Fashionable and fun, canary hotel brings full-service luxury to the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, California. Just like its popular siblings in Santa Monica, Shutters on the Beach and Casa del Mar, the hotel puts a premium on personalized service and attention to detail, while indulging business guests with stylish amenities and a host of activities, day or night.
Interiors by designer Michael Smith whisk guests away to the islands off the coast of Spain. Spanish tiles and Moroccan-themed antique textiles, plus lush plants, bubbling fountains, and a staff trained in the “we can at Canary” philosophy of service set a perfect stage for meetings. In the 97 guest rooms and suites, a neutral palette, accented by splashes of color, create veritable sanctuaries for relaxation.
The hotel’s 5,000 square feet of meeting space proves equally luxurious. Five flexible function rooms host parties of 10 to 200 guests and feature a full range of audiovisual equipment—plus distinctly local themes: The Channel Island Conference Room exhibits Macduff Everton’s stunning photography of area beaches and the Channel Islands. Another highlight: the rooftop terrace, aptly named The Perch. Here, groups can sip cocktails and take in 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands, and Santa Ynez Mountains.
Downstairs, Coast Restaurant & Bar takes its design cue from the oceanfront Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. Steps away, meeting participants take in the many attractions of Santa Barbara, including State Street’s sophisticated shops, restaurants, art galleries, and numerous cultural treasures found throughout the city.

Great for Rooftop Welcome receptions and Dinners. Food & Beverage Presentation was exceptional and food was very good. Hotel needs a fitness room and spa on location. Sales Team experience was non very satisfactory, meeting was in the middle of a staff change and communication about my meeting was very confusing and not up to the standard I was expecting.

The new Canary is fabulous! The renovation is just what they needed! The service is exceptional, they really go above and beyond. The new restaurant and bar provides a great atmosphere. The added touches to the decor throughout the hotel are beautiful and I definitely suggest using the rooftop for a reception... the views are unbeatable. Well done Canary.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. (January 22, 2008) – The Edward Thomas Collection (ETC) of Hotels, owners and operators of the new Canary Hotel in Downtown Santa Barbara, announces the opening of Coast Restaurant and Bar, a fun and fashionable addition to the Santa Barbara dining scene. The expansive restaurant located just off the lobby offers a new vision for dining in Santa Barbara, coupling a warm and relaxed interior that can be best described as earthy, organic modernism with an accessible menu that goes for simple preparations to highlight the quality of superior ingredients.
“We have designed a restaurant that we believe speaks directly to the way Santa Barbarans live and dine,” said General Manager Manfred Timmel. “The welcoming atmosphere offers a variety of different areas for dining, from a shopping lunch-break taken at the bar, to a lively dinner with friends enjoyed in one of our generously-sized booths.”
Coast Santa Barbara joins the ETC family as the second venue dubbed Coast, after the original but also new location in Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach. As in Santa Monica, the menu’s focus on local market fresh ingredients is evident from the first read. Chef Fermin Arias’ menu is rich with comfort fare updated with clean, uncomplicated preparations, and geared toward the way people prefer to dine.
A favorite like a Crab Louie Salad is updated with local lettuce and a zesty caper dressing, while the best tuna is simply grilled and served with heirloom tomatoes and Spring asparagus. Not to be missed are the Pulled BBQ Chicken Sandwich and the appetizer of Grilled Red Snapper Tacos. The Raw Bar will feature a market-fresh selection of seafood rotating with the seasons. And a perfect ending to a meal is the childhood favorite Butterscotch Pudding or a homemade Ice Cream Sundae with chocolate fudge and buttery caramel sauce.
With a comfortable lounge area and generous bar, Coast will likely become a preferred meeting venue for visiting guests as well as locals. The wine list also sticks close to home, focusing on the bevy of world-class wineries from the local area, with most of them from small, independent producers.
Coast Restaurant & Bar is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coast is located at 31 West Carrillo Street in Santa Barbara. The restaurant is open daily from 7:00 am –10:00 pm. The bar will remain open until 11:00 pm on weekdays and 12:00 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. To make a reservation, call 805-879-9100 or go to www.canarysantabarbara.com.
THE EDWARD THOMAS COLLECTION LAUNCHES CANARY HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN SANTA BARBARA

Santa Barbara, Calif. (January 14, 2008) – The Edward Thomas Collection of Hotels (ETC) announces the January 2008 hatching of Canary Hotel steps from State Street and the cultural hub of town. Canary Hotel joins its sister hotels in Santa Monica, Shutters on the Beach and Hotel Casa del Mar, as one of California’s chicest nests. Canary Hotel is fun, yet elegant, a private island in the heart of the shopping and cultural district in downtown Santa Barbara.
ETC has journeyed to the Canary Islands and returned with a slice of the Islands’ natural beauty and serenity intact. From the nature songs that fill the air around the arriving guests to the subtle Spanish art that graces the walls, you sense you are in a special space, familiar yet unfamiliar, the Spanish elements blending smoothly with the local architecture and culture, but lighter, more playful; irresistibly inviting and soothing.
Formerly the Hotel Andalucia, the site has undergone a complete makeover including all 97 rooms and suites, the lobby, and porte cochere, as well as the addition of Coast Restaurant & Bar, imported directly from Shutters on the Beach, where it is already a success just months after opening.
The lobby, guest rooms and suites have all benefited from the expert hand of famed interior designer Michael S. Smith, whose inspired blend of rarified antiques, rich colors and textures, and familiar materials mixed with a dash of the exotic convey a richly layered, personal style that can best be described as classic mix of town and country. Rich dark wood floors with seagrass matting, a statement walnut four-poster bed dressed in crisp Matelassé and ikat printed upholstery all speak of the quality one would choose for their own home. Downstairs in the lobby, things are spiced up a bit with inspiration taken from Morocco and the Spanish isles and perfectly suited to become Santa Barbara’s gathering spot.
Coast Restaurant and Bar will be the ideal addition to the Santa Barbara dining scene, with its street level location and menu of updated comfort fare centered around what is in season at the markets. Chef Fermin Arias has created a menu inspired by Coast Santa Monica, but he has adapted it for Santa Barbara, and as a perfect partner for the relaxed and lively atmosphere where guests will likely want to visit a few times a week.

The building’s iconic rooftop has also been redone and coined The Perch. It’s the ideal spot for weddings or for lounging by the pool with 360-degree views spanning from the mountains to the Pacific. Canary Hotel also has several great spots for social events and meetings, be it a charity gala, company off-site meeting or a wedding. A ballroom and spacious, well-equipped meeting rooms and The Perch allow for so many varied functions.
Service at Canary Hotel will be polished, but relaxed and friendly making it the perfect place to work, play and nest in Santa Barbara.
ETC hotels are well known for their sense of whimsy and quality amenities and Canary Hotel will be no exception. From the signature surfing tree frog bath toy, Club Canario dog program, to the Personal Spa brought to your room featuring a menu of aloe-based treatments, Canary will be a welcome respite in the center of Santa Barbara.
