LITTLE ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. " Green Globe, a global benchmarking, certification and improvement program for sustainable travel and tourism, has awarded its Benchmarked Certificate to Little St. Simons Island. Little St. Simons Island is one of only two organizations in the United States that are listed on the Green Globe site. The other is the Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge in Alaska.
The Green Globe program addresses major environmental, social and economic issues that face our planet by focusing on key environmental and social impact areas. Participants must have a sustainability policy in place, and meet or exceed Earthcheck" Accommodation Performance Benchmarks. These benchmarks address seven areas including energy consumption, water consumption, waste production, community commitment, paper products, cleaning products, and pesticides. Two additional, optional benchmarks address habitat conservation and contributions to the local community.
Little St. Simons Island surpassed eight of the nine Earthcheck" benchmarks. Of those, seven are at or above the Best Practices level, an achievement to be highly commended according to Green Globe.
Were extremely pleased to achieve Benchmark Certification with Green Globe, said Joel Meyer, Little St. Simons Island General Manager. Sustainable travel and tourism have been recognized by the World Travel Council and other organizations as being critical to the health of our planet. This goal meshes perfectly with our corporate goals and objectives for Little St. Simons Island, namely to provide the highest level of guest enjoyment and appreciation for the environment while protecting and preserving its resources.
Benchmark Certification, which must be renewed annually, is the next-to-last step toward achieving full Green Globe certification, the highest level of Green Globe qualification. Certified organizations must have an integrated Environmental Management System in place, successfully meet Earthcheck" benchmarks, and pass an independent on-site assessment. Meyer says he is hoping for Little St. Simons Island to achieve full Green Globe certification within the year.
Green Globe works with travel and tourism companies and communities throughout the world to maintain good environmental and social practices, deliver maximum benefit to all interested parties and provide choice for concerned consumers. Travel and tourism companies, communities, ecotourism products and development projects participating in the Green Globe program are located in 58 countries worldwide and represent most sectors of the travel and tourism industry. Privately owned and operated, Little St. Simons Island is a 10,000-acre barrier island accessible only by boat. The Lodge on Little St. Simons offers accommodations for up to 30 guests, who enjoy the islands unspoiled tranquility amidst an atmosphere of rustic elegance. Activities encourage enjoyment of the outdoors and include tours and programs with staff naturalists, horseback riding, bicycling, beach walks, fishing, canoeing, birding or simple relaxation.
