The Jumeirah Essex House first opened its gilded doors in 1931 and still reigns as a symbol of luxury living on New York City’s Central Park South. Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts bought the art deco landmark in 2005, and then spent $90 million on restorations and updating over the next two years.
Today’s 509 guest rooms and suites share the building with apartments owned by a host of A-list celebrities. Art-deco styling joins technological wonders like touch-screen panels to set lighting moods and background music.
“Smart” technology extends to the meeting space, including the magnificently restored Grand Salon and adjoining Petit Salon, and 14 other richly decorated function rooms. Many bask in natural light, and most frame views of Central Park. Private dining for 20 to 100 guests highlights the new South Gate restaurant along with seasonally inspired cuisine by Chef Kerry Heffernan.
With talent and venues like this, plus all of Central Park for a front yard—and Broadway’s theaters, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, major museums, and Fifth Avenue shopping within easy walking distance—the hotel continues to play a central role in the social, cultural, and economic life of the city. The building’s stature, location, and history make it one of Manhattan’s best-known landmarks. Inside, Jumeirah blends ‘30s elegance with the ultimate in modern-day comfort and convenience.
