CALISTOGA, CALIF. (July 7, 2008) " Recognizing the forward-thinking and
environmentally minded vision of Solage Calistoga, Hospitality Design magazine
has honored the resort with its 2008 award for Green Design. Solage and the
other winners of the 2008 HD Awards were selected from more than 400 entries by
a team of distinguished architecture and design industry leaders. The winners, in
categories ranging from resort and spa design to luxury hotel, were celebrated at
a recent ceremony in New York City and are featured in the current issue of the
magazine.
Solage Calistoga was conceived to prove that luxury, sustainability and
great design can happily coexist, said Mark Harmon, CEO and Managing Partner,
Auberge Resorts, the hotel developer and operator behind the new Solage brand.
We are fortunate to have worked with such talented partners as architect
Howard Backen and Dowling Kimm Studios to help us bring our vision for this
new breed of resort to life.
The first property from Auberge Resorts new Solage Hotels & Resorts
brand, the 89-room cottage-style resort and spa was designed by Backen to
maximize its valley setting and take advantage of natural heating and cooling
opportunities. Features such as solar panels and exaggerated eaves help
moderate temperatures on warm afternoons and minimize energy usage. Tall,
shaded windows and doorways offer views out to private gardens, filling spaces
with filtered sunlight and keeping interiors cool.
San Francisco design team Dowling Kimm Studios sourced contemporary
furnishings made from natural, sustainably farmed and recycled materials for
Solages earth-friendly interiors. Guestrooms feature walnut and beech furniture
manufactured with non-toxic varnishes and wool upholstery. Natural accents
include hemp curtains, wool throws, stone countertops and pebbled showers.
Public spaces and Spa Solage feature bamboo and reclaimed cedar, and interiors
throughout the resort are finished with non-toxic, low-VOC paints.
A member of the Green Hotels Association, Solage Calistoga proves that offering
guests a fun and luxurious getaway and sustainability go hand in hand. Making
innovative use of Calistogas famed hot springs as an alternative energy source,
the resort taps the geothermal springs deep beneath the property for radiant
energy to heat the treatment rooms and soaking pools at the 20,000-square-foot
Spa Solage.
From the use of bicycles for room service, alternative energy sources,
energy-efficient lighting, environmentally safe Method cleaning products to
locally sourced food, drought-resistant landscaping, recycling and water
reclamation, Solages philosophy of eco-consciousness is visible in all areas of
resort operation and encompass not only environmental stewardship but also the
personal health and well being of staff and guests.
