evolved slowly and naturally over time. Every element grows out of the native coastal habitat and Mediterranean architectural heritage of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The resort's 102 oceanfront acres form part of Rancho Palos Verdes, an exclusive community just 20 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport. The location serves as a central gateway to all of Southern California's major attractions. However, few visitors want to leave the property.
Breathtaking ocean views dominate every aspect of the resort—from the lavish Spa at Terranea, to the swimming pools, luxuriously appointed guest rooms, dining venues, executive golf course, and all 75,000 square feet of outdoor event spaces. Indoors, 60,000 square feet of state-of-the-art meeting rooms focus on the ocean and coastal scenery as well. Managed by Destination Hotels & Resorts, Terranea promises warm, personalized service in keeping with the timeless appeal of California sun and sea.
The choice of accommodations include 360 rooms and suites, 20 two-bedroom bungalows, 50 one- to three-bedroom casitas, and 32 two-, three-, and four-bedroom villas. Private balconies overlook the lush gardens and pools, Pacific Ocean, and Catalina Island on the horizon. Ground floor terraces lead directly onto the grounds, just steps from the meeting spaces, restaurants, and recreational options—including two miles of hiking trails brimming with native California flora and fauna.

Mostly a great experience, and this year better by far than last year, but at times particularly when there are several conferences at once, it seems as if they are slightly understaffed.

One ten-year veteran sent me an email saying that in the ten years he's been at Microsoft, 'this was by far the best offsite—hands down. Logistically everything flowed smoothly.

It does not get any better than this meeting planners. I just hope by my sharing with you won't conflict with the times I plan to hold my conferences in this hotel. It seems they have figured it out very quickly on how to make every part of the experience perfect. The chef is a 15 out of a 10 rating. The views, staff, food - entire experience was a wow and better than great. I'd like to see some big improvements in the spa which I experienced more than once but it is a lovely spa with good treatments and therapists.

Posted 20 Dec, 2011 by Lucy Gonzalez
Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.- December 20, 2011- Terranea Resort is kicking off the New Year with Fun with Purpose, a new program that blends fitness with environmental responsibility. Over three Sundays in January, the resort's Pointe Discovery team will lead naturally inspired actitivies that keep guests active, while allowing them to do some good for the environment. Each Fun with Purpose activity features "teachable" moments about the Peninsula and is designed for both resort guests and local day visitors.
The Fun with Purpose activity schedule includes:
January 8th - Ocean Clean Up
Kayak Clean Up trips allow guests to expeirence the rich kelp beds, as well as marine environment. Kayak teams work together to clean up debris as they paddle along the coast. Fifty percent of the $89 fee will be donated to the Marine Mammal Care Center for continued research and rehabilitation of Sea Lions and Harbor Seals. Trip times: 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
January 15th- Discovery Trail Hike & Habitat Restoration
Guests will hike the resort's ocean front Discovery Trail and learn from naturalists about the unique habitat and the wildlife it supports. Terranea's recreation team will help make this hike a mixture of fitness, teachable moments, and fun. While the program is complimentary a $10 donation to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is strongly suggested. Hikes leave at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
January 22nd- Fidget's Freedom, A Falcon's Tale
Join Terranea's expert team of falconers and author Stacey Peterson as they bring her book Fidget's Freedom, the story of a young falcon, to life. After starting the morning off with story telling and a history lesson on local falconry, guests will get to enjoy a first hand falconry experience including a spectacular flying lesson. They will also learn how falconry is an eco-friendly, non-lethal solution to controlling the seagull population. Activities begin at 10 a.m. at Pointe Discovery. Complimentary.

Last of the Premier Southern California, Ocean Front Settings is Backdrop for 135,000 Square Feet of Spectacular Space with State-of-the-Art Technology
Terranea Resort is California's premier meeting and event destination. Opened June 12, 2009, the property fills a special niche by introducing a dramatic Southern California oceanfront location with state-of-the-art capabilities and luxury amenities for meeting and event planners, just 20 miles from Los Angeles International and Long Beach airports.
Picture-Perfect Meetings and Events
Featuring 60,000 square feet of indoor meeting and event space, many with views of the Pacific, Terranea offers 33 meeting rooms for social and business gatherings. The offerings include the 18,000-square-foot Palos Verdes Grand Ballroom; the 6,600-square-foot Marineland Ballroom; and the Catalina Room, a 4,300-square-foot multi-functional room with a sweeping view of the ocean and Catalina Island. The property also offers three boardrooms, two with fireplaces, and three large hospitality suites - all with panoramic ocean views and walk out terraces that can be reserved for additional entertaining or intimate meetings.
Breathtaking ocean views make each venue a one-of-a-kind location. Every detail of the resort has been carefully considered including outdoor terraces with dramatic vistas from many of the meeting rooms. The property features 15 convenient breakout rooms located on one level-many with ocean views and walkout ocean view terraces. The variety of meeting room sizes accommodates groups of any size. The Palos Verdes Grand Ballroom can be divided into as many as eight smaller venues, each featuring 23.5-foot high ceilings for creative multi-media presentations and elaborate meeting set-ups. The Marineland Ballroom may be divided into three smaller venues that feature 18-foot high ceilings. Generous foyer space with panoramic ocean views allows for elaborate receptions and refreshment breaks.
The outdoor spaces at Terranea are as thoughtfully developed as the indoor event spaces. A wide variety of outdoor venues adds another 75,000 square feet of wedding, social event and meeting space. Each of the nine outdoor locations offers a different ocean view and distinct location. The unique 16,000-square-foot oceanfront Palos Verdes Meadows is becoming a highly sought after venue for weddings, group functions or concerts.
Above & Beyond
Terranea sets the new standard in resort accommodations. The property boasts a 582-room resort including a 360-room hotel with 20 bungalows. Also available are 50 ocean front casitas and 32 detached ocean view villas tailored specifically to individuals looking for a more intimate setting.
The 360-room hotel also includes 32 suites. Accommodations range from an average 450-square-foot guest room, all with balconies, to the 1,800-square-foot Presidential Suite. The 20 two-bedroom bungalows will offer 1,642 square feet of comfort that can be locked off into two separate rooms. The 32 two- and three-bedroom villas are located in an ocean view enclave and range in size from 1,900 to 2,800 square feet. Nestled along the resort's east and west ocean bluffs are the 50 three-bedroom casitas, each capable of locking off in a combination of up to three separate rooms. Indoor and outdoor fireplaces in every casita and villa create a rare California coastal experience.
The bungalows, casitas and villas all provide alternative accommodations for guests and event planners looking for tranquil locations that boast all the amenities of a luxury resort.
Property Environment/Recreation
Terranea was designed to seamlessly nestle into the rolling oceanfront topography. The 102-acre, $475 million Mediterranean-style resort offers a host of amenities.
Terranea is home to a 9-hole par 3 golf course featuring a short course practice facility, and for those with more time, Trump National Golf Course is located just three miles away. Three unique swimming pools include the main 5,000 square-foot pool with a children's play area and 140-foot waterslide, and Cielo Point adult pool, located along the ocean bluff.
The Spa at Terranea is designed as a separate, stand-alone destination spa offering customized wellness treatments. With an unsurpassed oceanfront location, the 50,000-square-foot spa complex offers 25 treatment rooms. The spa also offers an adult-only pool with private cabanas, manicure/pedicure stations, hair and beauty salon services, an expansive retail outlet with custom spa products, separate men's and women's indoor and outdoor relaxation areas and a 5,000-square-foot fitness facility and yoga studio.
Eight dining venues offer a variety of food and beverage experiences including Catalina Kitchen a casual, all-day dining restaurant, mar'sel a free-standing signature restaurant, Nelson's a cliff-side bar with spectacular vantage points for whale watching, and various snack food outlets located throughout the property. Food and beverage is available at all pool locations including the Cielo Point pool bar and grill.
Other amenities include a children's center with interactive programs and nearly two miles of on-property scenic bluff-top trails. A secluded beach cove adds to the unique experiences at Terranea Resort.
Accessible Los Angeles County Location
Magnificently poised above the Pacific Ocean, the secluded and dramatic oceanfront setting is surrounded by acres of native coastal habitat. With its panoramic shoreline views spanning from east to the west, Terranea is one of the rare places where one can enjoy the sunrise and the sunset over the Pacific Ocean from a single vantage point. The property is located 20 miles from both Los Angeles International Airport and Long Beach Airport, 30 miles southwest of downtown LA and less than 45 minutes from many of the renowned sights, cultural, sport and entertainment attractions of Los Angeles and Orange County. Catalina Island is located 22 miles directly off the coast, easily accessed by ferry for day trips.
Connection to the Environment:
Terranea is committed to protecting the valuable coastal resources that define the Palos Verdes Peninsula and its environmental plan calls for sustainable measures to protect open space and improve wildlife habitat.
To protect and enhance local water quality, Terranea implemented a series of environmental best management practices that include wet ponds, Bioswales, catch basin inlets and storm filters. Bioswales are vegetated channels, essentially man-made wetlands, which enhance water quality and provide a habitat for many avian and aquatic species.
No land was removed from the area during the development of Terranea, and 80% of the materials from abandoned structures left behind by previous tenants were recycled and used in the site preparation of the new resort. Of the 102 acres of the site only 25% is covered by impervious surfaces, either building or paving. This leaves roughly 75 acres of "green space."

BREATHTAKING, LUXURIOUS OCEANFRONT TERRANEA RESORT OPENS JUNE 12 ALONG SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST: Possibly the Last Great Hotel to Be Built Right on the Pacific Ocean
Posted 12 Jun, 2009 by Concierge Elite
Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. - June 12, 2009 - Occupying 102 acres of irreplaceable coastline just 20 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport, Terranea Resort opens to the public on June 12.
Ten years and $480 million in the making, Terranea (terra-NAY-a) is the crowning achievement of Los Angeles-based owner/developer Lowe Enterprises and is managed by Destination Hotels & Resorts. The property's location will introduce a whole new generation to a part of Los Angeles that feels worlds away from the dynamic city, and to a beautiful and tranquil setting which is largely unknown. It has been decades since Marineland of the Pacific, located where Terranea now sits, brought visitors to this secluded peninsula.
"Visitors that round the last scenic coastal bend before Terranea are met with a breathtaking sight: an oceanfront Resort surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean with Catalina Island looming across the channel," said Charlie Peck, president and chief operation officer for Destination. "This location has to be one of Southern California's most striking vistas and we are honored to add this inspired Resort along the Pacific to our collection of properties."
Rancho Palos Verdes will again play host to people from far and near at Terranea's 360-room Hotel and luxurious collection of residential bungalows, casitas and villas. The property also features The Links at Terranea, a challenging 9-hole par 3 golf course, and The Spa at Terranea with 25 treatment rooms, three ocean view pools and a collection of eight distinctive restaurants, bars and lounges. Guests will recognize the views from many vantage points as the property has been the location of dozens of Hollywood films and televisions shows over the years.
Anticipating that the unparalleled views will propel Terranea to the top of the list for wedding, social or business gatherings, the property has 60,000 square feet of indoor meeting and event space highlighted by an 18,000 square foot ballroom, the largest ballroom on the California coast. The Resort also has expansive outdoor lawns, terraces, gardens, gazebos and event space, all designed to showcase the Pacific Ocean locale.
"Terranea is secluded and private, providing an oceanfront escape that feels far removed from hectic city life, yet is close for millions. Guests and owners will feel like they've been transported to a tranquil place that embodies the classic California lifestyle. The Terranea staff offers gracious, humble service - providing the kind of attentive service one associates with retreating to a safe, familiar, nurturing environment," said Terri A. Haack, executive vice president and managing director of the new Resort.
Terranea - Built With Care
California has developed a well-deserved reputation for protecting its natural treasures, like its scenic coastlines. With that in mind, Terranea was developed with environmental sensitivity across all aspects of its building and operations. The property is mindful that it might well be the last large resort built along the Southern California coast given the lack of large parcels left for development. That legacy factored into the care taken while transforming the site.
Examples of that care include the 45 stately trees on the site that date back over 50 years which were carefully boxed prior to construction, then replanted; the 14 acres of natural Coastal Sage Scrub habitat Terranea planted, re-creating the natural California coastal terrain; and a series of water quality systems throughout the property to treat and clean rain water runoff and help protect the ocean, including strategically planted areas that serve as "organic filters."
"Visitors will learn through our example that developments can provide access to irreplaceable land while safeguarding their beauty and nurturing the flora and fauna - all for the benefit of generations to come," said Haack. "It is part of our vision that people will come away from Terranea compelled to become caretakers with us of the land and the ocean that make Southern California one of the world's most desirable locales."
Other Resort amenities include a children's center with interactive programs and several miles of scenic bluff-top trails that connect miles of off-property coastal trails. A secluded beach cove also adds to the unique experiences at Terranea Resort.

The unique 16,000-square-foot oceanfront Palos Verdes Meadows will be a highly sought after venue for weddings, group functions or concerts.
Connection to the Environment
Terranea is committed to protecting the valuable coastal resources that define the Palos Verdes peninsula and its environmental plan calls for sustainable measures to protect open space and improve wildlife habitat.
To protect and enhance local water quality, Terranea is implementing a series of environmental best management practices that include wet ponds, Bioswales, catch basin inlets and storm filters. Bioswales are vegetated channels, essentially man-made wetlands, which enhance water quality and provide a habitat for many avian and aquatic species.
No land mass is being removed from the area during the development of Terranea, and 90% of the materials from abandoned structures left behind by previous tenants are being recycled and used in the site preparation of the new resort. Of the 102 acres of the site only 25% is covered by impervious surfaces, either building or paving. This leaves roughly 75 acres of "green space."
