No phones, radios, or televisions disrupt the peace at Kona Village Resort. Known as Hawii’s most authentic Hawaiian resort, the village stretches along the Big Island’s sunny Kona-Kohala coastline. Today, where an ancient fishing village once thrived, guests hide away in 125 South Seas bungalows on 82 acres of lush greenery, quiet lagoons, and black-and-white-sand beaches. Offshore, the waters of Kahuwai Bay teem with sea life, everything from whales, dolphins, and manta rays to endangered green sea turtles.

The accent on privacy appeals to honeymooners, families, and small executive groups alike. The pristine, unplugged environment fosters a new sense of connection, adventure, and possibility. While barefoot meetings and parties convene on the Kahua Lawn, Kipukai Beach, and in the Hale Ho’okipa and Hale Samoa, team-building programs focus on the Hawaiian values of courage, responsibility, resourcefulness, and teamwork that led the original voyagers to the islands. Outrigger canoe racing, deep-sea fishing, and culturally based fitness programs play a part in many a corporation’s agenda.

Hawaii’s only full American plan covers three island-inspired meals a day—including a twice-weekly luau—most ocean equipment, round-robin tennis and clinics, free access to the fitness center, a daily children’s program, and historical and cultural tours. Premium rewards on hand range from spa treatments to scuba diving to championship play at the Jack Nicklaus–designed Hualalai Golf Course next door.

KONA VILLAGE EXPANDS BEYOND THE BAY WITH ALAKA'I NALU OCEAN ACTIVITIES

Ka'upulehu, Big Island, Hawai`i .08.17.09 ~ At dawn, the Kona Village dive boats slides quietly out of the bay with divers anxious to explore the ocean's depths. Paddleboards with their oars stand at attention, soon to break the glassy surface of Kahuwai Bay. Snorkelers take advantage of the morning calm to peek beneath the surface to the colorful world below. At the Shipwreck Pool, a guest learns to scuba dive. As the morning progresses, a group departs from the shoreline to have some fun with DPV (dive propulsion vehicles) scooter snorkeling. As the day warms and ocean breezes increase, stand-up paddleboards are exchanged for windsurf boards and Sunfish sailboats. Children play in the sand and run into the gentle waves that lap the shore. And everywhere are the Alakai Nalu.

In a nod to its oceanfront setting at the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village, Kona Village and Hualalai Resort have developed a comprehensive program called Alaka'i Nalu with all-things-water at the program's core. Alaka'i Nalu means "ambassadors of the waves" in the Hawaiian language.

Alaka'i Nalu offerings at Kahuwai Bay include an Outrigger Canoe Program so guests may learn to paddle a canoe, Hawaiian-style. Alaka'i crew share the historical significance of canoes in context to the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. After a lesson on a six-man canoe, guests are able to use one and two-man outrigger canoes complimentary for the remainder of their stay.

Other Alaka'i Nalu activities include Wiwo'ole Ribcraft Adventures for seasonal whale watching or cruises to hidden snorkeling sites. Scooters (dive propulsion vehicles), stand-up paddleboards, spear fishing and deep sea fishing are offered. As a PADI certified resort, SCUBA dives, instruction and certification programs add to the many offerings at this oceanfront location on the Kona-Kohala coast of Hawaii's Big Island.

The Junior Alaka'i Nalu program is a three day program that abides by the values of Alaka'iNalu. Daily activities may include standup paddleboards, windsurfing, free diving, zodiac boat captain, outrigger canoe paddling, sailing, scooter snorkeling, scuba diving and shoreline fishing. The program is exclusively tailored for ages 13 to 17 and includes three, five-hour sessions.

"Kona Village considers the staff to have a much bigger role than just teaching people how to surf," explains general manager Ulrich Krauer. "Alaka'i Nalu staff impart their knowledge. They teach ancient and modern activities, they share Hawaii's connection with the water around us, and they help guests develop a deeper respect for the ocean."

Among complimentary water activities offered at Kona Village, snorkeling in the pristine waters of Kahuwai Bay is the most popular. But there are also boogie boards, keiki (children) surfboards, kayaks and keiki fishing poles for catch-and-release fun on the edge of the resort's ancient Hawaiian fishponds.

Book a new reservation* at Kona Village by September 15, 2009 for stays between now and December 18, 2009 and receive complimentary Standup Paddleboard lesson and use during your stay. There is some availability for Kona Village's thatched-roof bungalows over the popular Thanksgiving holiday season and the minimum night restriction has been waived.
