February 14, 2009 - The Inn at Stonepine in Carmel Valley, California is pleased to announce it has joined Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and brand of Preferred Hotel Group.
The Inn at Stonepine is one of more than 220 hotels and resorts throughout the country that is recognized by Historic Hotels of America for preserving and maintaining its historic integrity, architecture and ambiance.
"The trend of cultural travel in America continues to grow," said Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. "By inviting The Inn at Stonepine into our collection of distinguished properties, we are continuing to encourage historic preservation while at the same time showcasing this hotel's rich history. Our goal is to bring these historically special hotels and their authentic experiences to the attention of the traveling public."
To be selected for membership in National Trust Historic Hotels, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or recognized locally as having historic significance.
The Inn at Stonepine is rich in history and architectural integrity. The estate was
originally built in 1929 by Helen Crocker Russell of the San Francisco banking family and her husband Henry Potter Russell of New York. Influenced by European architecture and constructed in the style of a Mediterranean villa, the estate was named the Double H Ranch. It included an equestrian center well known as the largest thoroughbred farm west of the Mississippi. Over the years it has been home to some of the world's finest horses including stakes winners Majestic Prince, Countess Nashville and Bolero Lady. The European-style gardens, which were awarded the coveted Garden of the Year Award in 1956 by the California Horticulture Society, were designed by Mrs. Russell between 1930 and 1932. They added the Italian stone pine saplings that now, over 75 years later, tower over the estate, inspiring its current name, Stonepine.
Purchased in 1983 by Gordon and Noel Hentschel, Stonepine is currently a 330-acre sophisticated country estate. The manor house, restored in 1987, is known today as Chateau Noel and offers eight luxury suites and living areas that exhibit the elegance and refinement found only in the choicest European hotels. Formal gardens contrast beautifully with ageless oak and olive trees. Pathways lead to expanses of manicured lawn, recreation areas and a 3- mile trail system for riding horses, hiking, and biking. Golf enthusiasts can practice on a four-hole course and chateau guests can relax by the Renaissance-formed swimming pool. The equestrian center continues its tradition as a premier Carmel Valley horse facility and offers lessons in Western and English riding, horse boarding, and trail rides.
The estate now includes four additional houses and cottages, each uniquely decorated and private. The Briar Rose is a two-bedroom cottage overlooking its own rose garden, a perfect romantic retreat. The Paddock House, adjacent to the equestrian center, is reminiscent of a country ranch house, complete with a large veranda and lawn. The three comfortable bedrooms can be booked separately or as a complete package. The Gate House, which in 1890 was the Carmel Valley schoolhouse, is now a mini-estate with five bedrooms, a private tennis court, pool, and entry. Conveniently located near Carmel Valley Road, it has served as the celebrity home for many of Hollywood's famous visitors to Stonepine. The Hermes House, perched on the bluff overlooking the equestrian center and the four-furlong racetrack, offers master and guest suites as well as generous living areas, including an outdoor Jacuzzi. In-room dining is available in each of the houses or cottages and a full complimentary European breakfast is included with each stay. Five-course gourmet dinners are served in the dining room of Chateau Noel to estate guests and dining club members with reservations. The Inn at Stonepine offers an extensive wine list, focusing on central California selections and our chef prides himself on using the freshest local produce available.

Normal package prices start at $1,000 per couple while these special rates start as low as $800. Special rates are also available at Chateau Noel based on a 3-suite minimum or an exclusive booking for the entire entire house. These accommodations include enjoyment of the private Chateau gardens and grounds as well as recreational amenities.
The Inn at Stonepine is located just east of Carmel Valley Village on Carmel Valley Road, 13 miles from scenic Highway 1 and only 25 minutes from the Monterey Airport. Travel from the airport is by rental car, chartered helicopter, or by Stonepine's Rolls Royce.
