A well-loved national landmark, Hotel del Coronado rests on Coronado Island, a bridge away from downtown San Diego, California. More than 120 years of headline events and luminaries highlight the resort's meeting history. And yet today's groups experience the seaside legend at its peak. Thoughtful updates over the years have kept the resort at the top of its game.

The most recent investment restored the Victorian-era details, renovated 757 guest rooms, updated ten bars and restaurants, and added an enclave of 78 superdeluxe cottages and villas known as Beach Village at The Del. A world-class spa, fitness center, shops, and open air Sunset Bar—complete with fire pits and live entertainment—simply solidified The Del's reputation as a luxury leader in the world of contemporary travel.

Long a top choice for corporate events in San Diego, the hotel offers 65,000 square feet of interior meeting space, in addition to exterior and beachfront venues. The selection ranges from the historic Crown Room—with chandeliers designed by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum—to the contemporary Grande Hall—and numerous breakout rooms on the lower level.

Behind the scenes, the conference staff works tirelessly to ensure seamless events, whether a board meeting, corporate assembly, beach party, fiesta, or theme party complete with celebrity look-alikes. From arrival to departure, San Diego's storybook castle combines the timeless appeal of a true American classic and the modern amenities required by groups of every description.

Property is in a great location, but the service staff made many mistakes and were not helpful - sometimes, downright rude!

Although hotel is beautiful, I would not take another program back there.

GREEN SEAL CERTIFICATION
Posted 27 Oct, 2011 by Aldo Boccaccio
HOTEL DEL CORONADO OLDEST HOTEL IN U.S. TO RECEIVE
GREEN SEAL CERTIFICATION

Coronado, CA — Established in 1888, the legendary Hotel del Coronado has achieved another milestone by being the oldest hotel in the U.S. to receive Bronze Level certification by Green Seal. In accordance to Green Seal’s environmental management system, The Del has made significant progress against the four pillars: climate change, waste, natural resources and health and wellbeing – achieving higher stands of care and stewardship for the environment, while delivering exceptional guest service. “The entire staff embraced a culture of environmental responsibility, which supported our efforts to overcome the challenges associated with being a 123-year-old property,” says Donna Gonser, Hotel Manager.

Changes We’ve Made
Paper, cardboard, wood pallets, plastic containers, aluminum cans and glass are separated and recycled resort-wide. The Del also recently replaced all of its outdoor trash cans with dual-use receptacles: one side for recyclables and the other for non-recyclable trash. Fry oil is also recycled and used in the production of biofuels. In addition, a wide range of materials, including 75 tons of green waste, is recycled annually. Batteries, florescent lights, computers and other items that require special handling are discarded appropriately to keep these items out of landfills.

The hotel has completed the retrofit of every guestroom to energy-efficient compact florescent lights, saving over 640,000 kilowatts of power on an annual basis and has implemented a state-of-the-art energy management system that controls the heating, ventilation and air–conditioning and a majority of the property’s lighting. Most guestrooms feature ceiling fans to help cut back on air conditioning usage.

The Del’s irrigation systems have state-of-the-art programmers and the sprinklers all have low-flow, high efficiency heads. The resort works with a leading pest control company to reduce the use of chemicals for pest and weed control.

Specific departments within The Del practice ‘green’ whenever they can. For example, the culinary team promotes local farmers and fishermen as much as possible. It also utilizes an on-site herb garden for fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs and takes steps to control and minimize food waste for all meals and functions. The Housekeeping department utilizes vacuum cleaners specifically designed by the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) to reduce indoor air pollutants. And, the department’s basic chemical package is Green Seal Certified. The resort has kept leftover soap and bottled amenities out of landfills and prevented contamination of ground water by donating them to “Clean the World”, an organization that recycles and distributes these items to impoverished people world-wide. Discarded linens are converted into cleaning rags and cook aprons by A&E Textile Recovery Inc. Also, the operating hours of the laundry start very early in the morning in order to save energy costs. The Del’s Marketing department uses soy inks and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper when creating resort collateral. A Sustainability Steering Committee, involving staff from all departments, meets regularly to evaluate current programs and to discuss recommendations for moving the hotel forward.

Guest Involvement
Management also recognizes that guests have a role in the conservation efforts. Therefore, guests are encouraged to minimize water and energy consumption by refraining from having towels, sheets, etc. changed every day helping to reduce water consumption. We have estimated an annual water reduction of over 663,000 gallons with this cooperative program. Guests are also reminded to turn off air conditioning and lighting when not in the room.

“Conservation and environmental responsibility is everyone’s business,” says Gonser. “We are so proud that we’ve achieved our goal of being certified by Green Seal. We are always looking at new and innovative ways to improve these important and vital practices.”

About Green Seal
The Green Seal Standard for Hotels and Lodging Properties, GS-33, is one of the most robust environmental standards in the hospitality industry. In order to receive certification, a hotel must meet and adhere to stringent standards. These include requirements in waste management, energy efficiency, water conservation, wastewater management and green procurement. A certified property’s records, processes and procedures are evaluated and an on-site audit of the property is conducted. Certified hotels submit to annual monitoring to assure continued compliance. CORONADO NAMED THE #2 BEST BEACH IN AMERICA

Coronado, CA — Soft sand under your feet, a touch of salt in the air, and the sound of pounding surf are what the best beaches in the U.S. are all about. USA Today and other national media announced “Dr. Beach’s” annual picks for the best beaches in May 2011, and Coronado was named No. 2 in America. "Dr. Beach" — also known as Stephen Leatherman, director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research — uses 50 criteria in selecting the best beaches, including water and sand quality, facilities and environmental management.

Additional beaches in the top 10 include: Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, FL; Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki, HI; Main Beach, East Hampton, NY; Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, NC; St. George Island State Park, FL; Beachwalker, Kiawah Island, SC; Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, MA; Waimanalo Bay State Park, Oahu, HI and Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne, FL.

Coronado’s expansive white sand and endless sunshine make it the perfect spot for adventures for all ages. The sprawling shoreline is great for jogging or walking along the Pacific. Coronado’s generally small waves are perfect for learning to surf or boogie board. And the Coronado bike trail, which runs along Glorietta Bay and the beachfront walk, is safe, easy to navigate and beautiful year-round.

The Hotel del Coronado, the Victorian masterpiece that is the centerpiece of Coronado Island, takes full advantage of its breathtaking oceanfront location. Surfing classes and beach rentals are available year-round. Get cozy around a fire pit and roast delicious s’mores with packages available for couples and families. Bikes for all ages, surreys and deuce coupes are also available for rent. The Recreation Department offers the Coronado on Wheels Bike Tour, a two-hour guided tour of historic Coronado. The Del’s fitness instructors teach fun classes such as core strengthening, total body conditioning and yoga. Kidtopia camp includes bonfires, s’mores roasts, seashore scavenger hunts, sandcastle competitions, beachfront kite flying and more. With all of these great activities in a spectacular setting, it’s no wonder that families return year after year to play at The Del.

Kids Rule At The Hotel Del Coronado
Posted 13 Jan, 2009 by Andrea Cunningham
CORONADO, CA - At the Hotel del Coronado, having fun - and lots of it - is a year-round activity for the entire family. While parents pamper themselves, children of all ages are entertained with fully supervised activities that are fun and educational. The 28-acre resort, Southern California's only oceanfront hotel, is a children's paradise. There are lush gardens, a nearby marina, two pools and a full-time Activities Department to cater to every child's whim.

Tent City was developed in 1900 to offer visitors an affordable option during the summer. Much of Coronado's social life centered around Tent City where hotel guests and local residents enjoyed recreational activities, concerts, plays and vaudeville shows. Some Like It Hot Filmed At The Hotel Del Coronado
Posted 13 Jan, 2009 by Andrea Cunningham
Coronado, CA - Regarded by many as one of the finest movies ever made - the American Film Institute named it "Number One" on their list of the 100 best comedies of all time - Some Like It Hot continues to delight audiences nearly fifty years later.

Filmed in 1958 and released in 1959, the United Artists' movie was shot on location at the Hotel del Coronado, Southern California's landmark seaside resort. The Del's spectacular Victorian architecture made a perfect backdrop for the film's 1929 setting, sharing the billing with Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis.

The Plot - The Prohibition-era story follows the exploits of Lemmon and Curtis, out-of-work musicians who accidentally witness Chicago's "St. Valentine's Day Massacre." In a run for their lives, the men disguise themselves as women and join an all-girls' band traveling by train to Florida. Here the ukulele-strumming singer, played by Monroe, catches the eyes of both men, but it is Curtis' character who assumes still another identity to successfully woo and win Monroe (he reinvents himself as an unlucky-in-love millionaire).

Lemmon's female character, meanwhile, is vigorously pursued by a bona fide millionaire, played by Joe E. Brown. The hilarious gender-shifting romantic romp is played out at California's famed Hotel del Coronado, which director Billy Wilder "moved" to Florida for the sake of the story line.

The now 120-year-old resort, which had come of age at the turn of the century, had endured some tough times during the Depression (when luxury travel waned) and during World War II (when San Diego military were housed at The Del). The post-war years were also difficult for The Del, as Americans looked ahead and embraced all that was new, including drive-in restaurants, drive-in movies, and car-friendly motels (the newly coined term for "motor hotels"). In the process, business dropped off, and the upkeep of the hotel suffered.

Fortunately, however, this period of benign neglect froze The Del in time, making it the perfect setting for Wilder's 1929 story, which he co-wrote with I.A. Diamond. Said Wilder, "We looked far and wide, but this was the only place we could find that hasn't changed in thirty years. People who have never seen this beautiful hotel will never believe we didn't make these scenes on a movie lot. It's like the past come to life."

In fact, one critic didn't believe it - he described The Del as "an uproariously improbable set." The hotel's Queen Anne Revival-style architecture (it was built in 1887 and opened in 1888) does tend toward the fanciful with its rambling white clapboard, lazy verandas, and red-turreted roofs. In fact, a 1931 writer produced his own "improbable" description when he characterized the Hotel del Coronado as a cross between an ornate wedding cake and a well-trimmed ship.

Much like The Del itself - which was designed as it was being built (and opened after only eleven months of construction) - Some Like It Hot was being written - and rewritten - as it was being filmed.

By almost everyone's account, Monroe was very difficult to work with throughout the film's production - her tardiness and inability to remember her lines have become legendary. Interestingly, however, quite a few reports confirm that Monroe was "on her mettle" during the entire Coronado portion of filming. Director Wilder believes that Monroe was inspired at The Del because spectators were plentiful, and she preferred a live audience.

The interior scenes look very Del-like (except that the real hotel lobby boasts vintage paneling and in the movie, the set is painted white); in reality, only exterior scenes were filmed at The Del. But, the rickety rockers on the hotel's front porch - they were the real thing.

Although the Hotel del Coronado setting does dominate the film, the cast and crew were only at The Del for a week or so in September 1958.

The movie was a box office success, grossing over $8 million initially and earning several million more over the next few years - somewhere between $10 and $15 million.

Monroe's financial deal - she received between $100,000 and $300,000, as well as ten percent of the film's gross profits - was a very lucrative arrangement in its day, and it was her most profitable venture.

The movie was also a critical success. Variety called it the biggest hit of 1959; Monroe received a Golden Globe for her performance, as did Jack Lemmon. The film itself also won a Golden Globe for "best comedy."

In spite of its financial success and public accolades, the film received only one minor Academy Award (for "Best Black and White Costume Design"). Today it is thought that Some Like It Hot was just too risqu for 1959. (The big winner that year was Ben-Hur. Also in the running for various Academy Awards in 1959 were Diary of Anne Frank, Room at the Top, Pillow Talk, and Porgy and Bess.)

The Some Like It Hot story line is racy, and Monroe's costumes are incredibly revealing (even by today's standards). Ahead of its time perhaps, present-day reviewers marvel that the movie still comes across as such a wholesome film; this was Monroe's forte: she was sexy, but childlike.

Although this is the Monroe film most shown on television today, the actress reportedly never liked her performance.

Writers Wilder and Diamond were inspired by another cross-dressing comedy, the 1932 German musical Fanfare of Love. They deliberately set the story in the past because, as Diamond put it, "When all the costumes look peculiar to us, a guy in drag looks no more peculiar than anybody else."

At one point, the movie was considered as vehicle for Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, and Mitzi Gaynor.

The film was shot in black and white because Wilder thought that male actors - in full female make-up - would look too ridiculous in color. The black-and-white format, which also suited the period style of the film, did not appeal at all to Monroe, who felt it didn't make the most of her peaches-and-cream, platinum blonde coloring. Interestingly, today Wilder (who chose to make many of his movies in black and white) says Some Like It Hot is the one movie he thinks would have benefited from being in color.

Wilder hired someone to teach Lemmon and Curtis how to walk in high heels, but Lemmon refused the help - he didn't want his character to be that adept as a woman.

Monroe's character, "Sugar Kane" is supposed to be 25 years old; Monroe was 32 when the movie was made.

Although Monroe and Curtis never worked with Billy Wilder again, Jack Lemmon made four more movies with him.

At one of the previews, the first shot of Lemmon and Curtis dressed as women was such a crowd-pleaser that Wilder added in every other shot he had for that scene. If you look carefully, you might see them walking by the same railroad car again and again. In addition, Wilder deliberately didn't show the characters as they transformed themselves from men to women. He knew the comic impact would be greater if audiences were introduced to "the ladies" all at once.

Supposedly Monroe's entrance, also at the train station - ducking the steam blasts - was her idea.

The film clearly shows The Del's original two front entrances. In 1888, as was the fashion, the hotel offered a combined men's and women's entrance and a separate "unescorted" women's entrance, which offered women, who were traveling alone, a discreet way to check in. This also afforded women a way to "freshen up" while their companions checked in for them. Today, only one hotel entrance remains.

In the scene where Curtis and Monroe run out to the yacht, it is supposed to be night, but it's not dark. Apparently, Monroe's frequent tardiness made it impossible to shoot that scene at night.

In the role of gangster Spats Colombo, George Raft parodies the gangster role he played in the 1932 film Scarface - in that film, his character repeatedly flipped a coin. In Some Like It Hot, Spats Colombo is very irritated when he sees someone else flipping a coin, demanding, "Where did you pick up that cheap trick?" Raft, who did not accompany the cast to Coronado, was at The Del in 1936 during the filming of Yours For the Asking.

When Lemmon's female character is telling Curtis' male character about his engagement to a real millionaire, he punctuates every line with a flourish of maracas. Wilder anticipated the scene being so successfully funny that he wanted to allow "space" for the audience laughter, and the maracas were added to "stretch out" the scene.

There are two scenes that supposedly gave Monroe the most trouble. The scene where she knocks on the door and says, "It's me, Sugar" required 47 takes. Another scene, where Monroe had to rummage through a dresser drawer for some bourbon, proved even more challenging, requiring 59 takes. And, Wilder claims that after he put the cue inside one of the dresser drawers, Monroe couldn't remember what drawer it was in.

The last line - uttered by Joe E. Brown when he says to Jack Lemmon, "Nobody's perfect" - was never intended to remain the last line, but Wilder and Diamond couldn't come up with anything they liked better, so it stayed. Ironically, it has become a classic last line.

In some publicity photos, Monroe just doesn't look like herself. That's because it isn't always her - sometimes a double (who also played one of the girls in the band) stood in for Monroe.

Hotel Del Coronado Unveils A $2 Million Meeting Rooms Renovation
Posted 13 Jan, 2009 by Andrea Cunningham
Coronado, CA -The legendary Hotel del Coronado unveiled a dramatic $2 million renovation of its meeting rooms in September. Interior designers Looney and Associates from Chicago gave each venue a new, fresh look. New plush carpets were designed for all areas, emphasizing brighter colors and larger-scaled designs. They also selected new paint and wall-coverings to brighten the space and give it an updated appearance. Significant architectural updates were performed on the ceiling to help underline the new clean, fresh feel.

In the Victorian Oceanfront Ballroom, the designers worked with the "rotunda" shape of the room to create a more interesting carpet design, as seen in the center of the room with a round "bouquet" of flowers. The designers researched and modified traditional Victorian patterns to become cleaner, more contemporary versions. The color palette reflects the environmental seaside surroundings, with blues and greens on top of a subtle, textured background. The paint colors, wall-coverings and draperies represent a light, fresh and neutral color palette. The Oceanfront Ballroom is 12,567 square feet and can accommodate large groups up to 1,110 in theater-style seating and 720 in banquet-style seating.

In the California Cabanas meeting rooms, the carpet designs emphasize brighter colors and larger scale-motifs. The carpet backgrounds in these smaller rooms are reminiscent of the Victorian Oceanfront Ballroom, but have a more playful and contemporary overlay to suit this modern venue. The art selected is reflective of the carpet design: bright and lively, pulling some blue and green hues from the carpet and again recalling the beautiful oceanfront surroundings. The California Cabanas Building has a total of eleven meeting rooms varying in size from 363 square feet to 3,974 square feet.

In Grande Hall, bright reds contrasted with greens and blues characterize the carpet palettes, with large-scale pattern overlays. This carpet has a traditional element at its border, with a more contemporary flower pattern in the middle, much like the California Cabanas meeting rooms. New bright and contemporary art, located on a neutral textured wall-covering, quickly gave this area a new look. The Grande Hall entrance unfolds to the staircase with a bold and pronounced inset rug and a large-scaled, antiqued mirror to add a feeling of glamour. Upstairs in the ballrooms, custom-designed chandeliers fill the large ceilings with elegant, bowl-shaped bodies and gold-leaf mica finish. The pre-function area was updated with new furniture, mirrors and dramatic art as well. Grande Hall is nearly 11,000 square feet and can accommodate groups up to 1,288 in theater-style seating and 920 in banquet-style seating.

Located on 28 oceanfront acres and offering 65,000 square feet of event space, the Hotel del Coronado is San Diego's premier meeting resort. With indoor, outdoor and oceanfront facilities, combined with an elegant Victorian ambiance, superb cuisine and friendly service, The Del provides a wonderful setting for corporate meetings, conferences, corporate retreats, teambuilding programs and workshops. The Del's distinctive San Diego conference rooms and meeting facilities offer spectacular views, inspire creativity, entertain, reward and impress corporate associates and clients alike.
