THE FUTURE IS LOOKING BRIGHT (AND GREEN) FOR MEETINGS AT GRAND HYATT KAUAI RESORT & SPA
Posted March 10, 2011
New Environmental Initiatives Make This Resort a Great Place to Plan a Green Meeting and Save
The freshly renovated Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa has completed an environmental initiative moving them light years ahead. The resort has replaced nearly 7,000 fluorescent light bulbs with LED lights and expects to see a return on their $500,000 investment within one year. Though LED lights cost more the resort expects to see 70% increase in lighting efficiency with other benefits including cooler, mercury free operation, and increased durability and life cycle.

Adding to the long list of earth-friendly practices at the resort including solar panels and an organic garden, this project, recent guestroom renovations, and honors including Smart Meeting’s Platinum Choice Award and Corporate Meetings and Incentive’s Paragon Award, make it an ideal locale for a meeting. With the Meet and Be Green program planners are encouraged to make green choices for their meetings, qualifying for a 3% rebate by pledging to take these ten steps to reduce environmental impact:

• Recycle during the meeting
• Use products with 100% recycled content
• Print materials locally
• Minimize shipping
• Place meeting materials, such as handouts, notepads, pens, etc., in a central location so attendees can take as needed
• Maintain room temperatures at an appropriate level
• Eliminate disposable water bottles
• Minimize use of other disposable products such as plates, cups, napkins, and utensils
• Select locally grown seasonal foods when planning the menu
• Plan ahead to make it easier and more economical to keep the meeting green

Greening meetings is nothing new at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, as standard practice they:
• Use a centralized system to control air conditioning, reducing energy consumption
• Recycle all glass, plastic and aluminum cans
• Serve condiments and beverages in large containers, not individual packages
• Use silverware, china, glassware and cloth napkins
• Centralize water stations instead of using bottled water
• Offer local, in-season products when possible
• Include vegetarian and gluten-free options on all menus
• Collect food waste for local farmers to use as feed for livestock
• Utilize outdoor green spaces for events
• Provide recycle bins for paper and cardboard in the meeting planner office

For new meetings booked and held by March 31, 2012, groups participating in the Meet and Be Green program will be eligible for a 3% rebate on qualifying charges on the master bill. To discuss Meet and Be Green options, contact the Grand Hyatt Kauai sales team at 808.240.6435 or create an RFP now.

Anara Spa Wins Accolades From Conde Nast Traveler Spa Goers
Posted November 19, 2008
POIPU, KAUA`I, HI - May 13, 2008 - Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa was recently chosen by readers of Cond Nast Traveler as offering the best treatments in North America and the Caribbean. More than 4,000 Cond Nast Traveler readers rated over 1,000 spas they had visited in the past three years. Resort spas were rated on location, treatments, service, rooms, cuisine and facilities. These spa-savvy readers selected Anara Spa's lavish signature treatments for top honors. Drawing on the balance and wisdom of nature, Anara's treatments weave traditional Hawaiian healing customs with healing plant essences from the island.

The Kauai Clay Ritual features wild-crafted ingredients from the lush rainforests of Kauai to nourish and purify. Soles soften with a Hawaiian salt footbath. Next, a cleansing scrub of native awa and warm coconut oil is rubbed into the body with warm stones delivering a deep state of calm. A mineral-rich Kauai clay mask then delivers nutrients and removes impurities. After a rinse in a private outdoor lava rock shower, a luxurious massage with a rich cream made of rainforest botanicals captures nature's magical essence of Kauai.

The healing powers of noni as an antioxidant with skin toning and immune boosting powers have been revered for generations. Immerse in a luxurious Majestic Noni body treatment beginning with a soothing footbath followed by a body polish of macadamia and noni infused sea salts. Rinse in a lava rock shower before a sensory herbal wrap of Hawaiian botanicals envelops the body, relaxing muscles and preparing the skin for a nourishing mask of noni and aloe vera. Complete the journey with a massage of rich kukui nut oil leaving skin soft, supple and blissfully renewed.

A profound Traditional Healing treatment frees the mind, eases the body's tension, and lightens the spirit. Beginning with the ha, or breath, and a traditional saltwater cleanse, a rhythmic lomilomi massage with organic Hawaiian oils follows, inducing a deep state of relaxation. Hot stones wrapped in purifying ti leaves then deliver warmth, releasing tension. The finishing note is a volcanic pumice foot treatment and warm coconut oil scalp massage to bring about a state of deep bliss.

Tropical delights abound in the Organic Lilikoi Lemongrass treatment. This luxuriously hydrating escape is inspired by luscious lilikoi (passionfruit). Beginning with a coconut foot bath and a deluxe scalp massage with a deep conditioning avocado-coconut cream hair mask, the body is then polished to perfection with Kauai salts infused with organic lilikoi and lemongrass. After a rinse in a lava rock shower, a luscious massage of rich mango butter relaxes muscles while drenching the body in moisture.

With the completion of its long awaited garden spa expansion and overall spa renovation award-winning Anara Spa is the largest spa on Kauai and second largest in the state. Drawing on the soothing and healing properties of nature, Anara seeks to reconnect each guest with the restorative powers of nature.
The multi-million dollar expansion and renovation, completed in 2007, added five elegant open-air hale (thatched roof bungalows) appointed with teak and quartz, each hale features its own exclusive lava rock shower and mist grotto. Two hale are designed specifically for couples treatments. An open-air Vichy treatment room for soothing hydrotherapy was also added along with two lava rock botanical baths. Existing treatment rooms, each opening to their own private garden, were completely renovated adding native koa wood cabinetry. The well-appointed fitness center, open 24/7, was expanded to 900 square feet allowing for additional cardio and strength equipment.
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT WITH SOLAR POWER AT THE GRAND HYATT KAUAI RESORT & SPA
Posted November 19, 2008
POIPU, KAUAI, HI - October 1, 2008 - Celebrating completion of their new photovoltaic solar panel system, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa has taken a bold step to conserve resources and increase energy independence. Seeking a bright solar powered future, the resort partnered with SunPower Corporation, manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, panels and systems, to install the 18,500 square-foot, 280-kilowatt system over the employee parking lot, providing shaded parking as well as clean, renewable solar power for the resort.

Hosting contractors who worked on the project, county leaders and community members, the Grand Hyatt held a dedication for the structure last Friday with spokespeople from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, SunPower Corporation and the resort's owners, Kawailoa Development, addressing the attendees. Doug Sears, general manager of the Grand Hyatt Kauai exclaimed, "We are thrilled to be moving forward in our efforts to conserve resources. The resort has instituted many successful energy saving programs over the past 18 years reducing our electrical usage by over 1.5 million kWh annually, this solar project takes us to the next level of resource conservation and environmental responsibility." The output from the system will reduce CO2 emissions by over 230,000 tons, further lessening oil dependence by at least 7,000 barrels annually. KIUC's President and CEO, Randy Hee, commended the Grand Hyatt for their continued leadership in stewarding environmental conservation without sacrificing the island's rural nature and aesthetic beauty. Jun Fukada, general manager of Kawailoa Development, owners of the Grand Hyatt Kauai, stated, "The new solar system represents our commitment to the environment. We hope this project will help inspire other business leaders also."

The resort is strongly committed to shrinking its environmental footprint by reducing, reusing and recycling. Some of the steps the resort has taken include:
A recycling program which diverts over 13 tons per month from the island's landfill. With extensive back-of-house recycling for over 10 years, the resort also has recycling bins located in high traffic areas for guests around the property.
A heat-to-energy conversion system that uses heat produced by the air-conditioning to heat water for guestrooms, laundry, and pools, conserves 205,000 kWh/year.
Timers and variable speed drives on fans and water pumps reduce energy usage.
Integrated Pest Management is practiced in landscaping, choosing biological controls over chemicals whenever possible.
Reducing the use of harmful chemicals in dry cleaning, a Green Earth dry cleaning machine replaces petroleum-based solvents with gentle silicone, made from silica or sand.
Take-out food containers and utensils are made from corn-based plastic. Plastic cups in the pool and spa area have been replaced with acrylic cups to reduce waste.
The nearly standard hotel conservation programs are also in place including replacing all lights with CFL's or LED's which saves over 800,000 kWh/year, light timers and sensors are installed in many areas, air-conditioning is controlled by an energy management system, low-flow shower heads and toilets, and sink aerators reduce water consumption by 40-50%, and allowing guests to choose if they want their towels and linens laundered saves over 500,000 gallons of water each year.
The resort is working with other major hotels on Kauai to establish in-room recycling programs (currently at the Hyatt it is sorted after being removed from the guestroom). Rattan recycling bins should be in place, in-room, at most Kauai island resorts by 2009, a broad-ranging move unprecedented in most destinations.
Grand Hyatt Kauai's new solar system
Posted November 14, 2008
June 9, 2008 - THE GRAND HYATT KAUAI Resort & Spa is installing an 18,500 square-foot, 280-kilowatt photovoltaic system at the 602-room hotel that's expected to generate 438,000-kilowatt hours of power annually. The system will be powerful enough to reduce the hotel's carbon dioxide emissions by more than 237,000 tons. The amount of electricity generated by the system is equivalent to what's needed to power 300 homes. Solar manufacturer SunPower Corp. is designing and installing the system, which will be completed in July.
