Elite Overview
From the editors of Elite Meetings
Only a 15-minute drive from San Diego’s international airport and convention center, the Grande Colonial hotel in La Jolla, California, has been captivating groups with its Continental-chic ambience since 1913. Continually updated over nearly a century, and recently expanded to include the Little Hotel by the Sea and Garden Terraces, the AAA four-diamond property hosts meetings for up to 120 people in 5,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. Three of the meeting rooms view the ocean just a block from the beach.
A collection of one- and two-bedroom suites features full kitchens and fireplaces ideal for extended stays, business retreats, and executive hospitality. All 93 accommodations feature spacious closets, LCD TVs, complimentary Internet access, and sumptuous down bedding. The charm, convenience, and personalized service of a legendary boutique property may tempt guests to stay indoors, but it’s hard to stay in when the pool, sun, sand, surf, and all the attractions of La Jolla and greater San Diego wait nearby.
At day’s end, guests can count on a memorable dinner from room service, a catered dinner party, or the lively social scene at the hotel’s signature dining room, Nine-Ten Restaurant. A leading light in the local farm-to-table movement—and always on the cutting edge—the restaurant celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2011 and boasts an “extraordinary to perfection” rating from the Zagat guide.
Planner Reviews
From our planner community
The entire staff, from the sales manager to the serving and grounds staff, exuded a professional yet hospitable demeanor. I only ask that I have more opportunities to work with this group.

Grande Colonial Hotel Completes $500,000 Renovation
Posted February 1, 2012
New Lobby and Adjacent Meeting Space
The Four Diamond Grande Colonial hotel, located in the Village of La Jolla, has completed a $500,000 renovation of the hotel’s entry and foyer, lobby and surrounding public spaces and three adjacent meeting rooms. The project began in December of 2011 and was completed in January 2012. Interior design was provided by Warren Sheets Design, Inc., a San Francisco-based architectural and interior design firm noted locally for their work on The Grand Del Mar Resort.
As part of the extensive overhaul, the entire main lobby, elevator foyer and lower public restroom foyer were completely refurbished to include new Giallo Royale and Calcutta White polished marble and black Galaxy Granite flooring. New wall coverings, paint, lighting, furniture and artwork were also be added. The lobby’s existing fireplace and all of the original crown molding have been restored. Two of the hotel’s three meeting rooms located off the main lobby, received new flooring, wall coverings and meeting room chairs. One of the two meeting rooms, the Sun Room, which was the hotel’s original lobby in 1913, also received new entry doors, custom built-in cabinets, a buffet station, new window coverings and a more traditional refurbishment of the fireplace facade.
“We are excited to have had the opportunity to work with Warren Sheets and his design team,” said Terrence Underwood, general manager. “We went to great lengths to enhance the feel of the still intact turn-of-the-century Colonial Revival architecture designed by noted area architect Richard Requa back in 1913, while creating a classic environment augmented with contemporary nuances.”
The sophisticated new décor carefully preserves the hotel’s enduring historic appeal, while infusing modern elements such as bold colors of azure and Mediterranean blue, accompanied by warm golds. Artfully recapturing the hotel’s storied past with a keen focus on modern sensibilities, the new design infuses a classic European ambiance and a refined, contemporary sophistication.
Known as La Jolla’s oldest original hotel, the Grande Colonial has been a landmark in the community since 1913. A member of Historic Hotels of America, a sub-brand of the Preferred Hotel Group, the hotel offers 93 European-style guest rooms and suites (18 of which are extended-stay suites with full kitchens and fireplaces). Over 5,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor ocean-view meeting space is also available for up to 120 guests. Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the award-winning, ZAGAT-rated NINE-TEN Restaurant and dinner is served nightly. The Grande Colonial is located at 910 Prospect Street in La Jolla, California.
