Three rivers —tres ríos—meet the Caribbean Sea at Tres Ríos Nature Park , a popular 326-acre eco-reserve on Mexico’s Riviera Maya established in 2001. Late last year, Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort Spa & Nature Park opened its arms to guests, affording incentive groups an exhilarating blend of meetings, nature, culture, and creature comforts.
The 273 accommodations evoke Mexican haciendas while incorporating the same reverence for nature seen in all aspects of the park. Some guest rooms come with Jacuzzis, and all feature local-mahogany furnishings, marble floors, fine linens, and living areas with sofa beds. The all-inclusive policy covers 24-hour room service as well as food and beverage at four gourmet restaurants, buffet restaurant, poolside snack bars, sports bar, a martini terrace, patisserie, and brick-oven pizzeria.
Guests enjoy nightly entertainment, daily directed activities, swimming and kayaking in the freshwater rivers and swimming holes (snorkel included), and access to the fitness center at Ya’ax Ché Spa. Also on tap: a wide array of spa treatments, plus nearby yachting, fishing, scuba diving, horseback riding. Team-building activities take place in the nature park.
Groups gather in a new 500-seat ballroom equipped with dividing walls, a banquet kitchen, and a state-of-the-art stage. Like all facilities on the property, the meeting space rests on pilings to allow for an uninterrupted flow of water to the sea.
Average Rating: 9.50
One of a kind resort. Only 5 miles from Playa de Carmen, yet felt like it was isolated. Staff made everyone feel very special and did a fantastic job of organizing our meeting and banquet. They did not charge for every little item. This was a stress free trip as a coordinator. They took care of everything with great efficiency. Their audio/visiaul employee was the best I have encountered at any resort. All feedback from guests were \"This is the most relaxed trip we have ever had\".
The nature park is a real plus with swimming in the cenotes. A wonderous experience.
This resort is truly an \"All-Inclusive\" Resort. Absolutely everything is included, tip, etc. Even the minifridge is stocked daily. You are treated like royalty and the rooms are beautiful. The resort is exactly like the pictures on the website.
We will definately return to this resort and I would recommend.

What a fantastic property! The hotel staff members were fantastic to work with on site and everything exceeded my expectations. My attendees loved the unique complementary activities, specifically the cenote snorkeling and kayak tours on property. It was very refreshing to see a resort property in Mexico so concerned with the environment, sustainable tourism, and "green" practices ... bravo!

Perspective magazine Editor Matt McDaniel represented Perspective International at the 2009 World Travel Awards' North and Central America regional ceremony, held September 21, 2009 at Hacienda Tres Rios, an all-inclusive luxury resort in Mexico's Riviera Maya.
The World Travel Awards (WTA), described as the Oscars of the global travel and tourism industry, acknowledge the "best of the best" out of more than 500 nominees. The event was held in partnership with Hacienda Tres Rios, Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau, Yucatan Holidays, Yucatan Travel, RCI and Vive Mexico. Luminaries attending the event included Mexico Secretary of Tourism Sara Latife Ruiz Chavez, who also serves as governor of the state of Quintana Roo.
The host resort had been nominated for recognition in several categories and proved its world-class status, taking the top nod as Mexico & Central America's Leading Green Hotel and Mexico and Central America's Leading All-Inclusive Resort.
Opened in November 2008, Hacienda Tres Ríos is the first resort of five at Tres Ríos. Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort boasts 273 suites featuring native materials and offering breathtaking views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
While it is easy to see why Hacienda Tres Rios was named top all-inclusive, the elements that make an exceptional green operation blend seamlessly into the guest experience, striking a delicate balance of luxury holidays and conservation. This eco-luxury resort, located in a nature preserve, was constructed as part of a master plan that included more than two years of comprehensive environmental studies. The architectural design was based on rigorous environmental criteria and the buildings were placed on areas of lower environmental value. What's more, in 2006 the Mexican government recognized Hacienda Tres Rios as a "regional and national model for sustainable tourism development."
Feature-length articles appearing in the October editions of Perspective International Ltd's publications, Perspective and Owners Perspective, further describe eco-luxury master plan at Tres Rios resort, detail the criteria for recognition by the WTA and how it benefits the traveling public, and provide a list of additional winners.

HACIENDA TRES RIOS RESORT, SPA AND NATURE PARK RECEIVES GREEN GLOBE CERTIFICATION

Luxury Riviera Maya Resort Receives Recognition for its Environmental and Sustainable Tourism Practices from Green Globe Certification Program
Green Globe International is pleased to announce that Hacienda Tres Rios, a pioneer of luxury eco-friendly resort practices in the Riviera Maya, has achieved certification under the Green Globe Certification program. The program identifies compliance internationally accepted green, sustainability standards for tourism properties and businesses.
The newly opened Hacienda Tres Rios has been recognized as a model for sustainable tourism by the Mexican government. The resorts commitment to sustainable best practices began years before construction and has extended through the construction phase to setting new standards for resource conservation and optimal environmental management. The resort utilizes on-site desalinization systems that enable them to pull saltwater from deep underground for resort water needs. This water is so cold it can be used to naturally pre-chill the air conditioning system, reducing electricity use and costs 38 percent. Heat emanated from the air conditioning systems is captured and used to heat guest hot water saving an additional 75 percent in natural gas usage and fees. And because of the on-site desalinization, the resort does not make use of the fresh water aquifer, protecting an increasingly scare resource in the world.
Hacienda Tres Rios is razor-focused on the enduring, intelligent and responsible use of the properties three distinct eco-systems, said Guido Bauer, VP of Global Sales for Green Globe International, Inc. Its truly remarkable to see a luxury beach resort with such high standards for carefully managing resources from its 120 plant species and 90 animal species to employee training and programs that benefit indigenous cultures.
Tres Rios began as a nature park and we've been extremely diligent in ensuring we follow our set new standards for protecting the extraordinary beauty and diversity of the area so our guests can reconnect with nature while they enjoy luxury Mexican hospitality, said Hacienda Tres Rios CEO Orlando Arroyo. We have worked hard to be recognized for our sustainability practices and are thrilled to be certified by the Green Globe Certification program.
For more information on Hacienda Tres Rios, please visit www.haciendatresRios.com.
The Green Globe brand and program, which traces its roots back to the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, where 182 Heads of State endorsed the Agenda 21 principles of Sustainable Development, has primarily been used in the travel and tourism industry but is now being expanded to include a growing number of environmentally responsible businesses in a variety of market sectors. The Green Globe brand is an ideal symbol for the world's increasing awareness of environmental responsibility and response to global climate change.

Environmental FACTSHEET

Office of the Chief Environmental Officer. July, 2008
I. Tres Rios Resort
The Tres Ros Resort, located in the Mexican Riviera Maya, opened to the public as a well-known private ecotourism park at the end of the 1990s. However, from the very beginning, the Tres Ros Master Plan was conceived as an integral project involving the sustainable development of over 1,700 rooms distributed amongst hotels and homes, as well as a marina and the ecotourism park.
The Hotel Hacienda is the first one to be built within Tres Ros and, just like the rest of the projects components, inherits the parks philosophy of achieving an environmentally sustainable development through the intelligent and responsible use of our ecosystems and natural resources.
II. What Distinguishes Tres Rios on Sustainable Development?
Tres Ros is unique because it combines the quality and experiences of a luxury resort with a strict conservation of the environment. This balance is otherwise difficult to achieve and still hard to find in the current tourism market.
Having begun as an ecotourism park, the Tres Ros concept is based on sound environmental principles that are consistently applied to all the elements of the Master Plan, from the initial design phases through construction and all the way through the hotel operation.
The Tres Rios model of Sustainable Tourism Development clearly distinguishes us from other hotels and resorts. Establishing a clear set of environmental criteria to guide the design of the hotel allowed us to clearly identify the proper technologies and actions required to both develop the resort and protect the environment. Thus, Tres Ros has invested in infrastructure, equipment and environmental management tools that have positioned us as model for sustainable tourism development.
An example of this is the technology applied to elevate the efficiency of the hotels air-conditioning system, which is traditionally one of the main consumers of energy in any building. We start by pumping cold water from a deep well through the air conditioning system in order to optimize chilling and reduce the energy required to cool the air circulating in the hotel. Then, a heat-exchange system draws and captures the heat emitted by the air conditioning equipment, using it to heat all the hot water in the hotel. The heat exchangers heat the water up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40c), minimizing the use of traditional water heaters and drastically reducing the use of energy needed to reach the 122 F (50c) required in the hotels hot water system.
In addition, a significant investment was made to install a titanium-clad water desalination plant which will treat and filter saltwater to produce all of the water consumed by the hotel. In this way we will completely avoid using and impacting the freshwater aquifer. This is an important commitment that we have made to help in one of our worlds most important environmental issues: the overuse of the planets freshwater aquifers.
III. The Tres Rios Sustainable Development Mission
Our Mission is to be a leading model for sustainable luxury tourism in the Mexican Caribbean, guarantying the enduring, intelligent and responsible use of our jungle, mangrove, dune and marine ecosystems. We seek to ensure the long-term preservation of these ecosystems functions, their flora and fauna, and to provide high-end luxury experiences for our guests.
This is what motivates and drives us to invest in efficient technologies and environmental management practices that successfully combine to preserve the environment.
IV. Environmental Planning
In order to guarantee the achievement of both the Sustainable Development Mission and the Environmental Criteria set out by Tres Ros, we established an Environmental Planning and Management Route that guides all our activities and efforts on Sustainable Development .
This planning and management methodology has allowed us to develop, implement and promote sustainable luxury tourism practices in all of the resorts components and development phases.
V. Preliminary Environmental Studies
Following the guidelines of the Environmental Planning and Management Route, several years were used to study the ecosystems in Tres Rios. During that stage of Environmental Characterization and Analysis, a team of scientists and experts was assembled to undergo research in topics as diverse as digital aerial photography, geographic analysis, mangrove and jungle ecosystems, wildlife, coral reefs, geo-hydrology, etcetera.
This stage was fundamental, as it provided the basic information required to orient the sustainable development of the Tres Ros Master Plan. Proof of the Tres Rios commitment to Sustainability is the fact that more money has been invested in environmental studies than in the engineering and architectural projects for the Hotel Hacienda .
VI. The Tres Ros Environmental Management System
Proper environmental management requires executing daily actions that are guided by the Tres Ros Environmental Management System (EMS). This system is comprised of 7 programs and 20 sub-programs that are constantly implemented by the Tres Rios Green Team (also known as the Environmental Supervision Team), and includes plant and wildlife management, environmental monitoring, waste management, environmental education and environmental contingency actions, as can be seen in the following illustration.
An example of the significant actions undertaken by the Green Team was the rescue of 2,700 plants from 11 environmentally endangered and protected species from the Hotel Hacienda Tres Ros building site. These plants were marked, retrieved and sent to the plant nursery before the construction team and machinery moved in to start building the hotel. An additional 1,300 plants have also been temporarily relocated to the nursery during construction, elevating the total number of rescued plants to 4,000.
Also worthy of notice is the constant work in providing environmental education and training to construction workers, as well as intense reforestation efforts that have involved the production and planting of more than 50,000 plants in over 24,000 square meters (6 acres) of mangrove forests previously impacted by hurricanes.
VII. Best Environmental Practices During Hotel Operation
The Tres Ros Environmental Management System has acted intensively during both the planning and the construction phases. With that same spirit, we have established a series of environmental guidelines that are being combined as a set of Best Environmental Practices (BEP) to be implemented during the operation of the Hotel Hacienda Tres Ros. As the following illustration shows, the BEP set includes multiple actions to assure energy efficiency, resource conservation, pollution prevention and the continuation of our environmental management system during hotel operation.
Part of the BEPs include the automatic control of lights and air-conditioning in rooms; architectural design to reduce the entry of sunlight in rooms; an efficient garden irrigation system that re-uses treated water; integral waste management that includes waste separation, reuse, recycling and composting; substitution of traditional chemical products for biodegradable products; incorporating best environmental practices in staff training programs, operation standards and quality control programs, etcetera.
For more information please refer to our environmental data in www.tres-rios.com
